The Secret: Dare to Dream (2020)
Dare to dream about killing your partner and marrying his wife!
The premise is that positive thoughts attract positive energy and outcomes, and negative does the same; consciously or subconsciously. This means that the central character is a master manipulator who must've secretly wished the woman's husband dead, which caused the plane crash that killed him. Then he must've meant to meet her and cause her house to be damaged in the storm so he could worm his way into her life, causing her to dump the boyfriend, and ultimately manipulating her and her family to move in with him. And, of course, because this is all just "positive thoughts", there is no sense any personal responsibility or effort into making things happen. Furthermore, there is this fantasy that the American dream of wealth and prosperity just happens by wishing; and in fact, the only measure of success in this movie is money. Interesting, seeing as the movie itself made a loss! The whole thing would be laughable if its message wasn't so dangerous. You might as well believe in "the force". This type of pseudo psychology is cultish, and like any other cult, needs to be avoided.
The Darkest Minds (2018)
What is this garbled copycat movie?
Is this The Hunger Games? Is it The Purge? Is it the X-Men, or Wolverine (walk until you can't walk any further)? Or perhaps the birth of the Jedi's and their mind trick? Hold on, what happens if they can't have kids, will the human race die out? What happens when these kids become adults, do they die out? What if these kids have kids, will the older humans die out? What if they can't have kids because they go crazy when they touch, will they die out? What if their kids are normal or super-superhuman, will they kill everyone and die out? Perhaps the best we can hope for is this movie franchise does just that; die out.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
1 dimensional boredom
This films is like watching someone else play a video game, and that someone has put in the immortality cheat. After 15-20 minutes, it's dull, repetitive and then ultimately stupid and lacking in any humanity.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Historical inaccuracies spoilt an ok movie
I like the music of Queen. I was hoping to see a biopic and learn something about them; especially seeing that Taylor and May are behind this. Unfortunately, like in art, truth has been sacrificed for image. What we have is the sanitised version I guess they would have us believe. Problem is, we were there. It did not happen they way they were telling us. This film, then, screws with your mind, and leaves you wondering if what you know is true actually was how you remember things. (And thanks to proper research, history vastly outweighs this version of truth.) But what is truth? Queen are awesome. Mercury is a legend. The music will live on. Perhaps for musical entertainment and experience, they should have made "We Will Rock You", and stuck in a rockumentary as an extra on the Blu-Ray. I guess "management" are happy with the truth they are trying to sell us; but as an audience member who lived through those times, it's leaves you slightly dazed, slightly confused, and slightly unsatisfied. Get acting, costumes and production values though; cast and crew certainly gave 100%.
Ackley Bridge (2017)
So unreal it's laughable
It's a bad mix between a Carry-On and Monty Python, just without the jokes. Anyone in the know understands this has as much to do with real education as a chicken has to do with a calculator. As for the stereotypical characters, Benny Hill could have written more realistic people and storylines. Finally, the back alleyways of the houses, I thought they'd burst into "Every Sperm is Sacred"! Watch for a laugh, but only if you can't find a spoon to remove your own eyeballs; which would be preferable. Absolute trash TV.
Django Unchained (2012)
Racism is not entertainment
3 hours of racism, hidden in "clever" dialogue, is still racism. This film is nasty, not entertaining. It has nothing positive to say. It thrives off stereotypes, and we're supposed to cheer just because it all turns out ok in the end? Shame. Let's move on from this. Let's leave racism in he past, where it belongs. Let's find new stories, ones that promotes respect, rather than cashes in on hate.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Excellent exciting and exactly what we wanted
Here's the thing; this Solo is 10 years younger than the one we met in New Hope. That's the point. Whom of us we slicker, smarter, and more self assured 10 years ago than we are today? Or, thinking of Force Awakens, 50 years ago? No, it's not the Solo we know, it's the one we would have met if we'd had had a film before he shoots Greedo first. So, stop wanting a movie that isn't, and immerse yourself in the one that is. If you do, you get a great Rob Howard flick of someone running from a teen/young adult he was, to starting to emerge to the man we will eventually know. And, with all the hidden and not so hidden Easter Eggs and cross references, what we end up is a great story of a character who we already know, and can cheer for, even when he does shot first. I can't wait for the next Solo instalment.
Quantum of Solace (2008)
Fantastic, Thrilling and Captivating
Firstly, opening sequence picking right from where Casino Royale ended. Incredible car chase. Stunningly filmed. Puts a massive smile on your face. And a set grimace on Bond's, which is carried through the movie. Put into perspective, Casino Royale started the franchise over. Fresh start with a fresh faced Bond, new to the 00 business. This one puts him right where he should be; rose coloured lenses smashed, and trying to sort his head out in this world of agents, double agents, being used, and using people. Takes a hard soul to survive, and Daniel Craig is excellent, taking us on a journey where we see Bond trying to get comfortable in his skin. If us as an audience are left uncomfortable, good. This is how we are supposed to feel, empathising with a character who inhabits a nightmarish world, but must come out as the hero. Which he does, closing the circle of guilt left through Vesper's death, and leaving the path clear for Skyfall. This movie is like Empire in Star Wars, a dark mid chapter which is needed in order to develop characters and lead to a resolution only to be delivered by the next movie. Seen on its own, it can feel out of place; but as part of the 007 cannon, a great foundation from which all further stories will grow and develop. Enjoy it.
Top Gear: Episode #25.6 (2018)
This is great!
The 3 guys have hit the pitch perfectly. Solid car reviews, solid banter, solid driving skills, and solid presentation. Great section on the Alpine, fantastic guest, and awesome SUV tests at Downton Abbey. Can't wait till the next season. Thank you Matt, Chris and Rory.
Inside Out (2015)
Nasty movie, not for kids...or anyone with a sense of happiness
Do not take kids - or anyone to see this. What you will witness is the emotional breakdown of a teenager. How is that the subject of a kids movie?
There is no fun. There is nothing positive. There is nothing to celebrate about this movie. Do not waste your time or money.
Revisit Monster's Inc, and have fun together at a movie.
Listen, if a teacher gave your 5 or 6 year old a lesson on how to be a moody, unengaged, depressed teenager, then you'd be after their neck. But, stick a Disney sign on it, and it's entertainment? Are you kidding me?
This is sick stuff people, dreamed up by sick people!
STAY AWAY FROM IT!!!
