Specimen (1996)
Mark-Paul's acting was just fine
Oh, overall, this movie is very cheesy, and I wish the aliens had been something other than walking blocks of muscle, but the story was a good idea in its inception. I thought Mark-Paul's acting was just fine, actually. He took the role seriously, regardless of the movie's lower budget, which denotes him as a good actor. Granted, it's been a while since I've seen it, so I can't give a good take on the supporting actors, but aside from the villain's one-note plot motivation, I don't remember groaning too badly. :) The handling of some of our main character's heritage problems (the whole problem with starting fires while asleep) was a particularly nice touch. Considering the budget, I thought they did the best they could--I'd like to see it redone.
Batman Begins (2005)
Utterly fantastic!
You would really have to go out of your way to dislike this movie. It's settings are darker and stylistically superb. The acting and characterization were phenomenal and told the story well. Especial standouts were Christian Bale and Cillian Murphy (though Liam Neeson is always a treat), but I thought it was wonderful that the movie captured the essence of Bruce Wayne's excellent support network. No one, not even Batman, can do it completely alone, and everyone needs motivation and emotional support. Katie Holmes's character, though not badly acted, just wasn't fleshed out enough for my taste--she was also aggravating in that nothing really seemed to please her. Finally, this movie is definitely an owner. I found it inspiring and entertaining.
King Arthur (2004)
An excellent, localized film!
It was refreshing to watch a more localized telling of part of the legend. I truly enjoyed the take on the characters, the acting, the scenery and the handling of the religions involved. There wasn't much personality to the Saxons, but it did not interfere with the movie. I especially enjoyed the ice incident. It was nice to see a Guinevere able to do more than sit back, look pretty and cause romantic chaos. Arthur especially was superb, but you really got to know the other knights. Relating to how grand, sweeping legends could be based on more localized occurrences, this movie reminded me of the 13th Warrior. Excellent, and most definitely an owner!
