Bridgerton: Out of the Shadows (2024)
Glorious rom-com!
I was highly anticipating this season and I'm pleased to say it has exceeded all expectations! The focus is primarily on Pen and Colin's friends-to-lovers story, and is jammed packed with romantic comedy goodness!
I was a little worried that they wouldn't be able to translate as well as romantic leads but they've done such an incredible job. Although, all the leading couples have been enjoyable thus far, there is something so tantalising about seeing two characters that have been ships in the night for a few seasons now, finally come together.
With only four episodes, there has been so much growth with these characters, we get to see naunces and depth that have been much needed, particularly with Luke Newton's Colin, who we see at struggling with his self-identity and purpose as a potential writer.
I'm beyond excited to see how the 2nd part of the season will unfold! Bridgerton has done it again!
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)
A joyous return
I grew up watching the original cartoon and like so many others, fell in love with the story, characters, the world of Avatar the Last Airbender. So, with trepidation I started the Netflix adaption and was blown away with the visuals, chemistry of the cast and the soundtrack. There are differences but it expand upon the original. An adaption is never a carbon copy and this series has met the challenge of remaining true to its roots while adding flavour of its own.
It's a joyous experience to see this beloved show adapted with care, I'm hoping Netflix continues with the next two volumes in the future.
Great News (2017)
Great Fun, A Must-Watch For Comedy Fans
Being stuck inside during lockdown gave me the opportunity to make use of my Netflix subscription & I desperate for something light hearted to binge. Great News is simply hilarious. I've seen so many comedies that seem to never take off in terms of tone, writing, characters, etc but this show is excellent from the very start. The dialogue is witty, the characters are colourful & wonderfully cartoonish (with emotional depth sprinkled in) and even though the 'over-bearing Mother' character has been done to death, this felt like a breath of fresh air. I particularly love Adam Campbell's Greg, whose facial expressions & line delivery oddly remind me of Niles from the classic sitcom 'Frasier'. I can only hope that Netflix decides to renew it for another series in the future because it's too good to be forgotten!
Millie Inbetween (2014)
A charming series!
'Millie Inbetween' is an utterly delightful drama series that revolves around life of thirteen year old Millie McDonald and her older sister Lauren, who, after the recent separation of their parents, now have to deal with the looming prospect of being part of a blended family, when both parents subsequently get new partners (both with children!). This coming-of-age drama pushes the boundaries of children's television, depicting a very real illustration of modern family life and the struggles they can face. The story lines are often lighthearted affairs providing some good laughs and gentle life lessons for younger viewers but when the series subtly shows it's character's relatable emotional struggles- that's when it's truly shines. 8/10 Both children and adults alike will enjoy this engaging drama series!
Good Morning-Call: Guddo môningu kôru (2016)
A true gem of a show!
Based on the Japanese Manga of the same name,'Good Morning Call' revolves around the slow bubbling romance between protagonists, Nao and Uehara, who, through a series of hilarious predicaments, are forced to become flatmates. What is truly remarkable about this little drama series is it's ability to balance lighthearted, rather animated humour with poignant teenage angst. The two leading characters are simply great together and although they clash at times, their gentle love story is captivating in both it's charm and innocence. Each episode manages feel fresh and equally compelling as the last as new plot lines are constantly introduced, masterfully weaving in character growth too, as the series progresses. If you are looking for a cheerful romantic comedy with a boatload of heart, 'Good Morning Call' is surely a must!
