Nell (1994)
There's moving and then there's Nell
I am speechless after having just seen this film once again. The first time I think I was about 14 and it moved me deeply and still does. I know that there are some tear jerkers out there but this film really hits the mark.
You have to see this film at least twice to fully grasp what's going on, not because of the film itself. There is no weakness in this film, at least none that I was aware of - others might disagree, that's what reviews are for. However to really appreciate Nell's character to feel and understand what is really going on for her and to get rid of this notion that she is simply a 'wildwoman' because to call her that is just too crude and simple.
I love the personal and emotional touch of this film. It isn't your namby pamby moral of the story type of film or your typical 'happy families' movie. I love the escape and distance from the urban jungle away to a more peaceful lifestyle. Being at peace with nature and yet realising the fears of loneliness and the fears of coming into contact with the outside world. But we all have to face loneliness sometime for good or bad and we get by somehow if we have the will to do so. And with a little help we might even find we make some unlikely friends along the way. Yes this film isn't namby pamby at all but it definitely has a lovely and emotional edge. Definitely a good film to watch to put life into perspective.
Blade: Trinity (2004)
A Big Miss
I was really excited about seeing the third Blade movie 'Blade: Trinity'. But sadly, the minute the strange slow motion credits rolled I already began to have my doubts.
To sum up briefly: 1) The film felt slower than the first two with less substance 2) I was disappointed with Dracula. Especially after having a fantastic Nosferatu godfather of the vampires type character in the 2nd Blade film. Dracula was unconcerned with the plight of the Vampires and his attack on Blade just felt unreal and pointless.
3) What on earth was wrong with the really scary strong and powerful vampires? They mostly looked like they'd been living off heroin for 1000 years not blood! 4) Snipes seemed to be trying harder to keep to the standard of his previous two Blade films. But he looked fed up mostly and tired. I dunno, maybe the director didn't know how to get the best out of Snipes but the other thing that bugs me is that Vampires aren't supposed to age. Tell me if I'm mistaken but I'm starting to notice that Snipes isn't his perky youthful self these days.
5) Apple Ipod?! I think the idea to have a bad ass babe listening to her MP3 player during battle was just a bit too stupid. Careless directing me thinks...She was OK, but again maybe the director just didn't know how to get the best out of the actors. And that Reynolds guy was really annoying! I really wanted him to die at the end.
I wish I had waited to see this come out on my Sky movies channel instead of paying £6 or whatever to see it at the cinema. Thankfully I didn't decide to see this film on my birthday, I saw House of FLying Daggers instead and it wasn't as disappointing. At least the directing was fantastic, the cinematography fab, the editing tight, and the actors acting looked right. Nothing was amiss.
Hopefully if a 4th Blade film is made the director will pull things together. Get the best out of the actors, ditch pointless ideas and sloppy editing which make the feel and look of the film and acting seem slow. Get rid of the made for television style.
Eddie Izzard: Circle (2002)
Eddie goes full-circle in USA
I totally get it when peeps say that this isn't Eddie at his best.
I get it, but do you honestly blame him? Stuck out with those blimmin' dry humoured Yankies. I can feel like he's thinking' to himself "do I have to explain everything I say to this bunch??" and there is a lot of that going on. Like everything he's saying he's thinking too hard and trying to make sure they get it. But I think he's also conscious of this and tries to tone that side of it down a bit - god ain't it just a frustrating situation to be in?
I do like it, he raises some interesting stuff and makes a point of introducing a little foreign culture to an otherwise ignorant nation who don't even know what the hell's going on in their own town let alone their country and you can forget the rest of the world unless somebody tells them.
I can't imagine what the audience thought of Eddie and his great look. In england you're so used to flamboyance and decorative people. Unless you live in tiny village somewhere where the only shop consists of a post office and a broken down phone box...believe it or not there are still places like that even in Hertfordshire!
I wonder if Eddie broke throu the hearts of the American audience at all? He didn't go on about his love life, he didn't go on about wife beating, drinking down the local bar, he didn't go on about family or friends. He talked about really intellectual and fun stuff. I love it that he mentions World War 2 and Private Ryan unscared to touch upon such a 'tender' subject but without being overly offensive in anyway but just matter of fact. I love how different his stand-up is to most common sorts of stand-up. It isn't all "Don't you just hate it when" or "Have you ever walked down the street and noticed how..." or "I woke up one morning and found my wife sleeping with the milkman".
So although this isn't Eddie at his best it is still great viewing. He looks stunning (as always) in his leather and shiny black tight shirt get up. Very bondage come European wannabie cowboy. All he needs now is a cool hat and maybe even a nice little whip. And there are some very funny tangets he floats throu. At times I found myself laughing more at the bits where no one in the audience was laughing at and the bits the audience was laughing at I found myself zoning out completely feeling only vaguely amused. So it's a mixed bag full of fish (good and bad) and I say try it and then decide for yourself. :)
