Napoleon (2023)
4/10
Listen to learn, learn to listen

Rewinding all the way back to Bladerunner; well the making of Bladerunner, there's a chapter with Harrison Ford describing how the director would be sitting high up in a crane, barking down the radio; I want a 5k here, a 10k there, smoke billowing from that fan, more rain, make that area darker and so on and so forth. Ford was hired to play a part that needed direction and all the director could say is 'you're an actor so act'.

I like Scott, there is a human side to him and I've felt it first hand however not everyone is like me. Most can't see beyond the pail and need direction.

My point is that most folk find it really difficult to create something from nothing. HF found it difficult to create his part bc he had no reference point. Very few actors can equal Brando in making a silk purse from a sows ear and Pheonix isn't one of them. Napoleon needed a cast of Joan Crawfords, Charlton Hestons, Kirt Douglas; a cast of egos all vying for attention, breaking through to create a mammoth spectacle which would neutralise inaccuracies in the script and make for thorough entertainment. But sadly for reasons unknown those actors are seemingly from a time gone by. Ridley is a great man but if he left the visual direction to his second unit and focused purely on extracting the maximum from the talent in hand, I 'm sure those actors could perform to award winning standards which would negate the other flaws in the film.

Masterpiece slightly let down by unintelligible dialogue at times
14 October 2023
I have come late to this film, but what a surprise! I was gripped from the opening. The character development is thorough and well fleshed out. Understanding the characters from the beginning pays off at the end. The story is fluent and interesting. The dialogue is dynamic diverse and I would imagine thoroughly researched, God there's some nasty pieces of work out there. I've marked it down by one point because some of the dialogue is unintelligible. I was hitting my rewind button on and off throughout the film because it's annoying not to hear all the dialogue. Once again mixers have fallen into a trap of knowing the dialogue so well they under mix it in favour of music and effects. Though this is not as bad as some films it was still affecting my concentration. I have a fantastic movie theatre experience at home where all the channels are discreet and separate and even turning up the centre channel didn't make it easier. I know making a point won't improve things because over time they have only got worse. But a marvellous film beautifully shot perfectly acted brilliantly scripted and Thelma's editing was absolutely immaculate. My hat is off to Thelma she must've worked so hard to achieve what she did.

The Menu (2022)

Did I missed something..?
4 January 2023
The opening showed potential but the dialogue was 50% unintelligible ( I needed subtitles; I have a quality home theatre) the editing was choppy, no pun intended.

Quickly descended into an implausible mess Kept cutting away from ATJ and others when you needed to be on their reactions. I can't believe the reactions were so poor the editor stayed on the speaker. ATJ can be especially animated so cutting away wasted performance opportunities.

Good to see Arturo from Narcos.

There were more plot holes than in Eric Bristows dart board. The whole thing didn't add up to a row of beans. 2 stars plus 1 for ATJ's silk dress!

Renegades (2022)

Directors should direct, editors should edit
15 December 2022
Unstylised, dreadful editing, out of sync shoddy sound effects and unmemorable music gave this souped up sweeny the feel its budget was about £10.89p The whole thing was uncomplimentary; the thugs were made to be remedials. Thick as planks. Thugs in Heat or Narcos are given intelligence because it raises the stakes and give us intrigue. The script was boring and predictable; I was honestly guessing correctly was the next line was throughout.

This lot could have been taken from the bullies at my secondary school in 1978, not one charismatic among them. Even the fights were crude at best like they were slapped together after 8 pints of lager. To me the whole film looked like it was made by a bunch of drunks from start to finish. The saving grace were the night shots across London which looked good.

Alien (1979)

In space no one can hear you scream
27 August 2022
First seen in 1979 , I was 15 Mum dropped me off. Seen once every five years since.

Seems to get better and better as time goes on, maybe because as I mature, I appreciate the fine acting details or is it that there are fewer and fewer films to compare Alien to. Alien is a masterpiece in so many areas (in no order); Editing, photography, acting, direction, art, music, sound, script. In fact Alien ought to be mandatory viewing for every film director whether budding or currently or even as a refresher for well seasoned film makers.

It's so clear Ridley was able to make the film he wanted to make without interference from non creative parties.

12 step?
25 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Terrific performances although we only get a glimpse into the world of smack, it's true how neurotic Family members can become. The doctor says she would do four days detox and then get into 12-step but she goes home and does not go into narcotics anonymous meetings. I find this very strange. She would have little chance of staying clean without narcotics anonymous, she should have gone straight t NA , found a sponsor and started working the 12 steps. This was the only inaccuracy although in real life this will be a serious one.
