The Planet (2006)
Interesting summary of today's environmental problems
The Planet is an interesting summary of today's environmental problem, covering such topics as global warming, but also less well known topics (albeit still very important) such as resource exploitation and waste management.
Unlike An Inconvenient Truth this movie is based on many interviews with various experts in the fields shown in the movie. Between the interviews we are shown interesting footage of the topic discussed, for example on resource exploitation you might see modern agriculture at work. The mood of the movie is also set by rather dramatic music, which clearly emphases that these issues are important and have to be taken seriously.
The movie is not only about experts telling us about the situation today, but you also get to see "normal" people that have an opinion about the subjects in the movie, like the Chinese businessman and his take on resource exploitation as well as global warming or why not the workers from waste centers in Nigeria.
All in all this movie covers many interesting topics in a dramatical way. This dramatical tone is also what drags the movie down somewhat, as it can be too intense and too much to swallow, particularly if the topic's are new to you. Compared to Gore's An Inconvenient Truth the tone here is a lot darker and intense.
8/10 + great and interesting info, educational - a bit too dramatic and intense
Sjecas li se, Dolly Bell (1981)
One of the best bosnian/yugoslav films
One of Kusturica's earliest films, it displays many a common thing in the old communist Yugoslavia but still has an interesting setting and story that would classify as less common, but yet not entirely unrealistic.
In short this is a drama with some comedy moments. To fully appreciate the film you would actually need to have been there around the 70's, but even so it is an interesting drama of a European country with influences from the east (Soviet) and the west (USA and others).
This movie is highly recommendable, not just as a great drama/comedy but also as a great display of Bosnia some 30 years back.
Rocky Balboa (2006)
Rocky Begins
The movie begins showing Rocky's life after his boxing carrier. Director Stallone manages to pull off a rather slow drama, without the movie getting cheesy or boring. The interesting thing is that most of the character are pretty normal, and most of the situations displayed are not overly dramatic, yet the movie remains watchable. After tying the ends of Rocky's life we're quickly transported to the expected match between Rocky and Dixon, where no time is wasted on trivial details.
In general this movie has most of the stuff that made the first (and partially second) movie as good as it actually is, a display of Rocky's everyday life and as a second part Rocky fighting for his boxing dream. All this is also seen in this new movie, but cleverly converted to the new situation that Rocky is in, thus the transition never feels repetitive or unimaginable.
Of course there are some obvious illogical things in this movie, like for example how such an old boxer even can think of going into the ring with a champion, or why not mention how the brain damage that was discussed in rocky 5 suddenly has disappeared. None of this actually matters if you don't take the movie too seriously.
8/10 for bringing Rocky back to life.
