Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Entertaining but extremely mediocre
Whole movie tries too hard to be cool and fails constantly.
One example is the main character. They made it a good looking badass woman because it looks cool. But then failed spectacularly at writing her as an actual main character. *Embarrassing*
Let's not even talk about the token asian, the native-like and the black characters...
They should have stuck to doing what they know to do. It would look less of an incoherent mess. I know it would have looked more like any other movie... But certainly it would have been better than this failed attempt at being cool?
Action scenes entertaining but you know how they will go in advance. The only one you won't guess is the one they pulled a deus ex machina to save the day. So yes... You couldn't guess it... Because it was nonsense.
Slow motion... So you can better see how utterly unremarkable is most of what they are slowing down.
Leave your brain sleeping and watch for fun. Don't think to deeply about it. The more you think about it the more you notice how utterly bad it is.
Beautiful Disaster (2023)
Actually hilarious.
I was expecting another toxic "good girl falls for bad boy" romance like I've seen millions (what? I enjoy mt guilty pleasures...). I was in the mood for red flags galore and teenage/barelly 20 stupidity with a side-dish of misoginy.
But instead I found this crack movie and I'm really happy about this unexpected turn of events. Was it what I expected? Not at all... But I had a great time watching and laughed quite a bit.
Is it a masterpiece? Naaah, nor does it try to be. The movie doesn't takes iteself seriously, it's not pretending to be anything but what it actually is: a cliché plot twisted to be a comedy.
180 Degree Longitude Passes Through Us (2022)
Amazing
This is truly an amazing series.
It looks gorgeous but the looks also have a purpose the lines (grades/latitudes in
Geography are, after all, lines separating and uniting humans, it's in the title, it's mentioned through the script and it's also all over the photography), the colors, the house interior, where the house is... Fantastic.
And then there is the script itself...
The series can be read on multiple levels, you can just follow the personal dramas as they are told, you can focus on the diversity aspect or you can do a whole lecture on generations. All of them, for me, are valid interpretations. But the most just towards the script is probably to take in all its layers.
Wang, the main character, is probably the most "fantastic" character of the 3, he's quite realistic, but he also represents unlimited possibilities of a maybe better future so he's also the most idealistic of the 3. While Mol and In are hardcore reality.
I can't say much about Inthawut, because I didn't get to meet one IRL. But I did grew up as the child of a Mol, and I can say she's extremely well written and absolutely consistent. It was entertaining (but also true to reality) to see how other viewers perception of her changed through the episodes. From initially seeing her as a cool Mom until the last seconds where they got one last realisation of how truly nightmarish she is in that last scene.
All in all... If you come across this series... This is, IMHO, a must watch. But... It's probably not for everyone. If you are not sucked in by the 2nd episode, if you feel uninterested and bored... Then just drop it, it's probably just not the type of story you'll enjoy and there is no point in torturing yourself. But if you fall in love with it... keep going, it won't disappoint. But maybe don't binge it, leave space between episodes to digest them.
Voyagers (2021)
Meeeh...
I don't hate it. I sat through it easily (it's more than I can say about many others).
But all in all this movie pretends to hinge on the character's feelings... But the characters weren't developed enought to sell it. They use the blue and "what if this is how we really are?" to make up for the fact they did not put in it enought effort/knowledge to explain it in a believable way.
To me, it's not that it couldn't happen, it's that they didn't know how explain/show it.
After Blue (Paradis sale) (2021)
... no. Just. No.
So I watched 20mins wanted to leave after 3..... I wanted to give it at least 30 mins, but it became clear it wouldn't get any better before then.
From what I saw, this is a movie done by someone who just wanted to film a soft erotic fantasy with all women.
Don't run to watch it thinking it'll be sexy... It seriously isn't.
Character's personality and acting were not needed for the director's objective. No idea about plot. I yeeted myself when I noticed that not even the acting would be salvageable.
It's intended to honour 80ies movies. But it's 2021 now and I like to think we've made some progress since then. If I want to see an 80ies movie. I'll watch one made in the 80ies, and enjoy it for what it is.
This? It's a hard pass for me.
A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish (2019)
Not suitable for autotune allergics
So yeah... Teenagers, modern day cinderella, christmas and singing. You know what you'll get... you do not expect a masterpiece, it's nit why you would watch this.
But you don't necessarily expect the singers to not sing. There are thousands of perfectly good looking singers out there (hello? talent shows?) And even more decent singers that with light autotune would pass... But somehow they decided autotune to the fullest was the way to go. It makes your teeth grind. And, for me, that was just too much.
Quanzhi Gaoshou (2019)
Hooked!
I got completly addicted to it over summer. Now I'm watching it again (more slowly) on netflix.
Netflix subs are better than those from WeTV. Not radically different (maybe they reviewed the originals?) But better.
I've recomended this tv series to anyone I thought could like it. Now that is in a well known platform even more.
Enter the Anime (2019)
Uuurghhhjjjj! NOOOO Nope nOooooPeeee NO NO NONONO
So... When I was a teenager suddenly someone noticed manga was a thing... They did this sort of crap pseudodocumentaries and news articles... Like trying to show how edgy that thing they knew nothing about was. And how edgy they were for talking about it (also they were trying to sell to you the crap they had licenced).
You know when your dad/mom tries to show s/he's modern and up to date with what the kids yo! Are doing this days? Same feeling...
It was, of course, a truckload of crap even back then. And anyone that had been around anime and manga longer than a month knew it. When we saw those it felt like a mix of second-hand embarrassement and personal insult. (Yeah... Exactly like when your father tries to show he knows and likes the same stuff as you and even tries to talk "modern").
Now it's 30 years later... And someone did it again!!!!!!! Like... SERIOUSLY!? It's been over 30 years since anime and manga was "that new crazy thing"!!
If this is what Netflix promotes and understands about Anime.... We're ***ked...
Others already said it. But just to be clear: do NOT whatch this! And if you do, please don't do it on Netflix... You REALLY don't want to give it any audience....I already feel bad for the 5 mins I watched and the next 15mins I fast forwarded before I checked reviews... Hope it doesn't counts as watched...
Dirty Dancing (2017)
No cookie
It's not THAT bad. It's real big (huge) mistake is that the actress can't dance to save her life. She exhudes that akwards embarrassed vibe that everyone who can't dance feels and transmits when they suddenly have to dance in public.
That worked great at the begining of the movie. But it it never changes and it's ridiculous at the end.
And then, there is the extra ending. It's obvious they wouldn't end together. In the original and in this one. Who ends up with their 1st love? Their summer love? No one. And for a good reason. It's a comming of age story. But... Seriously? He goes on to success and she doesn't even rates mentioning a career? In the end she can only be a mother and a wife? Freaking new wave of male chauvinists.... Were we watching the same movies?
Red Riding Hood (2011)
Looks good and leaves you with happy feeling
But ultimately it fails. It tries to be too many things and ends up being ridiculous. It tries to be medieval and modern, terror and teenage love story... In the end it's just dissonant. Could be OK for a lazy afternoon... but it's slower than it should. So it's at times boring.
Not at all the worse I've seen. But it's... Meeeehhhhh....
Step Up Revolution (2012)
Dance good plot and dialogues bad
I enjoyed the choreographies and dancers.
But the so called plot and dialogues were very bad. To me, Infantile is the best way to describe it.
I you like the step up movies, watch it. You won't be traumatized and you will enjoy the dancing. I did.
Otherways... Hard pass.
Bird Box (2018)
It's not BAD. But it's not good. WAY too long.
Cutting it down to a 45min episode or to a 75mins movie would help it a lot.
We all know the plot: people surviving on apocalyptic world. Among the survivors you've got some good and more bad. You follow the good.
Not much happens so there is no way to justify 2 hours of it.
Extinction (2018)
Super lazy writing with the kids.
Good movie but looses points all over the place because of the ridiculous kids and the train scene.
People realy believe kids still behave the same as middle class kids when there is a spider in the batthroom in the middle of the violent destruction of their life? Have you no common sense?
The only reason this is there is because the writers wanted an easy trope that required no thinking on anyone's part.
High Moon (2014)
It's a Pilot for TV series remade into a movie
So... I have no idea why it's not anywhere in IMDb but apparently Hgh Moon intention was to be a TV series. And that actually explains quite a bit about this "TV movie".
I'm happy they used the footage for something. But the end result is not the best. Too much squeezed in and at the same time not enough. And then it ends... without a real ending. You get an answer about what's going on with the moon, but little else. Personally I wouldn't have minded seeing more.
The Path (2016)
I've given up half way through season 2, very lazy writing.
Season 1 was OK with some brilliant moments in between. Until the end of season when there were some illogical behaviours (aka assigning an event to a character not bothering to make it believable)... But all in all it was OK.
Season 2 went downhill very very fast. It's become obvious that they have no idea what they are doing and how to develop characters. They are just throwing stuff at us that make no sense half the time. This in turn undoes the characters believability. The series are supposed to be a drama and all about why people does this and that... But what I see is people just doing random stuff... It's very lazy script writing and not even the actors can help it any more. They gave it a good try but there is just so much they can do with what they are given.
Where I left it was also very obvious they want to keep things mysterious and undefined in order to make the show last longer. It's also obvious that when they have no plot they just create some situation/conflict without giving it much thought to (try) distract and entertain (poorly) the viewer.
I fear they will drag on until canceled and everyone who stuck with it in hopes to reach a conclusion will be disappointed. And that's why I just gave up. I have no wish to see the characters devolve more and more into the ridiculous, knowing I'll probably never get any satisfying ending. IF this ends not being canceled and feedback about its ending is positive I MIGHT come back to it. But I think it won't happen and only positive reviews will be motivated more by people being a fan of one of the 3 leads than because the story itself was worth anything.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
2/3 awful and 1/3 OK, not worth it.
So... I finally watched it, and for the 1st 2h I did not understand how anyone could say this was worth a 6 or a 7... I did saw about the fake reviews. But it still didn't explain why it was still at a 6.9 after so many months... Then the last hour of the movie started and it made sense.
So... First two thirds, it's a mess. They got 500 ideas, bits and pieces and decided that rather than being selective or work hard to make it coherent... They would simply throw the whole mess in our face without any order or sense. Then once that's done you get the last 3rd of the movie, which is your more standard and linear plot. They fight, they make peace, they realize who's really the bad guy and fight against him/it. Enjoyable in a non-descript way. Still not a great plot and with the intelligence and psychology of a rock... But... it's an action movie and this last part delivers action, battle and other popcorn pass-time, which is what I wanted.
So it ends on a good (better?) note and it's easy to forget/pardon how truly bad the first 2/3 were... And that's probably why it still is at a decent average. BUT considering how many action movies there are out there... I would NOT recommend anyone to bother with it. Go watch something else, this one IMHO is not worth it.
Chappie (2015)
what a trainwreck
There is nothing I can say in it's favour... It's not badly made, it's not cheap... it's not bad at all... And yet it is. It looks and feels like a family movie for most of it, except that it makes you feel awful all the time because everything is going wrong. At least give me half a movie of happy times so I feel good for a while before you crush my heart or something. And then suddenly violence explodes across the screen... So I guess it's not a family movie? Which means it's even worse than I thought because if it's not that then what was it trying to be? Not enough Sci-fy or action or violence or feel-good to be anything... And simply not good enough to simply "be". Haven been so puzzled about a movie in a long time. I can't say in all fairness that it's bad... but at the same time I think it's a mess.
