Evil Dead Rise (2023)
Nailed it
Might be the best Supernatural horror I've seen in a long time. It's perfectly dumbed downed and everything has pretext. You know what's about to happen & you sit there with anticipation instead of boredom. If you want to be nit-picky, they missed an opportunity for a Bruce Cambell cameo. That said they pay homage to the character but most of homages didn't really hit the mark tonely for me. They create a story where all the the previous lore can exist. It answers all the questions except one but it can be overlooked.
Bottom line, this movie should please fans of the entire franchise like me & create new fans.
Farzar (2022)
Par for the course
If you don't enjoy this than you're not familiar with the creators previous work. They're shows are about the characters and the puns. Also if you like spoofs than this is for you, add in some 4th wall breaking and I'm here for all of this.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)
Cool adaptation
Imaginary is loyal to the games, and pretty fun movie for mainly kids but adult fans of the franchise should enjoy it. Now Jaleel White is voice of Sonic to me and the movie is 30 minutes longer so Natasha Rothwell could be great.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Rick & Morty meets Shaw Bros.
The only thing that keeps this from being a 10 for me is: it gets sentimental at times but that is also more of a break of from the fun. It's an early favorite for favorite movie of 2022.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Gotta stick around for it to male sense
Better than I expected, not just a cash grab. It was complicated but made sense. Would've like to see the original Mr Smith, a little more humor and I'm left wondering what's the actual end game. 7.5/10.
Old (2021)
Timely horror movie...see what I did
Intial trailer peeked my interest but later full trailers made me doubt it. Without giving anything away either those later trailers I saw were initially misleading are someone said let's not do that after they were seen. Questions got answered and I didn't have a lot to complain about. I gave it bonus for a unique idea that was entertaining. I might be scoring a star higher than this movie actually was but it corrected any issues I had with the trailer. I had one main question and one issue and they both were resolved.
Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021)
Was Lebron supposed to be the villain?
Good things; the Toon Squad Lebron colorway, looking in the crowd for different characters, and I liked the video game ideal. The movie should've been dumb fun, but it was what I thought it would be, bad and mostly boring.
The House Next Door (2021)
Bet the outtakes are hilarious
I went in expecting a spoof but what I got was a bad comedy horror. The editing is probably the biggest issues. The feels like a cross between Fright Night and Vampire in Brooklyn and was probably a good ideal on paper. The only laughs for me really only came from the actors cracking jokes on each other.
Army of the Dead (2021)
Almost wasn't disappointing
For a two and half hour movie it would've been better served by cutting a hour. The movie tries to have an intriguing story and be a self aware, ridiculously fun movie but it fells at both. The acting is there but the story isn't. I would've preferred a ridiculous fun movie similar to Zombieland. Without giving much away the ending makes the story pointless.
Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)
It's a sequel
My only real criticism is that the movie felt rush, another 30 minutes would've helped. There's some subtext that people will either hate or love. Chris Rock gives you a couple routines early in the movie for add enjoyment if you like his standup.
Psycho Goreman (2020)
The trailer...enough said
If you watched the trailer for this movie and were disappointed; that's your fault. Heavily reminiscent of The Grimm Adventures of Billy & Mandy. The Dad was the best part for me and I did think it could've been funnier but that would've made it a spoof.
Mortal Kombat (2021)
I get it
I get anyone who loves or hates this movie. The fight scenes make up for a lot. The movie is different enough from the source material to stand on it's own and I enjoyed the throwback Easter eggs. I got what I expected for the most part.
The Chi: Brewfurd (2020)
Moving on
This episode feels like a reboot of the series but I'm invested and can appreciate the grounded storylines
The Chi: Foe 'Nem (2020)
Unfortunate
This episode is what happens when real life gets in the way. After a great second season, the premier is a tough watch.
Coffee & Kareem (2020)
Someone thought this was a good ideal...
Someone else said yea let's make that movie. The movie's only redeeming quality for me is it gave work to black actors. There are a couple of chuckles but the overall film offensive.
Hoops (2020)
Profanity isn't funny on its own
Ron Funchess made the show watchable for me. Ron's clean character was a needed contrast to the forced profanity.
The Assignment (2016)
How does cast exist in the project
This movie is the equivalent to trans blackface. With the number trans actress out there the cast of Michelle Rodriguez is offensive.
Rambo: Last Blood (2019)
True Title
Rambo: Eviscerates Brown People while Enforcing Mexican Stereotypes, but doing it Spectacularly; Last Blood
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
Tryed to cram to much in 2hr38min
On the plus side this movie was 99% accurate based on the book. As a person who has read the book and seen the Swedish version of the book, I really felt this movie had a pace that didn't do the book justice. The movie has a feel that all the events took place in the course of few days or couple of weeks. If you read the book or watch the Swedish version you will know what I am saying.
Another plus to this movie is that it touches on certain scenes that were apart of the book but left out of the Swedish version. However because you only have a few hours to summarize a book it felt like they only grabbed the exciting elements of the book. The Swedish version is very slow paced and I almost stop watching it in the beginning but it really picks up and makes that first hour feel worth it. I felt like I was watching it forever and on the other hand the American version zoomed through. Which is funny considering the American version has a longer run time.
As a reader of the book I recognized the full story behind things they only glance over and I would have felt better about this movie if they were left out. for example the merger of Millennium and Vanger is a big plot point in the book and if your not going to use that storyline then it should have been left out of the movie.
I gave this movie 5/10, good acting and actuate for the most part but lack the scope of the book and the Swedish version.
