Kaakkaa Muttai (2014)
Subtle and heart touching
I went to watch this movie under the influence of good reviews and had fairly high expectations. This movie just stood to this test.
I would call this story as euphemism - a harsh reality presented in a mild way. Though the story is about two slum kids and the problems they face owing to their poverty, no fuss is made about their craving. Instead it takes shape of a story of their hard work and dedication to fulfill their desire. It manages to touch your heart.
Direction is just superb which is assisted by some catchy music. The combination of the story of slum dwellers with some peppy music reminded me of slumdog millionaire.
Watch it. Such movies are hard to come by.
Court (2014)
An absolute gem of a satire
I heard of this movie through various critics and decided to catch it at nearby cinema hall. The experience was a total satisfaction.
The movie is a satire on Indian judicial system and has been dealt with so beautifully that it neither delivers the message on the face nor it becomes offensive at any point. It is an absolute gem. Though the movie is in Marathi language the subtitles attached to it help an average moviegoer.
The movie does not have too much of moving camera shots and in most of the scenes, director just places the camera at one location and the events unfold in a still frame. This is such a wonderful piece of art that despite no known faces and no fancy camera work the movie works. Not just works but its bang on target.
I would strongly recommend this movie to any sane and rational movie buff for quite a few days to come.
Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015)
Sweet pure love story
There are certain films that you go to watch with low expectations and they just blow you off with impeccable story telling. DumLagaKeHaisha is one of them.
There is hardly any moment in this 2 hr movie that can bore you and every scene has something to offer to the viewer. Its a simple story from Hindi heartland set on the basic premise that love cant be forced, it will happen if it has to no matter how the opposite person looks.
Performance wise lead protagonists - Ayushman Khurana and Bhumi Pednekar - are good. More importantly their odd chemistry works. Sanjay Mishra is top notch. Other supporting cast is also noteworthy.
Director Sharat Kataria is the one who deserves maximum credit for this lovely movie. He does not give too much space to melodrama and keeps the narrative simple. He does take some cinematic liberties to tell his story but that can be easily ignored. Finally, kudos to YashRaj banner (which has produced some obnoxious movies recently) for supporting this movie.
Go watch this movie. It deserves a share of your income to say the least.
Badlapur (2015)
This is what I call real cinema!
To set the record straight, Badlapur is the the kind of movie that someone would either love it or might not be able to digest it. No middle ground here!
All situations in the movie seem to be straight out of real life. No exaggeration, No heroism! The lead protagonists in the movie have their brighter and darker side, just like a common man. The revenge saga in the movie is well written and the climax to this revenge saga is out of the box, realistic and subtle.
Talking about performances, each character in the movie is nicely crafted and has some importance. Obviously, Nawazuddin Siddiqui is the showstopper. Clearly this guy is from some other planet! Special mention for Varun Dhavan for having tried something different. This is his fourth movie and he hardly lets you feel that. Huma Qureshi, Divya Dutta, Yami Gautam, Radhika Apte, Vinay Pathak - all are efficient.
Direction wise the movie has the feel of Shriram Raghvan's previous outing 'Jhonny Gaddar'. In fact, it is notch better here. Background music helps the narrative. The screenplay could have been bit tight though and it is the only little snag in this movie which otherwise is a wonderful piece of cinema.
So, to all those who complain that bollywood produces only standard formula based thrillers and revenge drama, my answer is go and watch Badlapur.
Shamitabh (2015)
New story and good performances make Shamitabh a one time watch!
One thing that helps Shamitabh in making it a decent watch is a new story line. The concept itself is not yet tried in Bollywood. The trailer pretty much speaks about the story yet watching it unfolding on screen can be interesting.
The second great thing about Shamitabh is the performances of Amitabh and Dhanush. Dhanush just nails it again and manages to get noticed even when he shares the frame with Indian legend Amitabh Bachchan. Kudos!
On the flip side you might have wanted the screenplay of the movie to be more tight as there are few dull moments in the movie which at times hamper the narrative.
Nevertheless, Shamitabh is a one time watch owing to fresh new story and decent performances by its lead protagonists.
Dolly Ki Doli (2015)
Predictable plot. Some genuine laughs and some speed breakers.
Make no mistake Dolly ki Doli has some really good funny moments. But still, Dolly ki Doli tastes like a half baked potato.
If you have seen the trailer you will pretty much know what's going to happen next in the movie. Though first half is a decent one, the story of the movie is too convenient in the second half. Performance wise all have done a decent job. But, direction is pretty ordinary. Its really a shame if you have to include 4 songs in a movie that runs less than 100 min. Also the predictability of plot does not help much.
As a whole, the movie is an average fare. Watch it if you don't have anything else to do.
Baby (2015)
Not exceptional! Yet one of the better bollywood movies
Well, I compromised with my sleeping time and went to theater early morning to catch Baby just to see what the director of 'A Wednesday' and 'Special 26' has come up with.
So, Does he live up to the expectations? No. Is the movie worth watching? Yes.
The movie revolvers around a special team of secret agents formed to counter rising terrorism in the country. The team goes out in pursuit of a terrorist who had escaped Indian prison and who is planning multiple terror attacks in the country. In their pursuit they accidentally end up finding the ultimate mastermind and what they do to bring this mastermind back to India forms the climax of the movie. The movie revolves around India, Turkey, Saudi, Nepal and Pakistan.
The pace of the movie picks up as it progresses. The thrill is built up by its pace, some well executed sequences and the background music. However, at one point of time you might feel that the background score is too heavy on your eardrums.
The performances of actors in the movie are accurate and even the smallest role (barring lead protagonist's wife) create an impact. The direction is adequate but the movie is let down by the plot which quite clearly draws its parallels from Oscar winning film 'Argo'.
Nevertheless, this Akshay Kumar starter 'Baby' is crisp and indulging cinema. You might watch it once for fun and then let it go off your mind!
