Poldark (2015)
Excellent in every respect
Everything about this series is topflight - the writing, the acting, the cinematography, the set decoration.
Having read the books, I can say with certainty that each actor understands his/her character and portrays him/her with depth and sensitivity. Aidan Turner IS Ross Poldark, and both his loves, Demelza and Elizabeth are equally well enacted.
The supporting roles are also enacted with sensitivity and flair.
Filmed on location in Cornwall, even the scenery contributes to the overall production values.
If you like quality productions don't miss this one.It is well worth watching, and I look forward to future episodes.
And Now a Word from Our Sponsor (2013)
A word from any sponsor would be better than this awful movie
I kept waiting for this movie to have a point, a plot or a personality. It never did.
Characters appear out of nowhere, no backstory is ever explained, the few motivations supplied are not sufficiently fleshed out enough to make us care about the characters, and the ending is magic realism in spades.
Adan Kundle, the CEO of an advertising company, can only speak in advertising slogans. So he sometimes appears as an "idiot savant" along the lines of Peter Sellers in Being There, but without the brilliant writing which gave that movie its heart.
After the first hour I kept watching because I had already wasted that much time and I hoped for some resolution at the end. It never came, and I ended up wasting all the time I spent watching it.
Do yourself a favor and don't waste YOUR time as I did.
Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012)
To quote Roger Ebert, "I hated hated hated hated this movie!"
I do not find ignorance, squalor and stupidity to be noble.
This movie was incoherent and jerky, had no clear plot line, glorified degraded living and had no redeeming value.
IMDb insists that I write 10 lines of commentary about it, but I accurately summarized it in my first line.
I suggest that unless you want to watch people living in filth and ignorance, stay away from this film.
I realize that the title was meant to be a play on wildlife documentaries, but it seems to me that it is more accurate perhaps than it intended to be. The characters in this film had no more understanding of life than some beasts in the field. Yes, they appreciated some of the beauties of nature, but that did not make them admirable.
Jane Eyre (1997)
The best ever
I frankly did not expect much of this movie, and found to my complete surprise that I was blown away by it. Samantha Morton, in my opinion, IS Jane Eyre, and that is not an easy thing to accomplish, given the vast number of performances, famous and otherwise of this same character. Those of us who love Jane Eyre, both book and character, are also usually very picky about how she is portrayed. Ms. Morton, without histrionics, and with great subtlety expressed Jane's character. And it is Jane's character which drives the entire story. Strong, wise, honest, honorable, brave and with great heart, Jane should make us all proud to be women. In a society which honored her not at all, she was both plain and poor. But, she had such great self-respect that she stuck to her vision of honor in spite of the heart-piercing pain it cost her. Ms. Morton conveyed this deep sense of self through body language, diction and flair. I say, if you are in the mood for Jane Eyre, this is the one to watch.
