He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (2021)
Too Many of You Are Purists Overlooking the Importance of the Message
I grew up watching He-Man and She-Ra. But in an age where you can get the original version of pretty much everything including the 1980s He-Man, do we REALLY need a replica?
Absolutely not.
THE IMPORTANT PART IS THE MESSAGE THAT DEFINITELY CARRIED OVER!
So what if everything else is tweaked? I do not need the 2020s shows to be twins (intentional word usage) of the originals. I need updated versions that take the bare bones of the story and make it logical for a world 30 years in the future.
Plus, the original theme songs and clothing were terrible. You only liked them cause we were children.
House of Hammer (2022)
BDSM and Abuse are Two Very Separate Things
Why is it shaming and hurtful to blame the alleged rapist and torturer on social media but it's not hurtful to shame and blame and accuse the ones who are potential victims? Cancel culture is not as alive and well as rape culture as many of these reviews are demonstrating really exquisitely. As if losing some jobs is worse than being tortured & raped. Everyone's reputation is on the line. Treating the women as guilty liars until proven innocent and right is just as bad as what you accuse them of doing to Hammer. Hypocrites all over the place.
Second, BDSM is all about consent and communication. Abuse like this is taking the physical parts of the kink and leaving out the communication and consent. Gaslighting is not a kink. It's a psychological weapon. It's a tool to wield when you need to feel superior to someone else or because you get off on hurting others. They aren't the same. Educate yourself about kinks cause you are making yourself into a liar and gaslighter by perpetuating made up rumors and definitions yourselves.
If you didn't like the style of the doc or thought it didn't help the understanding of the situation, that's legit. All those other criticisms are less concrete than saved messages from a crazy actor.
Expedition Unknown: Expedition Unknown: Egypt Live (2019)
Slow Down, Captions Couldn't Begin to Keep Up
I love Expedition Unknown and I LOVE everything about Ancient Egypt.
With that said, I have a hearing disability and between the captions being super slow on live tv shows and the absolute INSANE speed at which they are talking means I missed almost everything that they said.
It might be okay if Discovery had thought to fix this issue when they put it on their streaming platform, but instead I have spent the last half hour replaying ten seconds of video over and over again. Unwatchable. I have absolutely no idea if it was interesting or not.
Adding a bunch of unnecessary words to my review here at the bottom so I reach the character limit, sorry actual people reading this.
Fire Country (2022)
Good storyline, but only three decent actors
The casting director needs to look for a new day job. Out of a dozen cast members only three could act - Kevin Alejandro, Billy Burke, and the actor who played Freddy.
The worst offenders are Jordan Calloway, Stephanie Arcila, and Max Thieriot (the latter is pretty much the main main character). Thieriot at least has good moments. Calloway and Arcila shouldn't be cast in a high school production. The others are a range of mediocre. There is a lack of chemistry between Eve and that Calloway guy too. So forced.
The bad acting takes you right out of the scenes on what should be an interesting plot that we haven't seen 100 times before. It's unfortunate.
Unsellable Houses (2019)
Very Unlikable Sisters
These sisters might be talented at what they do but I would rather go bankrupt than work with the two of them. I don't know if it is an editing problem or if they are really that way. I can be brutally honest and crass and they STILL seemed over the top with it to me. The way they treat their clients as if they are complete morons is so unprofessional. On top of that they seem to love to brag on themselves, which can be charming in people but they cannot pull that off. Apparently since they are good at what they do no one has ever told them they have terrible personalities.
Chopped: Yucca, Watermelon, Tortillas (2009)
Alternative Title
Alternative Title for this Episode:
Eggs, the Floor, and No One Wants to Sleep with a Technician.
Great episode. My favorite episode so far in Season 1. I am watching them through first to last!
The Big Bang Theory: The Thespian Catalyst (2011)
Missed the Mark for Me
I really have loved watching this show. I don't ever binge and I have binged up to this point. This is truly a unique and hilarious show. However, this episode missed the mark for me. It was one of those episodes that shows do when they've run out of ideas. The plot was amazing, but the execution was clumsy and derivative. And the Bollywood dance was just awful. They could have done so much more with that.
Hillbilly (2018)
Most of these reviewers did Not watch more than 20 minutes
This documentary goes out of it's way to challenge the stereotypes and the exploitation of the Appalachian people. I grew up in a small city but my family is from Appalachia and I went to college in a town in Appalachia that was too small to even have a store. We had to go to the next town for that. I have often been called a redneck or a hillbilly or been told I come from a family of inbreeders simply because my family is from West Virginia and Alabama. I have been ashamed of my family because of all of the negative stereotypes surrounding rural and mountain peoples. This documentary hits on this very thing.
This documentary touches on politics but it is not in any way have a liberal slant other than she says her family used to be a democrat and they voted for Trump and wanted to know why they and other people there voted for someone who in all other ways disrespects the values of the Appalachian culture. This is not political and leftist. This is actual journalism. Asking questions and not judging. It even explains how both the left and the right have increased the stereotypes of Appalachian people and have both co-opted the culture of the region for their own benefits. It shows that the area has people of different races, sexual orientations, political affiliations, ethnicities, etc. Just like anywhere else. It shows that Kentucky is not the generalized backwater boonies and that the Appalachia region is more than it is made out to be. It is actually one of the most non-biased docs I've ever seen.
Midnight Mass (2021)
Painfully Slow & Painfully Obvious
I could tell exactly what was going to happen before the second episode was over. The villain was obvious, as was what she was doing. Plus, the pacing dragged and I didn't care about any of the characters. The only redeeming quality was to show that fanaticism is not what faith should look like.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
A Drawn Out Conglomeration of Other Movies
Often predictable if you've seen either of these movies, (esp. Hannah & Miles & Peter), but I did find tweaks that made it different enough to make it interesting. I wouldn't bother watching it again, though. The Others and The Skeleton Key are both much better done.
The acting is very well done. Amelie Bea Smith (Flora) could become a star if she decides to continue with an acting career. She's brilliant. However. Victoria Pedretti (Dani) was pretty awful. How she managed to snag such a nuanced character I do not know.
The main problem I have with Bly Manor is it is far too drawn out. It could be at least one episode shorter, if not two. I am not sure why they thought it needed to be nine episodes. Episode 8 alone felt 3 episodes long. The info gathered was good, but it was way too drawn out.
Secrets of the Zoo (2018)
Great show, but less about secrets of the zoo, more of a vet show
This really is a good show. The staff is delightful and knowledgeable and care about the animals in their care.
My one and only complaint is that this show is 75% about the zoo vets and about all of the health issues and artificial insemination of these animals, with the occasional pregnancy & an animal ambassador thrown in for good measure. While extremely important & interesting, there is so much more going on behind the scenes than just the vet and knocking up animals.
There is very little to nothing on the everyday routines, nutrition, habitat upkeep, enrichment activities, the crazy inner workings of the jobs of the curators, etc. Etc. They could stand to branch out a little.
Watch The Secret Life of the Zoo on the Chester Zoo in the U. K. or The Zoo that shows the Bronx or San Diego. They have broader scopes that might interest viewers who love this show but want more.
What on Earth? (2015)
Calm Down
The show is just offering mysteries to the viewer to draw their own conclusions about the mysteries, instead of being spoon-fed all the answers. So what there are some conspiracies presented? So what they offer theories that don't pan out? Learn to use your brain instead of needing the Science Channel to tell you everything. Research something you want to know more about. Stop asking everyone else to think for you so you can regurgitate stuff like a child.
Love, Death & Robots: The Witness (2019)
Great Animation, Predictable Ending
It has gotten to the point where twists are no longer twists, they are predictable and obvious, much like in this story. The animation was beautiful, though.
Love, Death & Robots: Sonnie's Edge (2019)
Overrated
The style is okay but the characters are flat and lifeless, and the story is bland and boring. I can't fathom why anyone would want more of this. If this had been the first story featured in the series instead of the 4th, I would not have bothered watching any more of it.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Better Than Edge of Tomorrow and Here's What Makes it So
1) There is no silly romance involved and taking away from the plot. Edge of Tomorrow was basically a romance drama mixed with Groundhog Day (can we all just agree that has been done to death?) with a touch of sci-fi thrown in just for kicks. The Tomorrow War was an actual sci-fi action flick.
2) The Tomorrow War doesn't take itself so freaking seriously. Yes, the jokes could have used punching up, but there was a lot of humor built in under the surface, also. If you only look for a bunch of Tony Stark punchlines, then you miss stuff.
3) I am guessing those leaving bad reviews about how they weren't prepared to be at war have never been to war and do not understand the drafting process. You go through a quick bootcamp and then you are dropped in a hot zone. You do not get to just train until you are amazing. That is not what in-the-minute war is like. Was it a little sloppy and ultra rapid-fire in the movie? Sure. Again, it's a movie. But it was not anywhere close to as unbelievable as critics would have you believe.
4) Tom Cruise was not in it. That right there makes it better than Edge of Tomorrow. Tom Cruise can't act his way out of a paper bag. He is the exact same person in every. Single. Movie. You seen him in one action movie, you've seen him in all.
5) Yes, at times, it was predictable, but every action movie is predictable. They are all formulaic. At least it wasn't as formulaic as Edge of Tomorrow. You might suspend belief at times during this movie, but at least the characters are not so stupid they die repeatedly and have to start over again like a video game. Talk about suspending belief.
MINOR SPOILER:
The toxin absolutely WAS used, and used to the very last alien. He literally punched the toxin into the female alien's mouth right before she fell. So that point critics are using that it was barely used is completely wrong. They weren't paying attention.
One of Us (2017)
Understand this is a film about only the worst parts of a community that is more than the sum of its parts
While it does a good job of raising awareness about insular communities, there is a LOT of manipulation in this film. While I am in no way an advocate for insular communities that have no oversight to make sure the members are treated correctly, I am concerned that the way the Chassidic community is shown in this film is manipulative. It only shows one Chassidic community, one of the most insular, and does not accurately reflect Chassidic holistically. Viewers need to understand that this film is about how hard it is to leave and therefore only shows the negatives, the dangers, the worst case scenarios. There is little to no understanding of the Chassidic community, only how weird it is to outsiders. It is shown through the eye of outsiders and non-Jewish individuals. If you watch it, watch it with this awareness.
Azali (2018)
Starts Off Okay, But Quickly Disintegrates
The beginning 20-30 minutes got me very interested in the story, but then it lags so badly and for so long that I no longer cared what was going to happen. There are stretches up to 10 minutes where there is little or absolutely no dialogue AND nothing happening. It is just panning the area they are in and while it is beautiful scenery and people are going about their daily lives in the market, I don't understand the point of how lengthy these segments were. I think the film could have benefited from a better editor. With all that said, the lead actress did a pretty good job working with a bad script. The message is lost in the confusing mess that is the final film.
Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Naked Now (1987)
Unpopular Opinion: One of the Better Star Trek Episodes
Admittedly I am far from a Trekkie, in fact if it were not for this episode I would never have watched any of the rest of the series. This episode allows the actors to break character, although I am not sure why it happened so early on in the series. It would've been more welcome, I think, later on once the characters were more developed and fleshed out. One problem Star Trek has always had for non-Trekkies is that it takes itself so seriously. It is science fiction. Have some fun with it once in a while!
New Girl: Par 5 (2015)
Winston Shines, Jess's Story is Worth Fast-Forwarding Through
The race relations conversations were very well-done and I loved that they gave Winston a chance to shine in ways other than just stammering and saying random things. I just wish they had paired it with a storyline for Jess that wasn't so incredibly convoluted.
Suburban Gothic (2014)
Tim Burton-esque Horror Comedy
Matthew Gray Gubler is perfect in this. Ray Wise is at his best. Kat Dennings is underutilized, though. She has great comedic timing and presence and is not given enough of it to perform. The editing could have been tighter, giving it more flow. But I like that this movie is exactly what it wants to be and is unapologetic about it.
If you like quirky movies, this is for you. If you like your horror straight, best to skip this one.
The 100: Nakara (2020)
The 100 Thinks We Are Dumb
This is the third time THIS SEASON that The 100 has had zero faith in its audience, not to mention its characters. HOW COULD YOU NOT TELL THAT WAS NOT A CAVE? Acid? Ever heard of stomach acid? The beginning of the cave was clearly a throat. It's just beyond stupid that they did not figure it out sooner. Beyond.
American Factory (2019)
Interesting Topic, Bad Filming
The first thing to do is skip the first 10 or 11 minutes. You don't need it and it is slower than a snail. The next thing is that this film could be cut down by at least 30 minutes because it is full of dead air time and bad splicing and editing.
The topic of the Chinese billionaire buying an old GM factory in Dayton and putting some of the people of Dayton back to work and working through culture clashes (the high ups, not the American & Chinese workers who all seem to get along like old friends), is very interesting and the only reason I stuck with it.
This is the third documentary I've seen by Netflix that is about something incredibly thought-provoking but isn't made very well. I hope better ones come along in the future that serve their storylines better.
Into the Inferno (2016)
Interesting Info Put Together in the Least Interesting Way Possible
I think that just about sums it up. Herzog has a very grating voice and I have never cared for his documentaries for this reason. Now I have another reason - editing. Volcanos and cultures are fascinating, how is this documentary slow and boring?
Vikings: The Joke (2018)
Very Underwhelming
Aside from some great scenes during the battle that echoed a throwback to earlier seasons, this episode was full of filler, odd character behavior, and odd writing decisions.
1. Exciting though scenes during the battle were, the battle set-up makes zero sense. Vikings did not conduct pitched battles where they stand in a line and charge at each other. Also, there were no shield walls and no arrows shot except in the forest scene. These were staples of Viking warfare, not to mention the show.
2. The peace talks dragged on for-ev-er. First they send emissaries, then they exchange brothers as hostages to try to talk them into switching sides (neither of which worked), then they allll meet in the middle of a square to talk some more, at which point Ivar does his supposedly unpredictable yet completely predictable "just kidding, I'm actually insane" dance. Nothing was altered in any way from the day before. It was just useless filler.
3. Ivar becomes unpredictable again, but in a way that doesn't fit with the character's nature. First, he leaves the battle scene to go back and take care of the ships. Why not send someone else? Did he decide he did not want to kill his brothers after all and thought this was the best way not to look chicken? But then he stops to listen to the fight, hears that he and his warriors are needed, and chickens out again. He just sits frozen in the landscape. Unpredictable behavior, sure, but not in a way fitting with Ivar's personality, imo.
4. Oh, Floki. Except for how you killed my favorite monk cum warrior papa cum monk, you are my favorite character. But can we talk about how adrift your Icelandic saga currently is. I know the historical Floki brought the Vikings to Iceland, but the way this is written could hardly be worse. It would make more sense for Floki's Iceland storyline to be in less episodes with more storyline per episode. Only 15 seconds happened to move the story forward and that is Eyvind explaining why they could never go back to Kattegat, which, as I previously said, could've been in a different episode. I think (I hope) this storyline will come to a big climax, but it is not a smooth journey to get there.
The battle itself was nicely filmed with tight shots of the combat and a flowing alternation between battle sites and characters that did not feel forced. I appreciated that. However, IMO it does not make up enough for the serious lack of quality writing in the rest of the episode.
New Girl: Dance (2014)
Last 10 Minutes Makes The Rest of the Episode Worth It
It's pretty slow and almost uninteresting, then you get to the last 10 minutes and it makes everything worth it. Laughed so hard I choked.
