Kongekabale (2004)
Clever political thriller
A very clever and insightful thriller, this decade's All The President's Men, though without Robert Redford. Brings new angles on the government conspiracy theme. No doubt will be remade as a big Hollywood Studio thriller but unlikely to improve on this thought provoking original. The writer was himself a former top government Spin Doctor. Since the film was released real life events have made the curious leap of imitating fiction in the USA and UK with high profile political scandals, suicides and leaked information. Part of a string of strong political thrillers in recent years including Syriana with George Clooney. Maybe he will be in the remake.
Der Untergang (2004)
3 hours of my life wasted to find out Hitler was a bad guy but human.
Maybe this will start a new trend for showing histories villains in a new light. Watch out next year for Pol Pot the musical. He had a funny side as well. Unfortunately the film misses a great opportunity to say something original, and is a one trick story, filmed from the perspective of Hitler's bunker. And at nearly 3 hours they have gone for trying to show painstaking detail at the expense of intelligent film making and judicious editing.
This film fails to deliver on many fronts, and ends up as a simple curiosity.
Go rent the Mel Brookes The Producers and see Hitler in a different light.
Non ti muovere (2004)
Penelope Cruz better than Hilary Swank
Cruz is never less than fascinating as the witless, kind, determined Italia. As in Monster (Charlize Theron), part of the fun comes from watching a celebrity actress become almost unrecognisable. With her badly-applied mascara, trailer-trash blonde highlights, sluttish mini skirts and thrift-shop synthetic tops, with her stiff, bandy-legged high-heel waddle and her rag doll floppiness when passion threatens, she is an entirely believable denizen of the urban and social borderlands. The film is a triumph, and it would have been interesting to see if Penelope Cruz would have beaten the other Oscar nominess had the film been release in the USA last year.
