Doctor Mabuse (2013)
What's not to hate
Bad acting, no plot, stationary cameras with green screens. Don't waste your time. The great reviews must have been from people on drugs or paid by the film maker.
The Lost Symbol (2021)
Dan Brown - Must trash religion to entertain
The puzzles are fun and while a little slow at the start it picks up. But of course it is Dan Brown so in the last episode they wrap up with preposterous things like Jesus said we could all be gods and the only reason the Bible has stayed around is because there is a hidden power in a code that we need to find. Why else would it have hung around? Huge laughter as Landon shows he is searching for that code in an English translation of the Bible, you know that is not the original language it was written in. By the way, God doesn't hide the ball - just read the Bible to find out what it says and the real power of scripture to change your life.
Chelovek-amfibiya (1961)
Must see for Pedro the clothes horse
The movie is meh with a sci-fi theme of girl meets boy fish but is forced to marry evil Pedro. But Pedro is amazing to watch his wardrobe change throughout this film including a spectacular orange and black robe. Ignore the film and enjoy the fashion show.
Dr. T, Lone Star Vet (2019)
Pretty Interesting
Unlike another review, I have seen three episodes so far and I have seen no repeated use of material. A lot of exotics that you don't usually get to see on the usual vet shows. Story telling can be a little slow and I would give it a higher rating if they edited it to shorter episodes.
Lonesome Dove (1989)
Yak Yak Yak - This is a western?
I can't believe the rating this film has achieved on IMDb. Given the reviews I thought this will be great. After an hour of yak with absolutely nothing happening I stopped the DVD. I then tried again to finish this assuming it must get better but it is so slow I found myself balancing my checkbook, cleaning the living room and cutting my fingernails. This has to be the most boring westerns ever made.
The pigs are the best actors in the show. There is no chemistry between Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall - they seem to be talking past each other and Tommy Lee Jones accent is horrible.
I never write reviews but after seeing all the glowing praise I had to share that not everyone will find this to be on the order of The Godfather, Casablanca, Citizen Kane or the Shawshank Redemption (you gotta be kidding me).
Ran (1985)
Bad King Lear
This movie gets raves for being cinematic but I found the movie rather boring. The obvious King Lear plot leaves little to guess how this will turn out and the much vaunted battle scenes were rather clumsy. Compared to Kurosawa's early work in Seven Samurai with the wonderful characters or the stunning photography in one of my favorite films, Kagemusha, this film is just dull. It misses completely on the tragedy side since the characters are never really developed and much of the film looks like it was shot in a bowl of a volcano with dirt and dust everywhere. The comic relief of Kyoami, the jester/fool, is just whiny and annoying. When the great lord finally reaches the end of his wits his deep comments on life just seem silly. He is too stilted too play the "mad" role properly and all the long shots and very heavy make up leave little opportunity for facial expression. All in all not the first or even second Kurosawa film I would choose to watch.
