Bad Behaviour (1993)
Only Believable Acting is the
( acting was believable). That is really all I've to say of a film that was so lifeless and without point , I can only imagine a hardcore anglophile to take to it. I don't need to get into detail of a film that lacked it. What is suprising is that Stephen Rea was in this film.
The most forgettable film I've ever seen.
The Musketeer (2001)
Swashbuckling Buckles under the Film
seems a well intended tribute to the original film , but lacked depth in my view. not enough time for depth i suppose when you are in the air slicing about with a sword every 3 minutes. if you like bruce willis style car chases shootem up films, then you'll like this, ( unless you are find it too "cultural" for yourself) :) Myself, i found my mind wandering during it to such things as " I wonder if my socks will match if i look down" and other more fascinating thoughts.
The End of the Affair (1999)
a modern day classic as good as they get
i found this adaptation of the graham greene novel to have the depth and character study of the old black and white classics, yet with so many modern twists on the order in which the story is told. a must see of the choice of love for God, spouse and/or lover. done by touching on every basic human emotion that i can think of. extremely high quality, almost too good for myself. ;-) timeles classic
Citizen X (1995)
A most disturbing true subject matter made palatable
true story, of a serial killer in russia and the hunt by one man who must fight and tolerate the system to find the criminal. Stephen Rea again shows he has such a broad range of acting ability if you've seen his other films. i cannot stomach such topics as sick mass murderers and i was shocked when i saw what the film was about! Yet it showed such depth into the human psyche not only of the victim but of the man hunting him down who is driven to the brink in his search as he takes on not only a stalwart government system who make it nearly impossible for him to do his job, but he also takes on his own limits of emotional stabilty as he feels the responsibility morally i think feeling guilt and frustration with each new murder , until he finds one good man truly buck all holds barred and do what is right without fear.
captivating i did find this film . yet disturbing.
Feardotcom (2002)
A disappointment. typical in too many ways for myself
Even stephen rea could not save this film ( the reason i saw it in the first place was knowing his history of what i consider quality film).
interesting concept , yet all too typical did i find this film to be. too commercialised it seemed. stephen rea's american accent seemed impresive to myself as well as his acting which was not given much time. that is all i can say good of this film. i was so bored i was ready to go off my head!
On the Edge (2001)
Comedy on a most serious issue.Message:Treasure Life
i am tired of going into details on films . Cillian Murphy is captivating. The comedy is brilliant in timing and delivery and Stephen Rea plays it low profile in this film. Such constant and well done comedic content is based around young adults whon in despair do not wish to live and are institutionalised for it. (which is rare enough to find mental health assistance in ireland). the main character starts out wanting to end his life , commits sarcasm and jokes on all serious matters to hide his pain. He then through a series of life's common events, grows to appreciate life in a most touching way. as they say Tragedy Plus Time Equals Comedy" which seems to make a premise of this film yet for the character, his comedy stemming from pain grows to enlightenment. anyone who can understandably see the levels of mental depression in ireland that go without treatment can , i hope , relate to the issue at hand and appreciate the ability to laugh at life as well as treasure it. anyway this is how i interpret it, ( nothing worse than a critic, lol) ;-)
The Butcher Boy (1997)
The Most Complex and Well Done Film I've Seen
i cannot categorise this film.there is comedy , drama ,deep dark horrors of the mind and childlike innocense and that is but half of it all. it is the life of a boy affected by his environment ,family home, trying to enjoy boyhood innocense while struggling with his mind's demons as i see it. eammon owens, stephen rea fit together magically in the boy's film debut as though they 'd been close all their lives.' many things may be misunderstood of this film such as boyhood scenes with his best friend ( the only person in the world the lead character seems to be able to anchor to emotionally) as they elaborate in acting, the innocense and mischievousness( no idea how thats spelt), that is expected of the dream childhood. as well as sinead oconnor being commented on as playing the part of Our Lady. for me , it is clear, she is but portraying a figment of the lead character's imagination , whose interest in her seemed to manifest in the pictures and statues of our lady, hence sinead's lack of facial movements and the odd things she says. many words and the irish accent may be lost at times on some americans but the flow of the film is uneffected by a few words lost here and there they have told me. The brilliance of this film , actually endears you to a bully of a boy who commits the ultimate reprehensible act, because it follows his life and history of mental illness that lurks beneath the sweet faced , clever charmer.
i must have seen this film 30 times i kid you not.
