Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
COULDA, WOULDA, SHOULDA...
I'll start with the positives. A fantastic (wasted) cast, plenty to get excited about with this ensemble, unfortunately only 2 good parts. Lots of backstories, not enough time. Plenty of action and fast paced storyline. Plenty of unfortunate death and destruction without audience connection or care. The special effects seemed over the top at times and made it hard to feel immersed in the movies reality. The script was boring, underdeveloped and predictable at times. Most of the players seemed wooden or forced and I had no connection to them and did not care if they lived or died. In my mind this probably needed to be a 10 part tv series with all the stories and subplots.
Too much in too short of time equals too much information and not enough story connectivity. There is so much potential, but it needs a better storyteller or a longer format.
Leave the World Behind (2023)
SUSPENSEFUL AND KEEPS YOU GUESSING
As we fall further down the digital rabbit hole, what happens when it's no longer there to make us feel safe and secure? Who can you trust? Isolated and alone!
Sam Esmail loves to turn the knife in your mind's eye of imagination and doesn't disappoint with this one. It's a slow, suspenseful build up, with maybe some inspiration visually from the G. O. A. T. Alfred Hitchcock. A terrific cast that inspires paranoia and deception as the struggle through the unknown with no one but themselves to save the situation unfolding.
If you can live with the MacGuffin and enjoy the journey you won't be despondent and enjoy the plot twists and turns as they... Leave the World Behind.
Ahsoka (2023)
What a boring load of Doggy Doo doo!
You would want to hope this was written by AI and hope human writers can turn this around. I watched the whole thing and my opinion did not change after watching the initial 2 episodes. I thought it crap then and crap now. There is not one redeeming quality from any aspect. The story was bad... The acting was wooden or terrible... I did not care about any of the characters... I did not like any of the characters... If they all blew up on the same planet I would have said thank you. The writers should be sacked, the directors should definitely remove their name from the production if they want a future. Ahsoka is the worst Jedi creation so far. I'd rather watch my child do fart bubbles in the bath, but don't take my word it. Watch the first 2 episodes and hopefully you will be smarter than me and stop there. I wish I could use the force to make sure those writers never write again.
The Witcher: Blood Origin (2022)
I ALMOST DIDNT WATCH THIS BECAUSE OF ALL THE BAD REVIEWS
So i finally watched this after watching The Witcher S3... And I just want to thank all the people that gave it bad reviews because they made it sound so bad that I totally enjoyed it. It was just like a Dungeons & Dragons adventure. The acting was solid... The writing on occasion was cheesy, however still enjoyable. It soundly explained the origins of the witcher, the obelisks, chaos magic and the downfall of the elves. It starts slow like most series that have a lot of characters to introduce and interweave their stories. There seems to be too many reviewers who haven't watched it all or were comparing it to The Witcher... If you love fantasy you will love this... I gave it 6 stars and you might think that's too low, I hope you do.
The Harp in the South (1987)
Just a heartwarming story of a familys ups and downs on the brink of poverty
A fantastic book adapted for TV. The cast are superb, they draw you in through the good and bad of life on the brink of poverty. Through it all the one thing that keeps them moving forward is love, friendship and family. A lot of the cast have passed on now and Anne Phelan gives the performance of her career. I honestly never wanted it to end and it doesn't have to as a 2nd series was made called Poor Mans Orange.
So do yourself a favour and let Harp in the South transport you to another time. I bought this for my Granny 35 years ago and would watch it annually. Every time I watch it now I think of her.
Santa Claus the Serial Killer (2022)
Any true crime enthusiast will love this!
Firstly Mobeen the investigative journalist and his team have done a thorough and fantastic job. I happened upon this not realising i just watched a doco from more of a police point of view and it paled in comparison. Mobeen digs deep and connects the dots... pulls at the threads until the real truth is revealed. Its a Jekyll and Hyde story that preyed on the vulnerable and their secretive lives. While i was watching this the unseen truth outed all... this tragedy could have been stopped sooner... many lives could of been saved if only the world was a little bit kinder or more receptive to our life choices.
The other doco on this was informative and recommend watching that first, however this one tells the stories of the victims and how they were singled out, cornered and captured without any hope of escape because of their vulnerability.
Midnight Mass (2021)
Midnight Mass is thought provoking
Very cleverly written... Mike Flanagan is a superstar of supernatural horror. Let's hope he never runs out of ideas. The correlation of what we know and what we believe as the truth is tested and crafted and taken down a pathway of Mike's supernatural imaginings.
The Mauritanian (2021)
Gripping... Beautifully told story that blurs the divide between good and evil, just and injustice.
This film will challenge your own beliefs. The black and white will fade to grey. At some point in this film you will want to turn it off because of what you are witnessing is too hard to watch... but you must. Whether you believe in God or not you will think to yourself... We have got to be better or our children have no hope... Great direction... powerful performances... thought provoking story telling... Enjoy!
Three Identical Strangers (2018)
An amazing story of discovery that is birthed in the light of science and takes a turn towards the dark and cruel.
Have you ever wondered how your life would turn out if you had a different upbringing... different parents... different siblings... wealthier... more loving... dependable... reliable... more predictable and stable. 3 strangers living within a 100km radius... brothers separated at birth find each other and find out the cruel and heartless truth... that for the greater good? There will always be some collateral damage. ***A must see film.*** It just might change way you treat your own children.
Dublin Murders (2019)
A MIND TWISTING PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER
I just finished binge watching this. It starts off slow as the story unravels its characters. It seems like a pretty simple whodunnit, but its not. The characters are flawed and have dark pasts which interweave beautifully with the main plot and just when you think you have it all worked out.... another bread crumb appears and like Hansel and Gretel you cant help yourself... You follow. I wont give anything away, but i hope they do a season 2... Special appearance by one of my favourite Game of Thrones characters and the acting is superb
The Good Lord Bird (2020)
Ethan Hawke will win an Emmy for this performance.
Ethan Hawke plays Captain John Brown an abolitionist of slavery prior to the civil war and sometimes he can be a hit or miss with his performances, however this is definitely a hit in this beautiful blended story of truth and black comedy. Most of us only have the benefit of hindsight, but every now and again one of us has the foresight or maybe its just the courage and conviction to fight for what's righteous. The cast is superb, with great direction and cinematography. The script is witty and powerful and the story is... as they say history
Grey Gardens (1975)
They constantly live in the past where the future held so much promise and regret...
It's a sad ending to a life full of promise for this mother and daughter born to the socialite family bouvier (Jackie kennedy). Trapped by social confines of high society where the men were the breadwinners, however once the men left or died the money ran out and they were left without the tools to thrive and therefore reduced to poverty and dereliction and at the mercy of charitable friends and family... They constantly live in the past where the future held so much promise and regret and amongst this journey of rain or shine they hold to the manners and social etiquette of people who would gladly forget and despise what they've become... so together devoted they live a life of squalor and reminiscent of a lifestyle that has left them behind and desperately tried to forget them.
Ron Iddles: The Good Cop (2018)
Ron Iddles is a star... dogged and relentless in his pursuit of the truth
Ron Iddles is a star... dogged and relentless in his pursuit of the truth.
To be honest at first look and watching many true crime docos most of these crimes seemed impossible to solve due to time elapsed and limited evidence. Ron did a fantastic job with all these things taken into account. These days with DNA and digital footprints and smarter police processes you are facing a losing battle to escape justice, so without these advantages it all comes down to how hard you work on the ground and rattle cages, connect dots and maybe... just maybe you will find the key piece of the puzzle...
If I had a friend or a loved one whose case was unsolved and wanted justice in Australia... I'd be calling for Ron Iddles to be on the case.
I hope this series continues... Congratulations to Ron and his team.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
THIS IS NOT MY SORT OF THING... AND THEN IT WAS... ENJOY
Netflix'S The Queens Gambit is the story of an orphaned girl who is a child prodigy chess player in a male dominated sport in the 60's... it is her coming of age between career and love and where she fits in the world, while she is haunted by the past and the people that try to touch her heart through the burden of her dreams of success.
Anya Taylor - Joy's unique haunting looks and beautiful acting craft is just the beginning of great things to come
Spenser Confidential (2020)
Very ordinary...
Bad script.... Terrible directing... Dodgy story splicing... Awful comedy delivery... Is this the start of Marky Mark's decline... The 4 stars are too generous I know... A big fat raspberry.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Will never watch again unless I get ol' timers.
What a load of crap... It was like someone trying to do a tarantino movie and they've never seen one... The best bit was the last scene... The build up was a tremendous disappointment... A real slap in the face to Sergio Leone if that was his motivation....Will never watch again unless I get ol' timers.
The Outsiders (1983)
THE START OF MANY GREAT CAREERS...
I was a teenager when all these great young players were starting out and they gave me an escape to forget about my own problems. Everyone talks about racism but classism was just the same... As kids we know nothing of this.. We didn't care about it... It really shows how we are taught and forced to regress, judge and belittle people who just want what we all want love, understanding and acceptance... Stay Gold everyone
Canal Street (2018)
TERRIBLE WRITING AND DIRECTING
Had potential... But the acting and direction often seemed forced and clunky. Had some well known film and TV stars, however they were bound and gagged by the script. Sorry but it's a fail for me
Captive State (2019)
Captivating... once you invest.. but who do you trust... whose side are you on?
The Earth is taken over by Aliens... The Aliens have united the Earth through jobs, food, purpose and prosperity... or so the politicians tell you. Underneath lies the truth... Everyone is closely monitored by bio tags. Walk the line and go unnoticed... Stray from the path and face the secret police... Threaten the Aliens and they send out the hunters. A terrorist cell works hard to light a match... they've done it before but it wasn't enough... and the now the secret police are onto them. Will they succeed or will they fail or worse... get caught?
It starts slow with intrigue... We follow a boy who has plans to escape after the death of his parents and the sacrifice of his big brother, the hero of Wicker Park. He plans his escape covertly with a friend and girlfriend, however he is a person of interest closely watched by the head of the secret police who believes the boy will lead him to the terrorist cell.
Captive State... Ebbs and flows and does not disappoint... Will enjoy watching again!

Who Is America? (2018)
OMG I wanna laugh, cos its easy to think this a comedy with the material...
But it's not. It's a social commentary. Sacha is a mirror in which you will hope not to see your own reflective views... America is a sick and mentally unwell country that is nurtured by egotistical, capitalistic, power hungry and immoral people... I fear for the children who will have no say and no other worth but as a consumer... Fight back people of America... Watch this and listen to Sacha as he shows you the people and views that are making America sick.
Ready Player One (2018)
Wow.... very clever and beautifully told
I haven't read the book so i have no preconceptions. It's classic Spielberg, where the kids are the heroes through the power of imagination. The inspiration behind it has to be a well known children's classic only its set in the future...the story line is unmistakable.
I love references to pop culture and you will need to watch this again and again and still miss some.
The future is here and moving fast into possibilities that have no boundaries, however the message is clear and concise.... and you will have to watch the movie to find out...
