Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Like Groundhog Day with guns
So Tom Cruise has been back again with the latest sci-fi, Edge of Tomorrow. After his great performance in Oblivion, he made it again in this comedy-filled tasty Twinkie. Not to say this film is all comedy, and there was too much action to categorize it as nice drama movie. What I was going to say is, this movie has all the movie needs to be enjoyable.
Private Cage is brought down to warfare against aliens, without reading "Exoskeleton Suit for Dummies" first. But oh my, he had this curse that Phil had in Punxsutawney that he had to die and respawn, and over and over and (over) again that he granted from an alien he killed.
I don't know, but apparently, the screenwriter was inspired by "Groundhog Day", which is a good thing. The pace really done well by describing Cage deals with time-loop. There are many possibilities of a man's mind could think to take advantage of a powerful curse, and I think they explore this well, just like Groundhog Day.
Good thing comes from the characters. They are lovable and some of them have great quotes. Emily Blunt really nailed the character of a hard-soldier that shared same fate with Cage in the past. She really balanced Tom Cruise's performance.
But enough exaggerating, shall I? There are minus-es too. Always. The first one is the lack of pre-invasion imaging of Earth(I am not really sure for this one, because I missed first five minutes of the movie). Damn, they should have made the detail about the mimic's purpose and maybe, a little twist in the credits that could open a gate for sequels (duh!). The second, well, I think there is no second minus.
Even it is not perfect, I believe they have exceeded the edge of making a sci-fi well-balanced, either from the storyline and action. Really worth to watch in cinema. And btw, forget Godzilla, the storyline sucks.(no h8 kaiju fans)
Monsters University (2013)
Keep surprising people, Mike.
So, a prequel that made it perfectly! Mike Wazowski, a monster that has a dream to be a scarer. A scarer is pretty much like a job that everyone would die for. He studied so hard, until he made it to Monsters University, the best university that printed many top scarers in the world.
At first, I didn't though Mike had that faith for being a scarer that much. It is like a cow that want to jump to the moon, pretty much alike. He is so obsessed and optimistic at the same time. It is fun to see how Mike and Sulley having a friendship, especially with the lame club in the college, Oozma Kappa. Don't forget the lake scene. It was beautiful.
The movie is so enjoyable. There wasn't a time where I bored. It was cool, all of that college events and stuff(Even I don't understand why the ministry give a permission to an event that wild :D) The character is filled completely great. From the popular guys until a mommy's kid.
For the most heart-kicking scene, it is located in the almost end of story. With Mike and Sully kicked out from college for being "brutal", they still keep their dreams, their deepest dreams, to be a scarer. Starting from a mail-room guy, they became the most scarers and the revolutionist for Monsters, Inc. Great story guys!! Okay, it is not good if I don't tell the bads, too. There is this moment where you get a lack of info about Sullivan family. Okay, tell me I didn't catch the info from the movie but why is Sullivan family so famous? I didn't find any of these scarer(that will work in Monsters, Inc.) are from MU. I know there is Squishy and his buds, but why didn't take the character from the first movie to be cameos? Showing it in a collectible cards credits doesn't mean the same, dude. Anyway, it is still a great movie.
About Randall, I feel pretty sorry for him. All he wanted to do was show to them who is the man, and ended up like that(I mean, you never know what will Randall go through in human world, right)
Elysium (2013)
Max has fulfilled his destiny, but is it "Elysium"'s destiny to be a better movie than District 9?
Okay, first of all I am so excited about this movie, especially it is directed by Neill Blomkamp, the creator of the awesome "District 9", and I thought this gonna be "awesome", too.
Set in 2154, where Earth is drew over-populated, messy and such things. All the problems that you can imagine is now a reality in this planet. The only reason to go to space is for the Earth life as we used to know. Unfortunately, as the greed of human never stops, they keep the facility, this Elysium, only for the rich-folks.
Max De Costa, an ex-criminal who decided to work on Armadyne, a robot servants factory, got an accident on workplace, leaving a radiation that will kill him in five days if he doesn't go to Elysium, where the medical pod and such things could be happened.
So I will start with the plus. There are so many sci-fi(future imagination especially) that failed. Let's just say Pandorum, G.I. Joe(I don't know if this sets in future, but well), they are barely give us the real deal of future. But in Elysium, it's too ignorant to not believe what Earth would be. Over-populated, advanced tech(even I am not so sure with that medical-pod), even the genius AI. Hell, they are seem so real in a distant future.
Another aspect is Sharlto Copley. Yes, you maybe recognize his face from "District 9" as Wikus Van De Merwe. You see, the accent he uses in two different films are flawless. And the characters between a mutated human become a #1 mercenary, he just cannot fail. I love his act and impression, really.
Beside that, there was nothing special, more than my expectation from D9. The plot is flat, there is no co-op relationship that really matters(Between Wikus and Christopher Johnson, it is so intense), and easily forgettable. One more thing, the action. I have watched the trailer for this movie, and it seems promising a great fight between exoskeleton-guy with a robot, a genius AI robot. But as far as I can see, I only saw a man that ripping of a robot's head. That's all. No more robots. Ever. The camera is unconformably followed. I mean, why could they just put it on a certain spots, and let the editing do the work? I was really surprised when the Director of Photography is exactly the same as D9. D9 is better at fight scene.
The verdict is, this movie may be forgettable, but the act from Sharlto Copley leave my disappointment that this movie would/should have been better than District 9. A great dystopia future and actors, but really missed the chance because the freaking camera shoot and standard plot. But still, I am looking forward to D9 sequel. Hope it will get more awesomeness from the franchise.
P.S.: Sorry if this review is too comparative with District 9. Since I like District 9, the director and writer is same and I expect something more, so. . .
Pacific Rim (2013)
I am totally waiting for the sequel!
Many people made the long review, so I will just give you the summary of what I saw:
1. The opening battle(When you saw Raleigh with his brother fought Knifehead) seems so bold. I just awe and scream excited while watching it. The second battle scene I like is the last fight when Gypsy slash that motha***** into two pieces, ofc.
2. Newton and Hermann is funny overall. The quote I love from Hermann is: "The numbers is the thing that close from this world truth." or something like that.
3. The BGM! Yes. The BGM. I've never heard a great mood-building BGM as Pacific Rim does. It sounds so hopeful and strong.
But, I have some of the, if I could say, disappointment, from this movie:
1. No details info about the Kaiju. They only explained the codename, from the people's mouth. I really hope I saw the details like when I playing House of The Dead or watching Kids Next Door.
2. We need more Jaeger.
3. We need more Jaeger that stood still. Seriously? Only four Jaegers and all of them is crushed? I mean, look at Cherno Alpha. Never miss a beat for six years, and lose a fight for many minutes?
4. Yes, the acting is mediocre, but not that bad. I must admit it. Even the little Mako acted better than the main character.
All of them, I cannot wait for the sequel, whether it is bad or better. This movie is not summed up with only a nuclear blast, i know it. It could not.
9/10
Broken City (2013)
It just peels itself and throw it away
It's a story about "bad cop, good cop" (or should I say "bad pupil, good pupil"). Started by the act Billy Taggart(Marky Mark) and someone who raped-till-death Yesenia Barea, head-shot by the police bare hands(JK, pistol). Fortunately, it was considered as self-defense by the court.
7 years has passed, Billy starting to forget what happened, not until the New York City currently Mayor, Nicholas Hostetler(Russell Crowe) called him for another private detective job that he could avoid, and this movie will just end well.
As far as I can say, this film has no special point at all. Yeah, we all know Marky Mark hardly miss the police role, neither do Crowe and Caroline Zeta-Jones. But the story, it has no special point at all. All you want to do is just waiting this story to peel its truth one-by-one.
From the Mayor's wife, to Mayor's rival campaign manager, to Mayor himself and back to dearly Billy Taggart. It's just like watching CSI, minus murder focus, yet a mystery. And the sub-plot, they are never find their their solution, I kinda hate that.
And if you expect the car battle will help, no, that makes it worse. Such a nonsense that a car with 40 mph speed that leaves nothing but a bruise for its driver. Come to think of it, crime movie uses logic all the time.
tl;dr This movie is not worth it for cinema. Wait it to come in front of your couch will be good. Or else, you'll find it very plain, no twist, an exciting debate(but hey, once again, it's crime movie, not a debate movie we want to watch here), good acting, funny drunk act, little fist-fighting, and the ending, the ending soundtrack is pretty good. I wonder where I can find it...
