Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
The glass ceiling cracked, but...
It didn't shatter.
First off, some of the best acting I've ever seen. Truly, it seemed so realistic for how bizarre and out of this world it was. All the characters, all the changes - it was seamless.
This was a WILD ride as a whole. I've never really seen anything like this. The concept is amazing.
However, the ending - as I alluded to above - just didn't break that ceiling. I can't really pinpoint why I feel that - it just felt like an epic movie that deserved an equally as epic ending. The ending was good - just.... Not what I expected. I never really felt the "evil" was really "evil" - just, there.
All in all, it is absolutely worth the experience.
Father of the Bride (2022)
watched in full because I paid $, mostly worth it!
Considered changing the movie because of the initial yawn fest. However, we bought it to watch and decided to suffer through. After that moment, it got to be mostly worth it!
Cute ending, fun dynamics, the usual cheesy romance stuff. A few unique moments but... eh.
Things I don't understand - with such a big leading cast, I was surprised the supporting cast was so... unknown. At least to me. Maybe I just don't recognize the cast. Some of them weren't amazing either, just kind of there.
Second, this is as close to the original as watermelons are to grapes. There's really nothing similar, and I think it's a disservice.
Johnson Family Vacation (2004)
As a kid, it was fun. An adult? Can't even!
I used to watch this as a kid. A few laughs here and there, I remember watching it numerous times. Rediscovered it recently, and have to say... didn't laugh once. It's not stupid, gross, sexual... it's just nothing. There could have been some really great parts - the cast has great potential. I just feel like my couch cushions have more fun than this. National Lampoon's works because it's silly and sticks to it - this just needed to find it's way!
The Staircase (2022)
"The Same Staircase"
I only watched one episode, because... bleh.
Great acting by many cast members. Firth truly embodies his characters' missing personality, and I think Posey will go far. Such a talent!
I just couldn't fathom wasting more time with it. It wasn't wretched - but it just wasn't too intriguing. A wife dies, the man is the suspect, he's having an affair.... Now where have I heard this before?? Oh, yes, on every single dateline episode.
I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore. (2017)
Vigilantism for dummies
Potential for greatness here. I'll stick with... just good.
There's a sense of true believability in the first 3/4 of the movie. Now In 2022, the ideas of egoism, unjustness, and bad attitudes ring true. I really felt connected - this could happen to anyone.
I wouldn't say this is a vigilante movie. Just someone wanting answers, and, like myself, for people to not be a**holes.
The last 1/4 was much more unique. Personally, it's why I downgraded my rating. It became much less believable and the "thriller" side came out, but it just wasn't the way I had hoped it would turn out.
It's a solid movie - just that it never hit greatness.
Being the Ricardos (2021)
For fans? A flop. Everyone else? Eh.
I am a HUGE I Love Lucy fan. I've seen it all. Obviously, my standards were high.
As a fan, this was a mess. No one really captured their character. There were small glimpses, like when we saw iconic scenes. I know looks aren't everything but dang, this was off.
It was boring, dark as in the movie was made to be too dark, and there wasn't anything keeping me from browsing on my phone.
ParaNorman (2012)
A Lighter yet still creepy good movie.
The first thing I noticed about this movie was how gorgeous and life-like it was, but still keeping the typical stop-motion pieces. On top of that, the story is very powerful. There are a lot of commentaries about life and people. Zombies are people, too. Love is louder. Revenge isn't key. Etc. I liked that it was "funny" - there were definitely moments where it was the typical "stop-motion freaky time" but... it had some great side-kicks to the shy main character. I love Elaine Stritch as Grandma - made my day to hear her voice! The only complaint I had would be that this movie might not be as strong in a few years, or once the looks wear off. I know a lot of people are comparing it to Coraline, and some not in a good way. This is very Coraline-esque, with the horror being not so blatant, but building. That is what I love about these movies. I think it is also comparable because the main characters in both go through a sort of similar situation and kind of act alike. Both are good movies. Go see Paranorman!
Political Animals (2012)
Over The Top Goodness
This is one of those shows that is great for the whole ensemble. It would suck without the people that are in it. Everyone does a great job for the role they have. It has apparently gotten so-so reviews, and I am not sure why. Yes, it's over-the-top, but what isn't? And that doesn't mean it is bad. It is crazy in a great way. Every character has his/her hangups. As with all TV shows, it shows everything that has happened/can go wrong, and makes it seem real. This show feels real. Maybe I am biased - I would vote for Elaine. I am sure that the creators knew that, because Secretary Clinton (inspiration for the show) is a lot like Elaine. I think that, because it is a mini-series, people are so harsh on it. It would do great as a full- series because it would give time to focus on what needs to be focused on. But hey, I love it and I think everyone will.
