Life (2017)
Good cast of actors, terrible writing
This movie really did scared me, but it didn't make any sense. It breaks the suspension of disbelief so many times that I really wanted to stop watching it after a short while.
Basically the ailen life form is too powerful and smart. It's as if it has limitless energy, has no fear, has the capability to use tools at a very early stage, exteremely durable, its senses are too sharp, and all of this information is apearent very early in the movie. It looks like very little thought went into designing the creature, and a lot of priority given to just pure horror. It's lazy writing in my opinion.
Bunch of popular Hollywood actors are hired for a script that looks like a fan fiction for Alien. Even the Xenomoprh was less powerfull and intelligent than this movie's creature.
It's just disapointing, however it taught me a lesson; never judge a movie by its cast, or budged.
Flatliners (2017)
This movie has nothing to tell
I watched this movie in Netflix after seeing it promoted as the 10th most watched movie in my country, and I was curious about how they explored life after death, and I was deeply disappointed.
I speak directly to creators of this movie, you had one of the most imaginative source of creativity in your hands; life after death! You can explore anything you want, anything! Multiverse, higher dimensions, time travel, different perceptions of time and space in higher dimensions, and you can go to any of the religious text for inspiration; Abrahamic religions, Buddhism, Zen, Shamanism, Nihilism, Universalism, Atheism, old religions, new age theories... and yet, you go nowhere with it. You sort of try to walk from experiences of people who had near death or out of body experiences, but do very little with it. The only thing that you seem to have knowledge or proper assistance of is medical science, and even in there you don't explore the possibilities. Our sense of time, space and self might get distorted or disolved in an out of body experience, and nothing like this is explored in this movie.
Some bland ghosts, some special effects, some sex, some more ghosts, and the message of the movie is; don't do things you might regret! The who experience was bland, the end message was bland, the whole thing is unmemorable.
Valorant (2020)
Great art direction, old and clunky gameplay
The artists did a really good job on visuals, UI, voice acting, animations and customizations. But the game itself is like a CS:GO mod with terribly designed abilities.
The gameplay is a mess, it's clunky, it feels very slow, the shooting and movement mechanics are outdated and missing modern features, like vaulting, climbing, sprinting. Although the visual artwork is great, the game tries to run on all PC's that run CS:GO, so everything looks flat and low poly, especially the environment.
And the microtransactions, they are very expensive, and they sell skins, their animations and variants separately. The season pass has very low value imo, the skins there are very tamed compared to overpriced premium skins in the shop. And as of this moment, there are no character skins in the game, just weapon skins, animations and sprays.
Devs are constantly updating the game with new skins, but new maps and characters drop very slowly. Even when I liked it, it was boring.
Shahsiyet (2018)
Never seen anything like this come ot of Turkey
When I heard the premise, I thought it sounds like Breaking Bad, and I loved that and Better Call Saul, so I gave Sahsiyet a go. Yes it's a crime drama, but it's much more emotional and psychological.
The cinematography is top notch. The framing, cuts end edits, the music, colors... all of them complement and support the setting beautifully. The story is very captivating, and the pacing is near perfect. If I'm not zoning off and trying to imagine a better situation for a show, that show deserves a good score in my opinion.
Split (2016)
Surprisingly good, in a terrifying way
Really good horror and thriller. You'll love it if you liked Shyamalan previous work "Unbreakable". But you might feel uncomfortable amounts of cringe when the movie drops the (spoiler) Shyamalan bomb (/spoiler), twice!
Great performance from all actors, especially James McAvoy did a great job. His portrayal of this unusual split personality disorder is really creepy but also fascinating.
The main actress Anya Taylor-Joy's character was also a very interesting, deep and particular character. We see get to know her as we get the know McAvoy's character Dennis.
The movie overall has good pacing, the plot makes sense in itself, but the conclusion is somewhat unsatisfying. It's not bad, it's just not that great.
See it if you want to see a really good psychological horror.
Rings (2017)
Bad, but better than The Ring TwO
It's not that bad actually. I always lower my expectations when before I see a movie, and this one felt like watching one of the Silent Hill movies. Nevertheless I though it was better than The Ring TwO.
See it if you're bored and if you felt betrayed after the second movie. This will give the series some sort of conclusion in your mind, far from what it deserves though.
Grave (2016)
Great cinematography, but bad taste of horror
The movie looks and sounds good. Lighting, colors, composition of shots are really good. But if you're looking for a good psychological horror movie, this will not give you what you want, it'll only make you throw up a lot.
About the context, the excessive sex and blood doesn't bother me. But scenes of animal torture, consuming raw meat, puking hair covered in stomach bile is just disgusting. It's not horror, it's repulsive. I don't feel fear when I see these images, I feel disgust. Maybe that's your thing, maybe you look for this in your movie, I can respect that. But movies such as this should not be tagged as "horror" movies, and I don't thing they deserve high scores simply because they're "radical".
I actually got sick watching this. If you don't like movies like this, I suggest you stay away.
Ghost in the Shell (2017)
Faithful adaptation with original twist
I absolutely loved 1995 movie, and I think this is a really well made adaptation with an original twist to it.
It's really unfortunate that people think this movie is "whitewashed" and most fans set their expectations unreasonably high. ...(minor spoiler inbound)... so called whitewashing is a part of the story.
Even if you don't know the original material, if you're into cyberpunk, futurism and crime stories, you must see this movie. But expect a depth of Ex Machina or Her in this movie. This movie isn't even in the same category as those movies.
Beautiful mixture of practical and cgi effects, existential, futuristic story, a faithful adaptation and with original twists.
Hard Candy (2005)
Am I supposed to feel good in the end?
Great cinematography, inconsistent character design, disturbing sense of morality, extremely predictable scenario.
***Major Spoilers Ahead***
This movie is about watching a pedophile get tortured so that audience can feel satisfied. Intelligence of characters are very inconsistent. A moment you'll see our main girl do something incredibly smart and then incredibly stupid and retarded. Same goes for the guy.
Extremely predictable, I could see events from miles away. Half of the movie I was like "don't"...
Now this part is going to be a little out of topic but, why the hell is it too bad to be a pedophile, but watching him tortured for more than an hour is OK? Who thinks this is good? People really feel good watching a man experiencing hell on earth? Do you think murderers, rapists, thieves etc. should be tortured to madness, to suicide? I'm really disappointed in humanity. Especially after seeing this movie's score.
Best part about this movie is it helped me understand how the religious concept of hell might be invented by people. We just want revenge. We are sick, blood-lusty, greedy, upright apes who will never be able to tell the difference between right and wrong.
