Coming 2 America (2021)
Very Fun!
This sequel was a lot of fun and also touching at the right moments. Our whole family (appropriately aged) enjoyed it as we'd watched the first one again a few months ago. A lot of the favorites from the first one were there and the new characters worked in perfectly. Enjoy!
The Bridge Curse (2020)
Not 'The Grudge' Level but still good and enjoyable
I know everyone is talking about the acting but the point of this is to bring an enjoyable horror movie with a twist. They're not trying to be 'The Grudge' but it's still enjoyable with those similar elements but a very different story and a good end twist. I think it's worth a watch if that's the kind of movie you enjoy. It's all sub-titled, though, so I'll agree that you need to be sitting down and paying attention throughout.
The Grudge (2019)
Move Curse - Successful / Scares - Not as much
So I'm a big fan of The Grudge series of movies and have also watched the Japanese versions and the new series on Netflix. This movie adds to the franchise by moving the curse to the US.
However, because the curse is now based with an American family we do not see the ghosts from Japan which are really the central figures to the franchise. It could still have been successful but they didn't do the same type of makeup on those killed in the US, including the little girl, so those figures were not as intriguing or nearly as scary. There was none of what I've come to love such as the image of the Mom in Japan crawling down the stairs, head first, on her hands and knees making the signature creepy noise. There were certainly a few good jump scares and, don't get me wrong, some good makeup and effects but it loses something without the signature look.
Overall, I enjoyed watching the film as another part of the franchise but felt that it just lost something without the same attention paid to the ghosts that really makes the other parts of the franchise cohesive and really bring the creepy unnerving terror.
Needful Things (1993)
I loved the book - I hated the movie
I just reread this book as I've been gathering together all of the bits about Castle Rock to watch the show of the same name. I love the book. The characters are perfectly placed against each other and Leland Gaunt is a truly creepy character throughout. As I read the book I pictured Sheriff Alan Pangborn as portrayed by Michael Rooker in 'The Dark Half'.
When I finished the book I was excited to watch the movie as I'd never seen it before. I rented it and was Thoroughly disappointed. I know that a movie has a short amount of time (the book is massive) but the enormous changes they made to the characters was terrible to see. Also, while I like Ed Harris as an actor he didn't really match up to Michael Rooker. Rooker brings something grittier to the character. Also, one of the biggest problems was that they completely left out the Sheriff's pain from the death of his wife and son about 18 months prior to the events of 'Needful Things'. This adds another layer to the character that the movie is sorely lacking.
Also, Max von Sydow is possibly my favorite actor of all time but not even he could truly bring the evil to the character of Leland Gaunt that is shown in the book because the movie creators didn't use any effects to show showcase Gaunts's oddly shaped fingers, the changing color of his eyes or even his true demon form shown at the end of the book. How wonderful it would have been to see the 2 sides of von Sydow played off of each other as he was transformed into the kind of demonic evil that he fought as Father Merrin in 'The Exorcist'.
Also, for some reason I truly can't understand, they tried to create an affair between Polly and Gaunt. This was a huge disappointment as it then completely left out what happened in the book in regard to the charm that she buys from Gaunt to get rid of the painful arthritis in her hands. One of the best scenes in the book is when she throws the charm and it opens and a spider comes out. A spider which quickly begins to grow and Polly has to fight and kill. This could have been amazing onscreen but for some reason was just ignored and this weird tryst with Gaunt was inserted instead. Terrible.
The movie is a full 2 hours but the pace felt all wrong and the 2 hours were not used wisely. I think that this movie is ripe for a remake that would allow it to be much closer to the evil and tempo of the book. I hope that we see that sometime in the future.
Delirium (2018)
Topher Grace is good in this - It's not a horror it's a thriller
OK - So I watch a lot of horror and also psychological thrillers. I'm able to suspend belief to enjoy a movie and that was necessary in a couple of places here but didn't take away from my enjoyment of the movie. And, I didn't completely figure it out (although I had an inkling in spots) until late on so that's always a plus for me.
If you're someone who's really picky about movies and screenwriting and everything then probably not worth your time. But if you're looking for a good thriller to enjoy with some popcorn I'd recommend this. And remember... Turn your lights out! (It's later than you think.)
Tusk (2014)
Only if you like movies like 'The Human Centipede'
I watched because I'm a fan of Justin Long back to 'Jeepers Creepers'. I was also surprised to see Johnny Depp in this movie.
**Spoilers**
This is a strange movie that doesn't go anywhere that you'd think it would. I was hoping for something creepy and fun. It turned out to be very strange and kind of nauseating. This is why I never watched
'The Human Centipede' because I knew that that kind of movie was not for me.
The main character is turned into some disgusting kind of walrus made from human flesh. The only part of the movie that was enjoyable was the acting of Justin (before he was a walrus) and Michael Parks who really carried the movie. I also enjoyed the part where the walrus exacts his revenge on his creator in the last 15 minutes or so.
The Devil's Chair (2007)
Andrew Howard (Nick West) carries the movie on his back
I was on the fence whether I should vote 4 or 5 on this. While this horror flick is interesting and has some good effects in regard to the chair itself it definitely lacks in some areas around acting and story. (For example, the main character is in an asylum. He's released to a professor who wants to write a book on what happened when Nick's girlfriend was killed. Probably not such a smart idea.) However, the lead actor, Andrew Howard, really is the lynch pin that keeps the movie together. If he hadn't been as good in the lead role I would definitely have rated this lower. He enables the movie to have enough interest for you to want to see it through to the end. There is the usual blood and guts but overall it happens in the right places and isn't done without advancing the story. If you're a fan of B horror I think that you'd like this. If you only watch horror occasionally I'd pass on this one.
