Blueberry (2004)
Native Mysticism allows for great movie experience
Having heard about this movie since January, i really wanted to see it. Then having seen the full-length trailer a few weeks later, it just made things worse. Now flash ahead 5 months later, i finally got my chance to see it thanks to a limited DVD release from another country. I must say that i thoroughly enjoyed this film, as did my dad. Both of us being fans of westerns, for one, but the second reason was the Native Mysticism thats prevalent in the movie. Being Navajo Indians ourself, the Chiriquahua Apache Shamanism was what made the movie stand out as a whole. While some may argue this is biased from our viewpoint, we felt thats its what made the movie great. With the director, Jan Kounen, and Lead Actor, Vincent Cassel, having said that they respect and shamanism and its properties, its a treat to see them take real immersion in this project. Being proud of our native culture, i felt that this movie allows others to see how deep the our beliefs can go. Its really an honor and a tribute to know how much Europeans are interested in our culture. While many may argue this score, i give it on the principle that it goes in depth with Native Mysticism and as a different kind of western. 9/10
Dobermann (1997)
Can't believe i didn't notice this film!
Having seen Vincent Cassel's previous films (Brotherhood of the Wolf, Irreversible, La Haine), i wasn't sure what i'd expect from this. Low and behold His performance as Yann was great. A great story with nice action blended in. Jan Kounen had great direction with this film. I admire his work now after watching this. Hopefully Blueberry will come here in the states soon, as i am waiting anxiously for it. But back to Dobermann. The opening church scene was a good way to establish Yann's roots as an anti-hero . From the bank heist to the Jo Hell Club gunfight, the intensity of the movie never dropped. Akin to Tarantino-style films, its no wonder i enjoyed it. Kudos to the Kounen/Cassel partnership as it yields great results.
