And Then We Danced (2019)
Brilliant personal journey
Such a beautiful film! For every centimetre of merab's personal journey, I was there. I felt every arch. It was such a touching story, beautifully told through a brilliant character. It was the perfect setting, really, Georgia is such a beautiful country yet tradition is sacred, and what better scenario than a gay Georgian dancer. So much Passion, personal journey and friendship
Matthias et Maxime (2019)
A film full of life
Every character is so well written and authentic. It really feels like a film you become a part of.
It's extremely well shot and directed, and tells a complex story of platonic and romantic love.
Gay cinema has really taken on a new level now and this film is a fine example of it.
Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
15 years too late
Dialogue was extremely on the nose, and jokes were very badly delivered. The acting was also over the top.
Not only was the screenwriting very poor, but the story itself was over sentimental and loaded with stereotypes.
The aloof nature of the characters created a disconnection and I felt I wasn't really rooting for any of them. I can only assume the book was more fleshed out in this regard.
This film feels fifteen years out of date, and more suited to the early noughties style of rom com. Would have been a great film for representation which is still to this day starved in the industry. However, this unfortunately was not the film to set the world on stage and pave way for more representative films - as much as I wish it was. Still, important to have been made, just felt very old hat and the world of rom coms has moved on since then.
Moffie (2019)
A lovely film with reflections on masculinity
Reading many of the reviews here, I can't help feel that many have misunderstood the point of the film.
This film is not an exploration into apartheid times, nor the war. It's also not thematic around homosexuality.
Instead, the film is a reflection on masculinity and herd mentality. Of three sensitive men, forced to join the army and having to come to terms with their new environment.
I've avoided spoilers in this review, deliberately. However I would say many reviewers here seem to like conclusive endings, or happy endings. This film will not give you that.
This film will take you on a journey of aggression, submission, romance and friendship.
A wonderful film.
Little Joe (2019)
Excellent direction and suspense thriller
I loved this film, the pace was very slow but in an incredibly tense and thrilling way. I'm honestly so shocked by the reviews on here because all the way through I was thinking - "wow what an incredible music score". In fact, I was going to share it with my musician friend who does film scoring. Really shocked by the comments here, loved the film.
The Happy Prince (2018)
Awful and offensive
Anyone who knows the true story of Oscar Wilde, and have read de profundis or biographies will be grossly offended by this ego-maniac's interpretation of the story. This is one of the most important stories in LGBT history and is so badly mistold in this film.
Shame.
