Girls: Japan (2016)
Happy to see a non-White character portrayed positively!
I am so proud of Lena Dunham! This is a huge step forward for white women in America! I was impressed that this episode portrayed an Asian character who was a three-dimensional human being with real emotions and characteristics - romance, reflection, and humor. I'm happy to say that this episode was fun to watch! It wasn't the usual Americans hating on and belittling an Asian person.
If the makers of Girls want to add some real flavor, stir things up, and make some real and genuine change in the world, then the show should introduce a feisty Asian girl who becomes a recurring character. This never happens on an all-White show. If there is an Asian girl who comes into an episode - they're given one line or maybe at the most minor appearances in one episode, then never seen again. If Lena Dunham wants to be "the voice of a generation" she needs to expand her thinking. Because right now she is a voice sure. But not nearly of a generation. Maybe try "a voice consisting of the over represented demographic of young White Americans". I wonder if the show would step up to the challenge of expanding its racial boundaries even more. This episode was positive, definitely. I doubt it would do better than this though, because show makers tend to mask racial insecurity as "oh the public, and the market won't all this diversity business". But of course that goes with the assumption that Americans only like to watch White people. I have hope for Americans though. I think people genuinely enjoy more than plain vanilla. It's a nice little cycle that the movie and entertainment industry has going for it though. Extremely convenient for White producers and directors to only cast White people as "people"... A bit self-serving of a rationale really.
But good start! (Or good one time thing! As it usually is)

Exciting Concept, Poor Character Screen Time Allocation
Good show, love the diversity of characters and how each one brings something to the table. Except I do have huge issues with the blonde girl. Blonde girl is painfully annoying. She somehow has a crippling clinical depression and at the same time the world's best house DJ. She can't drive a car without having a meltdown, yet she's somehow capable enough to perform (let alone show up) in front of thousands of people. Plus she is the only one without a talent to help the others in her group. What is she going to do? Depress the living goodness out of everyone else? Plus the camera work shows her blank face doing nothing except "looking pretty" for way too much time. Can we see some character development instead of her mopey and "pretty" face? That is truly boring not to mention incredibly annoying, being a feminist. Her whole attitude is "I'm so special", "I'm so unique", "I'm so pretty", without actually ever doing anything. Everyone else is special, unique and beautiful without needing to tell everyone else.
I would love to see more scenes starring the Asian girl, the African guy, and the Indian girl. I think the non-western / White people are more interesting to watch to be honest. They give a different perspective than your average and predominately white Hollywood people.
Otherwise I think the show is pretty good. It was a bit slow at first, but the later episodes became more interesting. Except for the last episode which was simultaneously disappointingly anti-climatic and incredibly infuriating.
