Only the Brave (2006)
A rare insight into the war from the perspective of Japanese Americans
I saw this screened yesterday at the Bite The Mango Film Festival in Bradford, UK.
Very moving film! Its rare to see a 'war film' that centers itself on Budhism. Not in its entirety but central to its story.
It not only shows how futile war is but also the way those of Japanese ethnicity in America during the war were treated. All locked up together in internment camps for doing nothing wrong, apart from being Japanese American. Just for being of a certain country's origin - Then made to fight for their country.
With pretty much an all Asian cast its a well crafted work which looks great with a superb sound design and a visual treat.
Try and get to see it if you can.
The Girl in the Café (2005)
Great cool movie with important message
I really enjoyed this movie. A very cool and educated cast of actors who really put the bleakness of the subject across in a way that could be understood by the most stupidest of world leaders.
Some may say that drama and politics don't mix - well this was the perfect way of getting the message across.
Bill Nighy and Kelly MacDonald were well suited in the lead roles and played off each others characters. Nighy did seem like Hugh Grant a few years on. Curtis' writing does have a strong style. But even so Nighy was superb.
Enjoyed the role of Sunita, part of British delegation played by Indian Actress Meneka Das - too small-a-part but I hope this gets her seen a bit!!! Check out her pages on IMDb.
