Firefly (2002–2003)

Don't believe the hype
25 September 2015
I'm in a serious minority here, but I hated this show. I don't understand how it became such a cult phenomenon and here's why: First of all, it is a character-driven show, which is totally fine. The problem being: I hated the characters. I found all of them to be bland "copy-and-paste" archetypes that felt were rushedly ripped off from better pieces of sci-fi. You've got your bold captain, your ditsy tomboy, your mercenary type, well, you get the gist. Other issues I had with this show include a really lame (albeit painfully catchy) theme song; I know it's just nitpicking but it has a tendency to get into and stay in my head. I also didn't care for the vague threats the characters faced: there's the overarching corporate what-have-you that is just kinda there, and then there are the fearsome reavers which should be the coolest thing about this show, but of course nope, just kinda there. I could go on ad nauseum about the side characters (all bland) and the unengaging obstacles the characters face but I'll just summarize with this: Firefly is an uninspired, poorly-written show fraught with awful characters. It basically rips off the things that made Star Wars and Cowboy Bebop so great and does nothing new or interesting with those elements. If you're a sci-fi fan, there are infinitely better shows. The only thing I mourned when the final episode finished, was the time I spent watching. But hey, at least I gave it an honest try.

Garden State (2004)

Awful...just awful
25 July 2013
Garden State was without a doubt one of the most irritatingly stupid pieces of sh** I've ever had the misfortune of seeing 30 minutes of (I didn't make it further than that). Sad attempts at acting; lousy direction; laziest and most pompously clichéd and contrite writing that was neither cleverly-nuanced nor original or engaging; that movie literally failed on all accounts: truly eligible of the dreaded "Golden Turkey" award for atrocious filmmaking. And yet sadly, pathetic hipsters find it to be a triumph. For a culture that claims a pseudo hippie renaissance, they're pretty f****** stupid. Garden State deserves a negative star out of five starts; the celluloid upon which it was printed is not even worthy of wiping the a** of Rush Limbaugh!

Evil Dead (2013)

A Splatter House Fun Fest
6 April 2013
I'm not one for remakes of classic horror films. I despised the Dawn of the Dead reboot and the slew of other horrid abominations to cinema that have followed in the wake of awful remakes that seem to be the poison of Hollywood these days; however, this was a most pleasant surprise. I will give nothing away as I feel this is a horror film that must be seen. Does it capture the magic of the original? Maybe not as The Evil Dead is one of my all-time favorite films and nothing can quite compare to the grueling and disturbing masterpiece given us by Sam Raimi all those years ago. Does it bring anything new or exciting to the table? You bet it does! This was a film exceeded in its gore factor only by the unsettling atmosphere of the movie. It's obscene, depraved, dark, and filled with violent delight. I was expecting the worst and found myself enthralled and appalled and ultimately so glad that I bought tickets. If you enjoy horror flicks as much as I do then nothing should stop you from seeing Evil Dead. Despite the poor user reviews I've seen this was a true feat of horror filmmaking at its goriest glory.
