As if!
18 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers.

I don't care what you're doing, what con or trick you're up to.. exactly how many people would turn down sex with Alain Delon????? The premise that he is recovering and sex is not advised during his recovery..oh come on! Physically he's in great shape and the coma story is silly. The poor guy is so confused and doubtful but considering Senta Berger's beauty, wouldn't he ask for a little more detail on this "medically advised" celibacy? And the person they are using Alain to impersonate (unknowingly), considering his wealth, wouldn't friends or businessmen try to visit? I must have missed that part.

No one comes out of a 3 week coma looking like Alain Delon. Actually, no one comes out of a coma looking that healthy.

As far as the story, I understand that you are supposed to suspend belief at times and let the plot flow over you, but it was just too preposterous. Alain's character appears to be reasonably intelligent, would it take him that long to ask more questions? There's some fun to it, he looks cute and vulnerable at times and Berger's 60's clothes are terrific. Delon and Berger are a beautiful pair and both are talented. Too bad they couldn't get a better plot together.

Love Again (I) (2023)

Lifetime movie
19 May 2023
Jamie Fraser and a former Miss World. The only thing that separates this film from a Lifetime movie is the attractiveness of the main leads. Cliched, totally predictable. You knew what line was coming next, that's how predictable it is. The supporting characters brought nothing to the story. The cinematography was predictable as well with the rapid shifts in the New York skyline from day to night. Rom-com's are not stressful, so if you want a mindless movie with attractive lovers who live in magically lush New York city apartments, put this on your to-be-watched list. Oh, and Celine Dion? Yawn.

Delon will live forever
25 January 2023
This movie is so revered but I had to watch it a couple of times before I saw the overall appeal. I enjoy films with little dialogue to establish intention and direction of the plot, and this describes Le Samourai. But the plot was convoluted at times, then it would be clear, then I'd get confused again. I felt on the edge of my seat (especially in the subway scenes) as I really didn't know which way this would go. There's so much that Delon's character, Jef, does that I don't understand but I really wanted to understand. I still don't, not really.

This is Delon's film, period. I believe the director, Melville, knew what he wanted and knew Delon could do it. He owns this part. So handsome but almost like a sculpture. There were small moments of vulnerability, enough to wonder how you feel about him.

The filming and the muted colors and the pacing, I can see why filmmakers worship this film. It's definitely not for everyone. You can read the synopsis so you have an idea of the plot, but trust me, it will fool you.

As I write this, Delon has recently turned 87. I saw a comment that said he hasn't aged well. At 87 years old, exactly how would one expect him to look? He's had health problems, needs a cane, but his kids occasional post pics of him on social media. He's aged naturally and I respect that.

Jef Costello is clearly the part that will always come to mind when discussing Alain's career. Sadly a lot of these films are not as interesting to the new generation.

The love story was absurd.
31 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I gave it a 5 for the acting. But even though Hero fell in love with Kyra before he knew her history, this was a young man who grew up in a loving family, proudly never used drugs or got into trouble. Very believable.

But when he finds out she is deep in an organized crime group, being forced into prostitution to spare her criminal brother...is he really going to give up the life he's been working towards? Seriously? Put his family at risk? Not believable. And absurd.

Especially given the police assumption that young black men in his part of town are mostly criminals, why would he want to be anywhere near that chaos? I'm sorry for the character of Kyra being a forced sex worker, but I just don't find his "saving her" realistic. I would want him to have the good sense to say "sorry", and drive back home. That, of course, for me, means this whole story was nothing but a load of over-blown drama.

Camaraderie shines
22 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know how realistic the military action was. I liked the friendships and sacrifice to do the mission they were assigned. Maybe the friendships were a little cliche but I couldn't help being invested in the characters. There were weak parts and some of the shoot out scenes were confusing but if you like war dramas I think you will enjoy this. If you're old enough to remember Platoon there's a bit of an homage to a particular scene that I picked up on. I'm going to assume it was intentional, I don't think I'm that clever.

I'm writing this review 11 years after the film was made but there are a couple of actors I'm drawn to, Djimon Hounsou and Raphael Personnaz, and this is why I watched. Right now, in March 2022, the world is on the brink of war, so it is a little strange watching a war film. Keep that in mind.
