Tumbbad (2018)

A dark, mesmerizing fable
16 December 2018
Tumbbad is nothing like any Indian movie ever made. The tale of greed told like nothing ever told before. Its creepy, dark, raw and yet so mesmerizing. The highlights of the movie are the amazing performances, breathtaking visuals without any generated imagery and masterful cinematography, on par with some of the best seen in Hollywood. The years of hard work put behind comes out together in every frame. The plot, screenplay, background score, environment creation, characters and the dialogues are all so carefully crafted and well executed. Its original to the core and does not strictly fit in any genre. when watching the movie, I could not think of an inspiration behind the story but few reviews did compare it with some of del toro's work but it does appear succinctly different. Tumbbad has taken the Indian cinema to new highs and has set its own benchmark. Indian masses are still a way adrift to appreciate something like this hence kudos to the director and the team who have put six years of hard work to make such an amazing piece of artwork which will inspire future film makers. Its modern day equivalent of Panchatantra and aesop's fables and story to be told for many years to come.

Nice entertainer
30 June 2014
Latest edition of transformers is what anyone would generally expect from this franchise. humorous, glamorous (although lesser compared to what likes of Megan fox had to offer) and above all, Massive fights among transformers and humans. film is lengthy but entertaining throughout and there are no dull moments. the action sequences are not very different from earlier movies though still they fare very well against the recent mega creature movies like pacific Rim and Godzilla. its good to see machines in action and the size does not always matter. but there is too much action and destruction to the point at which one gets bored of it. apart from this, the run of the mill alien invasion, a genius scientist, mother-ship and attack on humans are also part of it which have been seen millions of times in sci-fi movies. Michael bay although has created a niche with this franchise with nice humor content and some emotional bonding between Machines and humans which make it in every transformer movie. an A Lister like Wahlberg makes it even better. is it better than previous editions?? cannot say but watchable and entertaining nonetheless.

Lord of creatures
16 May 2014
He is back with the bang, this time bigger and better and breaths sky-fire! but yes, now Godzilla appears fewer and lesser times than in the previous editions because its not all about him for there is introduction of new monsters which would challenge the legacy of Godzilla.

Story is about a scientist and his family which in some way establishes a connection for us to meet these creatures, we know the plot is just woven and not so important, so as the presence of the actors which is nothing much apart of a being a placeholder, and there will always be a scientist which would accurately decode what these creatures are up to, predictable stuff this.

CGI is descent and fight and destruction sequences are on par with the recent Pacific Rim movie. Godzilla is introduced very late in the movie, and we don't get to see him as much one would have liked. little sad, apart from this for the most part these monsters appears in the night, not so great especially when you are watching them 3D glasses , it makes it even darker.

I wont say this movie is mind blowing, but if you are fan of mega creature movies, you for sure wont be disappointed with the scale and might of this lord of creatures!

did not meet expectations
7 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
this edition of spider man did not have much or any different to offer and does not meet the expectations. Was it only me who felt Deja Vu almost every other scene of the movie? I am a fan of Emma Stone and to top my disappointment off was her death in the movie. really sad. and Jamie Fox, really?? I cannot fathom the choice of him for the character. It could have been done with an animated character I suppose which would have looked better than Jamie fox in every sense. special effects do not help to lift the movie from the deeps of shabby and heard of dialogs, mediocre plot and screenplay, lack of originality (or is it supposed to be so, I wonder after witnessing the striking similarities with previous editions). overall, spider man deserved better of everything this movie had to offer which does not do justice to the character of really amazing spider man.

Glorified perversion
24 October 2013
The only reason I watched this movie was because Parineeti Chopra distinctively resembles Julia Dreyfus and acts a bit like her too and I am a big fan of Julia Dreyfus. This movie has an offbeat ending very different from common Bollywood endings very selectively targeted for youth but that's where it comes and mostly shoddy work is even more undone one would assume. Movie certifies Self centeredness and perversion and makes it annoyingly dramatic and twisted. This is one from current crop of Bollywood flicks which try to look cool, by throwing in some local dialects and slags which are mostly ill mannered to give it a desi touch which is badly exposed because of lack of content, cooked up plot and cheesy dialogs which miserably fail to impress. A 30 minute porn is not very different from this piece of utter non sense. This is not Shuddh desi romance..this one is Shuddh desi defecation!!

Probably the worst movie ever made by humanity
19 July 2013
I curse myself for watching this piece of crap. Why am I writing the review? well, I could not help myself but to badmouth this utter pathetic and ridiculous mess which comes expectedly from the worst two actor sons of quickly dying legend of Dharmendra because of such nonsensical work. Deol's have not done any good for their minuscule reputation that they are left with. These two monkey actors Sunny and Bobby Deol act even more ridiculous than the fake Gorilla in the movie which I dunno originated from whose fertile mind who thought it will add humor and attraction in the movie. The comedy scenes are the ones which have been shown millions of times in the Bollywood movies and lesser talked about the fight sequences the better as they not only defy all the laws of real physics but also unwritten laws of reel physics too. Only little treat for eyes are two girls who look beautiful but I could not fathom the lovely Caucasian paired against old man Sunny Deol. The legendary Anupam Kher is absolutely wasted in the movie. I cannot give zero stars as it is not an option. Don't dare watch this unless you believe a Gorilla can make a multimillion dollar painting twice by accident.

Pacific Rim (2013)

RIP Godzilla, RIP Transformers!!
17 July 2013
Epic proportions, humongous creatures and larger than life CGI not new to Hollywood movies but Pacific Rim takes it to a notch above. I wanted to watch the movie for Del Toro whose Pan's Labyrinth was the one I watched recently which was brilliant. of course, this movie is at different scale altogether but still Del Toro manages to pull it of nicely considering how these mega movies can go easily wrong and lost in plot. The prologue is short and crisp which gives background and also more then the glimpse of these monster Kaijus and Jaegars. But you may think it plays spoiler if you expected dramatic entry of these creatures but it does not happen. Its definitely not the first of its kind movie, we have seen them before I wont say this is better scripted but yes, better visualized for sure as technology continues to make progress. As of performances, probably not too much was expected as it was not the focus but Edris Alba keeps it all together and kind of drives the entire movie. The two scientist characters though seem cheesy. The real heroes are the Kaijus and Jaegars which hog the limelight and the fights between them are well crafted and CGI is brilliant to go with the rather nice plot. At the end, as it happens in most of the sci-fi stuff, America saves the world and prove themselves as the guardians of the humanity!! Contradictory to the real world one would assume, anyways a nice watch for Mega sci-fi fans and choosy watchers too. Hard to be disappointed after watching this

could have been done with animated characters
13 March 2013
For thoughts, It seems few of them took the movie seriously enough. James Franco, really?? Looks utter mismatch for the cast and proves it so, and is this the same Mila Kunis we witnessed in Black Swan?? Looks appealing but acts appalling. Rachel weisz restores a little bit of sanity to the proceedings. Great attempt has been made to pack the visual effects and in the cosmetics of the movie but little bit effort on the plot and the performances would have gone a long way. Coming to the movie, being a fantasy movie does not mean it takes away scope of building a real good story and extracting real good acting which somehow seems to be the case. Oz's transition from real world to a fantasy world and some non sense happening inside is laughable, although the bigger purpose of the movie of having descent 3D effects and entertaining the audience has been served somehow. There are few funny moments thanks to the flying monkey and other characters. But the actors overall do not add too much into it so Oz and the witches as well could have been animated and would not have made a difference such little is the effect of their performances.

One of the few watchable Hindi movies of recent past
5 March 2013
A crime thriller drama which does not fail to entertain. tale of crime, betrayal and the judgement which is told in a simple manner without any unnecessary complications. Plot is based on team of five people who are involved in illegal businesses and how one of the acts hits back carrying danger to their own lives but not without being manipulated by one of their own and eventually how the justice is sought. the movie follows smoothly throughout and builds some nervy moments on the way. some very important scenes are shown in a very placid manner without any build up which in a way do not break seamless flow of the story and of course it does not contain any songs which don't serve any purpose and comes with a nice twist at the end. All the actors stick to their characters well.screenplay is robust and the performances and the direction are suited to it. this is one of the few watchable movies where the standard of the Bollywood movies is degrading day by day.

Barfi! (2012)
6/10
Most overrated movie of the year
25 January 2013
Watched the movie with great expectations after I had heard a lot about it,but I must confess, Barfi is a highly overrated movie. Despite its fresh looks it lacks originality. it's heavily inspired from Charlie Chaplin movies and many of the scenes are directly copied from his movies. But I could not have a laugh at it although kids might find them comic. Movie is shot at descent locations in Indian hills in matching weather conditions. But the plot has many incidents which try to add humor quotient but fail miserably. With same story, one could have made a dramatic masterpiece with lot of emotions but writer and director chose otherwise. Coming to performances, Ranbir Kapoor has done justice to his character with descent performance, but at times it has too much caricature. Ileana looks pretty and acts well. the best performance however comes from Priyanka Chopra, she plays mentally challenged dumb girl. Her expressions are perfect for such a character and she has made it look unbelievably simple. I could not stop myself comparing her performance to Rani Mukherji's in Black, although Rani is one of my all time favorite, I have to say, Priyanka beats her hands down here. Overall Barfi is one time watch with boring first half which shapes up in second half. you can definitely watch it for Priyanka.

Broken movie
18 January 2013
First of all whats with the title of the movie? its catchy but hardly bears any relevance to the story. The plot and the screenplay are just good for a detective show on the television. Even when it tries to pack some thrill, the plot is so obvious that you can almost make out what has really happened. performances from Wahlberg and Crowe are decent although we have seen better from them. Catherine zeta Jones is absolutely wasted. when you watch the movie, you get a feel that you have seen this before as there's hardly anything new to offer. overall watchable once you start watching it but why should you in the first place? give it a miss. you wont miss nothing.

Life of Pi (2012)

watch for its visual brilliance
4 January 2013
Movie revolves around the stunning graphical representation of Bengal tiger and the Pi's journey in the water. That's about it and its good enough. Apart from that, there's hardly anything in the movie. Before and after the water time in the sea is nothing to write about. performances are good although not great. Best performance of course comes from the animated Tiger. Character faces are unnecessarily tanned or made up so, don't know why, to make them look more Indian? well,if that's the case, someone is in terrible misunderstanding.Bottom line..story does not pack a punch but visuals do.watch for its visual brilliance
