Rewinding all the way back to Bladerunner; well the making of Bladerunner, there's a chapter with Harrison Ford describing how the director would be sitting high up in a crane, barking down the radio; I want a 5k here, a 10k there, smoke billowing from that fan, more rain, make that area darker and so on and so forth. Ford was hired to play a part that needed direction and all the director could say is 'you're an actor so act'.
I like Scott, there is a human side to him and I've felt it first hand however not everyone is like me. Most can't see beyond the pail and need direction.
My point is that most folk find it really difficult to create something from nothing. HF found it difficult to create his part bc he had no reference point. Very few actors can equal Brando in making a silk purse from a sows ear and Pheonix isn't one of them. Napoleon needed a cast of Joan Crawfords, Charlton Hestons, Kirt Douglas; a cast of egos all vying for attention, breaking through to create a mammoth spectacle which would neutralise inaccuracies in the script and make for thorough entertainment. But sadly for reasons unknown those actors are seemingly from a time gone by. Ridley is a great man but if he left the visual direction to his second unit and focused purely on extracting the maximum from the talent in hand, I 'm sure those actors could perform to award winning standards which would negate the other flaws in the film.
