Disposal (2004)
An interesting short...
I stumbled upon this short film on the independent film network, or whatever it is called one day while channel surfing. I saw a short film just before it about bank robbers who stumble into a ghost town and get slaughtered by a demon child who summons a demon himself.
anyway about THIS film, Disposal as I JUST found out its name, was actually good. as the plot outline suggests, a rich, snobby and uptight couple kill a homeless person and attempt to "dispose" of the body in the woods. the action, was little but tense. And the ironic conclusion made me ponder a moment. I really enjoyed this short film, and would recommend it to anyone.
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)
excellent!
OK, I have heard some mixed reviews from this. but regardless of your preconceived notions of this movie, or from what you've heard, you have to see it for yourself.
the feel this movie has is of the old b- movie sci fi's of the 50's and some of the comics from the 20s and 30s, and the way the characters are all painted, or seem to be, and the special use of shadowed lighting are reminiscent of those types of films
the kind of people that wont enjoy this film are people who don't generally like that kind of film, and while I admit some of those "B-Movie" movies that i've seen were terrible, i think Kerry......Kerry Conran that is not the candidate, was on the right track when trying to bring that style into this movie. the one line that really took this movie to that level for me was when Gwyneth Paltrow said partially to her boss and partially to the audience "it's only a movie" this was in reference to her going to meet someone at the movie theater.
someone said that we shouldn't take this movie seriously because it doesn't take itself seriously. I think that's true. all of the backgrounds were CGI nothing was real, except the actors, but using it that way gave the effect that it was intended to have. and i have to say the scene in this "valley" of sorts reminded me a lot of "Rivendell" from Lord of the Rings.
The actors, in the lighting aspects were really the backgrounds, which were there but not lighted or highlighted very much, this was so the characters would stick out more, and they certainly did.
the humor itself was great, jude law and gwyneth paltrow played off each other so well. some great scenes with the two of them, sometimes not even speaking...some of it had to do mainly with facial expressions. two very talented actors, not to mention Angelina Jolie, though her part was a bit smaller than I'd hoped.
I also enjoyed the beginning, with the series of superimposed scenes upon one another, basically setting up the whole movie. i will admit, i was a bit disappointed that the robots at the beginning weren't in the movie as much. of course i was hoping for a massive battle scene, and that was my preconceived notion. but being let down by that fact was quickly replaced by the grandness and majesty of the film. The use of lighting in the beginning contrasted with the rest of the film was good. it started out being really dark in the city streets and to the attack of the robots, and later on got a bit brighter.
I don't know if Kerry Conran wrote this alone but the conflict and humor was well written into this movie. though i see many people found many things quote unquote "wrong" with this movie, as for myself i cant find much. though personally i pretty much like every movie. a few things irk me about some films, but mostly i enjoy the way they were made. even though no film is perfect, i enjoy the production of the film probably more than the film itself. being an aspiring filmmaker i tend to look past the film and see what the director or writer or editor or whatever was thinking when they made it. you can definitely learn a lot from behind the scenes or commentaries.
If you haven't seen this, you should, at least to get your own view of it rather than others. i would say though, don't take it too seriously, if you do, you may not enjoy it, but then again, that's up to your own preferences.
Hook (1991)
one of my Fav's
this film, is by far one of my favorite films. i was only 6 when it came out, and didn't see it til a few years later, but when i did, i loved it. and i grew up on the original peter pan movie too. some people have said that its a bad sequel to the peter pan movie. that its a horrible rendition of what peter pan would have done. what people don't realize is, its NOT a sequel. its a whole movie unto itself. while it would logically take place as a sequel would and would logically be a sequel...its not!
This film, yes, has flaws, but so do all films, and to say this one is riddled with them, is neither fair, nor true. some have said that Captain Hook, Dustin Hoffman that is, was too comical. for me, that's what gave the character so much appeal. I love Dustin Hoffman as an actor, and seeing him play a part like that only added to it. sure robin williams wasn't the best for the role of a peter pan, but as the movie was not meant to be serious and was meant to be as a "what if" film. he was perfect for this particular film.
as for tinkerbell. I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that tink grew up too, after peter pan left, she left neverland too, and grew up, and that's why she looks much older.
and Glenn Close was awesome as Gutlass the pirate in the Boo Box...great scene, and bob hoskins and smee!! oh man great cast...not all start...but great! not the best film ever and not Spielberg's best film. But one of my favorites, and will always be a great to me!
