The List (2023)
This definitely delivered the FUN
Is it a 10? No, it's not a 10. But I'm showing my support against the people who inexplicably rated it a 1. Realistically, it's a solid 7 and a helluva good time.
Basic plot is Abby Myers is about to get married and finds out her fiancé slept with a celebrity from his free pass list. With her life turned upside down, she heads out to LA with her best friend Chloe to track down and sleep with one of the five men on her own list.
The setup is actually super fun and relatable. It opens the doors to lots of celebrity name dropping and pop culture references which makes this super fun for anyone who reads US Weekly or follows gossip pages on social.
Dialogue is really clever. I found myself giggling at a lot of the exchanges and then cracking up at some of the big physical comedy moments. If anything I wanted to see even more if it. Halston carries the movie (she is basically in every scene, and I wasn't complaining). Great supporting cast led by Chrissie Fit who is hilarious, and Christian Navarro who is absolutely charming. The small characters also really bring the funny too.
Overall - a sweet and charming rom com with more laughs than average. I think it's a perfect date night movie!
Blue Beetle (2023)
Maybe the best DC Movie
It doesn't take much for me to call a DC movie the best one, to be brutally honest. But I actually felt like I was watching a Marvel movie while I was watching this one. And that's kind of the ultimate compliment.
The best thing about this movie was it's simplicity. I bought into the characters, I laughed the comedy, and the final outcome wasn't some huge chaotic CGI mess.
The heartfelt moments in the movie really clicked too. I was genuinely invested in the human aspect of the story and the struggles of the characters. All in all, it was a really good movie that I kind of wish came out 4 years ago before superhero movie fatigue had already set in.
Accepted (2006)
Need more movies like this
This reminded me of the days when movies used to be good without having to serve a million different agendas. Just a great and hilarious underdog movie, in the vein of Revenge of the Nerds or other National Lampoon's comedies from back in the day.
Jonah Hill is in his element as the risk-averse best friend. Justin Long carries the movie admirably as the lead. A whole bunch of memorable supporting characters to boot!
Of course the plot and ultimate resolution are far-fetched but who cares? I don't see a movie like this to see an authentic commentary of society. I'm here for the laughs and it definitely delivers on that front.
Gets better with time!
Mean Girls (2004)
Better Than I Expected, But I Didn't Expect Much
The movie was written by Tina Fey, so it obviously couldn't have been God-awful. All the cliches are present in this one, including the FINAL DESTINATION bus one. I have to admit though, the film had me laughing more than I thought I would. Most of the humor is absolutely crude, and that gags have all been seen before, but you won't hate yourself if you pay to see this one.
Cidade de Deus (2002)
Visceral Violence in a Beautifully Shot Film
This movie sticks with you long after you leave the theater. Some of the scenes are absolutely unforgettable because of the lurid violence that is displayed in a rather documentary-like format. The cinematogrpahy and editing are simply brilliant. The story, told in a non-linear fashion, hits you with a memorable scene and/or line at all the right times. This film sets the benchmark one notch higher for ultra-violent dramas in the spirit of Pulp Ficiton and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. The original part about this one (besides its rapid, jump-cut-style editing) is that all of the main characters are essentially children.
The Girl Next Door (2004)
RISKY BUSINESS clone, but a good choice of a movie to copy
At least you have to give the writers credit... they chose a damn good movie to model itself after (and when I say "model after" I basically mean "copy.") Sure there are a few changes: the prostitute is now a porn star and the pimp is now a porn producer, but this film screams RISKY BUSINESS the whole way through. I probably laughed harder and more frequently during this film, but RISKY BUSINESS didn't exactly resort to any cheap gags (i.e. horny high school boys at a porn convention is Las Vegas) to get its laughs. However, this movies definitely worth seeing for the beautiful Elisha Cuthbert (who should have had more screen time) alone. But you'll be pleasantly surprised to find some decent performances, plenty of laughs, and no gross-out humor in an overall fine comedy with some heart to boot.
