Five (1951)
What a find!
On The Beach I thought was the first movie to address nuclear holocaust. No, this movie was made 8 years before. And only 6 years after the first nuclear explosion. Low budget, yes. Showing the cities of the world with only a smoky layer to depict the destruction - who needs the mass destruction depiction costing millions of dollars?? Using the Frank Lloyd Wright home of the director as the centerpiece location - brilliant! You have to remember that this movie is over 50 years old while you watch - don't laugh at the ways these people survived the explosions, knowledge of atomic disasters and survival then was all hearsay: we hid under our desks in school during air raid drills in the 50's and 60s's. I can only hope that watching this movie will make one person less likely to vote for a trigger-happy president!
Snowboard Academy (1997)
Ouch!
Even my kids thought it was trash. This movie stinks. I rented it from Blockbuster as it was the only snowboarder movie (fiction) I could find. But my snowboarding son is watching and I can tell he is not impressed. The acting is bad (I mean Jim Varney is the Draw?) and the storyline weak. Stay away from this movie unless you like to smirk and groan and sleep. You could maybe get the snowboarding extreme sports videos otherwise. Don't waster your time with this movie. Stay Away! Stay Away! I need to have 10 lines of text. ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ. Is that enough? No - I need to add more. Blah! Blah? Blah. Blah!! Blah?? Blah....
The Village (2004)
A self-described novice's view
OK, I'll admit I see a film during its 1st release once a year. I researched what was at the local Regal and decided this or Napoleon Dynamite. My wife decided which of those. I went expecting a completely predictable thriller, and have no prior experience with watching a full-length Shyamalan film. I was impressed. With the acting and the cinematography and the plot. I thought Ron Howard's daughter did a heroic rendition of a blind lead - yes, it's not easy to act sightless when you are not. The fantastic filming itself was very close-up and personal amidst the village scenery. And twice I was surprised by the plot twist - I'm usually pretty good at guessing what's next. I'll start checking out the previous Shyamalan films and look forward to the next - as well as keep a keen eye on Ms Howard's releases. Not to mention Mr Phoenix whose understated character was sublimely great (Check out the fireman film coming this fall). And disregard most of the negativity below this review -- it reeks of wanna-be a movie critic.
