Parallel (2018)
Such a great idea wasted
I really had very high hopes when I read the main idea of this movie but the screenplay, cast, acting all failed miserably. A real opportunity missed.
Gods of Egypt (2016)
Surprisingly fun movie
I usually don't watch this kind of movies anymore - if you check my ratings or watch list; you'll see they are either classics, independents, award winners or more artistic films mostly from Europe.
Since my wife loves Egypt history, I got this one to just watch movie for making fun and probably not watching until the end.
The first minutes of the movie seemed as I expected, especially the American characters and accent was kind of disturbing and hard to blend in the movie. After a while, we got pulled in the movie somehow and enjoyed watching it except some cliché love dialogues here and there.
It's got what it takes for a movie, good acting, coherent scenario, no surprises with a good guys win ending.
I am sure action lovers will definitely love this movie and others would enjoy it. Recommended.
Bir Avuç Deniz (2011)
Clichés, bad screenplay and bad acting but somehow interesting!
Starting with nice yachts and cute girls, the movie comes really appealing during the beginning. After the yacht trip, the movie basically turns out to be a man in the middle of two women; the nice girl and the bad dangerous girl. A cliché topic that has been in so many romance movies in history. However flaws arise first in co-actors/actresses who seem quite fake and really bothering. Then comes up the "big talks" about life, fate... These talks are extremely superficial. Bad screenplay takes over right away after the yacht trip ends and real life begins in the city. You cannot really believe in it because all they do is talk; such as how crazy the girl is even when all she does it's to stay home and watch TV. Plus, so many clichés keep on being told during break-ups and make-ups, it makes you wonder whether it's a comedy. Especially, the conversations between couples are as if teenagers are talking although our guy is supposed to be a well educated man with masters degree from Columbia University and managing an international company. Still the movie keeps you interested until the end not because it was aimed, but because of so many "this cannot happen" events which make so many dramatic turning points changing the movies' direction every quarter hour. Keep an eye on Tuzunagac's performance though, one of her best during her career especially when she is not over-acting.
Vanvittig forelsket (2009)
Starts promising but lacks clever scenario
The movie really starts promising with a depressing atmosphere around talented piano student Daniel which is also giving a hint about his feelings and how his psychology will be... His unhappiness, shyness in front of the audience and the girls, tainted relation with the mother and the suppressed feelings about his father's death -suicide- due to the his mental problems. The first part of the movie has a coherent screenplay that makes you root for the depressed emotions and the happiness with finding love - sweet Sophie.
All these ends when the hero starts the suspicion and envy for the girlfriend. It feels kind of fake and enforced in the scenario that even though he's so explicitly dictating about his jealousy and doubts about the girl's fidelity and her relationship with his piano teacher, Sophie keeps on stuff that will provoke him such as flirting dances with the teacher or hanging out with him even though they had no contact point except Daniel before.
Beginning as a drama and continuing psychology/thriller movie, the end is a cliché; lovers are apart.
Except for some aches in the screenplay, it's still a good movie especially if you're somehow related to Scandinavia.
Oh My God (2009)
What a piece of disappointment
The summaries and the plots I read about this "documentary" made me expect something better; I was not expecting a nice anti-religious movie such as "Religulous" or "Zeitgeist" but I think there should at least be a main idea in a movie; it could have been more respectful to the above-the-average watcher to give a thesis such as god is there or it's all fake.
Instead, the movie consists of some people answering what is god such as "God is love", "God is money". Most of these "interviews" look real fake and not sincere. Especially the religious officials look as if they memorized their part and their faces gives the impression they don't believe what they say. The fact of Hinduism with many gods is neglected where a Hindu girl is saying "God is one". I feel like "Come on man, just Google it before you direct a movie!" The last part is the double-standard of the movie against Islam. Even though, it shows respect to all the religions when it's Islam, there is attacks against it trying to show it as an aggressive and wild religion where Mohammed is the worst of all prophets. Personally, I really wouldn't mind but it really looks quite unfair when the director's perspective to even tribal religions are fair and earnest.
To sum it up, it's a terrible movie. The only good part is the nicely shot scenes from different countries. Stay away unless you have an hour and a half to waste.
Yahsi Bati (2009)
Terribly boring screenplay with quality costumes and art directing
Since Cem Yilmaz's movies are becoming worse and worse every time (i.e. A.R.O.G), my expectations were really low on this movie. On some of the aspects, these were met. For starters, the screenplay is really dull, based on all the Turkish cliché jokes about Wild West. The jokes are not funny at all and the level of them are too low. And as in most of the movies of Cem Yilmaz, the scenario is not coherent, it's like jokes about Wild West in a stand-up comedy, which have been cast in a movie and glued together. The worst thing is that there is an inconsistency in the movie; it's supposed to be Ottoman Turks in Wild West but all the lead characters (including the Americans) are acting as if they are Turkish such as the Sheriff of Cannonball and his family. Still, the art directors has done a high toned job - they must have had worked a lot on the storyboard, there are real nice scenes through the movie - I have to say the costumes are quite good, too. In conclusion, it turns out to be a movie not to waste time on, maybe to be watched on a Sunday afternoon on TV while doing some other stuff.
A.R.O.G (2008)
One of the worst Cem Yilmaz movies
Cem Yilmaz, the ex-standup comedian has made quite nice movies such as G.O.R.A, the Magician, Everything is Going to Be Great. I was one of the followers of his movies as well. However, A.R.O.G really puts his level of quality so much down on the ground - if not underground. For starters, the idea/plot is actual "inspired" from the French comedy "RRRrrrr!!!" which is really a bad movie, A.R.O.G competes with it and surpasses "RRRrrrr" negatively in many ways. Unfortunately, Cem Yilmaz's movies turn out to be parts of his stand-up show which are pasted into his movies lately. The screenplay is non-coherent, the characters except himself has not too much to say and the jokes are becoming more and more ordinary. I have seen the movie on a special movie day, paid around $3 for it. After the movie, my feelings were that I was swindled. Not only for the low price and the time spent. I wouldn't see it again if I was paid for it. Do yourself a favor and be aware of this movie.
District 9 (2009)
Total waste of a great idea
I have waited quite a long time for this movie since I read the news during production. The idea of aliens on Earth being treated as immigrants was quite exiting and new. Despite all the good hopes about the movie, it turns out to be a real disappointment.
The screenplay is not coherent for the starters, kick-off as in a documentary, it turns out to be monologue and then ends like an American action movie.
Also, the holes in the scenario were extremely disturbing. I felt really ashamed for what the director did. Some points of these were;
- How can a spaceship come to world and not be researched for 20 years? - How can two guys enter a NATO kind of office, kill everybody and steal what they need? - In the last part, how can the human race leave the destiny of all aliens, escaping spaceship to the hands of a crazy lieutenant? - Why do they end every movie with a final fight, in this case Crazy Lietant and the Dutchmen?
I know it's a science-fiction. But it doesn't mean you have to neglect all the flaws. Could have been a classic if the producers were elaborate.
Seytanin Pabucu (2008)
Lacking clever screenplay
It looks like it has a coherent, clean plot but the screenplay gets extremely ordinary, simple and stands on some jokes which are even low level for small kids. The only surprise is the ending though, the only moment where you can get a little bit of amused. The cast is OK, there are some experienced actors on some of the roles but the lead is Faith Urek - he's one of the low quality gay singers of Turkey. His acting is worse than his singing, too. The only nice thing about the movie is the looks of Aysun Kayaci. The ex-model, new actress shows no progress in her filming skills. If you'd like to go and observe Turkish cinema, please do not take this one into account.
