Blood Diamond (2006)
Good but.....
Omg, could have shaved off 30 mins of this movie if the makers didn't try and extend its audience to include the usual pointless love scenes.
Hmmmm. Well this film was realistic in its portrayal of the conflict in Sierra Leone thats for sure. As someone that was in Sieraa Leone around Freetown aged 15 in 1985 when a coup occurred whilst I was watching a football match and also being offered to smuggle diamonds back to the U.K. by Lebonesse and English in toothpaste tubes (which I didn't do) this film echoes the continuing rape of third world countries by government entities such as my own. This is nothing new of course and 22 years later things are still the same. Blood diamonds indeed.
Leonardo is pretty good in this and the accent not half bad. His character is a bit weak though as South African soldiers are usually tight lipped and hard as nails to the extent of eating glass with shots of booze. They would'nt divulge information to a newly met reporter thats for sure ! Sharing a bottle with a 'kaffa' is something also highly unlikely with a soldier from Rhodesia. White S.A. don't like or respect the native inhabitants of Africa.
Films worth a look, bit long and the love scenes excruciating for me but thats my personal taste.
Nothing new here
Derek and Clive Get the Horn (1979)
Interesting
Studio stuff worth watching.
It is hard to see why people say that in this film Dudley and Peter show they dislike each other so much. My impression is that they were both very fond of one and other and at many times this shows my looks of admiration whilst one ad-libs. It is likely during their love & hate relationship that each admirers the others comic prowess. I would not ever consider them as comic genius as this sort of comedy is something that is in all of us. They just have the 'don't care' attitude to let rip. They do say things that you wouldn't usually hear yet the capacity to say it and understand it lies within us all - it's just been suppressed by the crud we endure today as 'comedy' and the political systems in place today curbing freedom of speech.
I enjoy this form of comedy Derek and CLive do and am appreciative of material such as this. Talking boll0cks and being stupid is what we need to see more of and this film delivers it - though anything else would likely be imitation.
I've no doubt that though Cook (due to his own personal feelings and struggles in his life at that time)comes out with the odd put down to Moore, my conclusion is that Moore was Cooks' rock and punching bag. I'm sure Moore knowingly accepted this whole-heartedly and this reinforced the magic chemistry of their friendship between them and appreciation of each's well of talents.
They unleash them here but it would be easy to see that they were capable of being a hell of a lot naughtier ! Sadly, all good things come to an end.
Watch it with a few beers and with your friends and feel alive.
Donnie Darko (2001)
tragic Over-rated movie. Waste of 2 hours.
Jeeze, what a seriously overrated movie. OK, a few stars in it like Swayze but nothing spectacular.
I think people like to say this film was good as they think it makes them look intelligent. Nothing new in this movie, painful to watch to be honest. I understand the story but found it all very very dull. Yawn factor 8/10. Americans must be rating IMDb because as a Brit I thought it sucked BIG time. Time travel, OK, interesting subject. I'm sure we all have our own idea about it if you are a thinker and are remotely interested. I was ungripped by this movie. The actors were pretty grating. Donnie Darko was annoying - dude needed a slap and pull himself together. Tacky, I should become a director or create some dross like this I'd make a fortune. If this is the stuff that turns people on I could churn garbage out like this in my sleep.
A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004)
What dribble
This was the biggest pile of tripe I have seen for many a year. The best thing in it was an actual actor - Meryll Streep though she has to be desperate for cash to be in it.
The special effects were acceptable bearing in mind its all been done before. I was very nearly walking out of the viewing with this film as Jim Carey was annoying the heck out of me. He needs to take a lesson from Steve Martin and disappear. The dude is no longer funny and I got to a point where I wanted to punch his face in.
Though not the same type of film as Harry Potter (Potter is in a different league) I think that the makers of this film would have tried a lot harder to win it affection if the likes of Potter were not around to wipe it out in superiority.
Maybe children would like this film as it appears their taste over the years has been abused to accept any old dross.
I think there must be money laundering going on in films these days or massive tax saving incentives for people to make this kind of stuff knowing full well how awful it is.
Naff, predictable and story full of holes. Waste of money all round.
Cidade de Deus (2002)
Grim Look At Reality
This film was more like a documentary about Rio. I do not understand how IMDb has given it a 8.7 out of 10. A subtitled film does not warrant this film a score as high as 8.7. To be more than fair I would give it a 5 for effort. A movie having subtitles seems to turn on viewers and make them give more credit than is rightfully due.
Average movie with insights to real life in shanty towns/favela's.
I was disappointed to be honest. The cast were not too great. Very short cameos so unable to gauge the actors abilities though acting was not really included in this film.
Film might appeal to those that have no exposure to how the other half live.
Layer Cake (2004)
Oh my god more tripe
This movie is not even worth a review. Movies like this should be paying people to watch. The plot could have been thought up by a 10 year old. The acting mediocre if only just passable. Why are movies like this being made? Just like the rubbish music industries churn out just to rip people off outta their hard earned cash. My faith in movie making it ebbing and more crud like this proves my point.
Yawn factor 4.5 / 10. This film would appeal to gangster-wanna-be kids that have no idea of what a good movie should be and have become accustomed to this kind of dribble.
If you think this movie was good you've already been brainwashed and so your expectancy levels compromised.
Damn its annoying paying to see this crap.
Spider-Man 2 (2004)
I don't work for them myself
Firstly please excuse grammar + spelling, just knocking this out quick.
Yuck, its a shame 'Mary' comes running out of the wedding at the end of the film to be with 'Spiderman' as its odds on she'll be in the next one. This is not good. This movie was at times like a chick flick. Mary (the girl Peter Parker likes) appears as a selfish, attention seeker that in all honesty Spidey should tell her where to go! wow she was an annoying brat - maybe she's a cast members daughter trying to get a break :)
There was the usual action in the film at times (few and far between this 2 hour movie)the special effect were good (natrually for this day and age)but so were they in 'The Day After Tomorrow'
The actor playing 'Dr Octo' was 'convincing' and acted the part well.
As you might gather the 'lovey dovey' scenes cheesed me right off. This is mainly because I think the girl playing the part was lame in all areas. If I go to see a super-hero action film I expect to get that. People may argue that the scenes were needed to show that Spiderman is a human being with emotions. I argue that if 'I' was looking for realism (for example how the heck could spiderman ever change clothes in NY without being picked up on a CCTV at least once - if we are trying to be sold a true story) then I'd go for something a lot less comic hero based or sci-fi. Call me old fashioned but I want non-stop roller-coaster action for 2 hours and if it cant be delivered give it to someone who can. What next? Peter Parker spanking the monkey or Aunt May setting up a phone sex business from her new pad? please. no.
The film conveniently sets itself up for the next episode which I personally wont be holding my breath for. It never seems to fail to surprise me that with all the money spent on some films and the brains behind them that all they come up with is an average movie. Well, that my pennys worth - saying that it'll probably be the No1 film this year with the way the advertising blows things outta proportion. Its a real shame. These superheros go back decades and decades (their our heritage!)- its a duty to show them at their best or don't show them at all just for the sake of $$££.
One other thing, lol, there is a point in the movie where a girl shows Peter some kindness and gives him some choc cake and milk. I'm of the opinion that this was purposely put in by the makers humorously to show the duality of how the greater thinking public think. The girl (cake and milk) is everything that 'Mary' is not as she is humble, comes over as genuine and not self absorbed. Maybe most people will not even notice and just be carried away with the brainwashing that is. Maybe I'm the only one that viewed that portion that way, anyhow I'd go for the chocolate cake and milk girl everyday fo the week. regardless I'm pretty sure I know a decent movie when i see it and i did not see one here. bye
peace. Realistically 6.9/10 for effort
obtw - if your UNDER 18 u prob will dig this film lots :)
