Los renglones torcidos de Dios (2022)
Worth a Watch
My opinion regarding the plot matches many others posted here; this is the Spanish version of Shutter Island. The plots already been done, so there's nothing new there. Where the questions are answered in Shutter Island they are not really resolved here. Don't expect to be thrilled with the ending.
The actors & actresses all do a great job. The performances are well performed & directed. I'm not familiar with any of them but was impressed with the decisions made by casting directors. The characters are believable, talented & well received.
The dialogue was well-written & never appeared forced. The conversations flowed with ease, quite realistic & precise, exactly the way normal & intelligent persons would speak. Also, no cheesy one liners or stupid humor thrown in serving no purpose.
The sets were well done. Visually stimulating, great costumes (as far as asylums go) and fantastic directing. I personally would have liked some more creative shots; close ups to add creepiness, long shots with crooked angles and a few more panoramic views to get a better mental visual of the grounds but the lack of these more creative types of cinematography didn't take away from the story, just a personal preference for longer psychological films.
The soundtrack was great! Did exactly what it's supposed to do & even had a song I looked up to buy later.
So overall score was a 7 of 10, based on the positive things stated above. Deducted 3 points because the story isn't new, the last twist is unnecessary & feels forced, some plot holes weren't wrapped up well and at the end I wasn't sure where the writers & directors wanted the audience to go. It wasn't thought provoking like some movies that leave unanswered questions...it seemed to be more the result of wanting to unnecessarily build up drama that was already there. Still, entertaining & worth a watch.
Pivoting (2022)
Fun & Light-hearted
I don't know what the average viewer/reviewer on here wanted but I got more than I expected. Most TV shows today have the same themes/plot lines & the same tired humor & little quips repeated constantly with only a different title & some different actors. This show, I feel, has been refreshingly fun & quick witted for the most part.
I love the three main characters: Amy, Jodie Sarah. They are each unique & quirky as are the supporting characters. The situations they encounter on the day to day bring to light how much humor can be found in the mundane details of daily living if you have the right friends.
My only complaint is it's a half hour show with 15-20 minutes of commercials...Networks are ridiculous with the advertisements as we just mute them or leave the room anyway. It'd make more sense to advertise with product placement in the show & allow the viewers more time to enjoy the show.
I hope it's renewed for a second season & I hate network television btw & generally only watch non-commercial programming that I stream on Discovery, Netflix or Vudu.
The Gilded Age (2022)
Witty & Refreshing - Spoiler Alert
I'm not sure why people seem to be so conflicted with the reviews here...
Doesn't have the same depth as Downton Abbey yet but the scope of players is much larger so I feel like that may be inhibiting the character development at the moment. I'm curious to see how the characters develop further into the season.
The language of the time was definitely different from the verbiage of the script, that being said I assume they're trying to capture multiple age groups as watchers. If the script was too accurate I feel it would lose younger audiences. The script, nonetheless, is witty & keeps a good pace. It moves quickly & if you're not paying attention important facts will be missed.
I like the cast, for the most part. I feel the actors may develop their characters more as the show progresses.
*spoiler alert* The cook stealing could completely be left out of the story so far. We get no background on this, no time to be conflicted about our feelings for the cook, or about her internal conflict regarding her choice of actions past & present. This adds nothing to our storyline & serves as a preconceived prejudice regarding immigrant workers.
Costumes are pretty impressive. Design is adequate, not mind blowing though.
Will update more as I'm only 3 episodes in.
H. H. Holmes: Original Evil (2018)
Complete & Utter Rubbish
The narrator speaks repeatedly of factual information vs fantasy, yet no links, books, articles, archives, or documents are ever shown to support the claims of what the narrator pushes as fact.
The film footage itself is quite obviously low budget. The fact the film is cheaply made is abundantly clear to any movie or documentary buff.
The music is horrific & doesn't match the story telling what so ever.
At the beginning of the film it almost feels like there is an underlying sympathy for H. H. Holmes and the tone & direction is unclear at best.
At the end, there's mention of the 27 people Holmes confessed to killing followed by another statement that some were still alive...yet no mention of how many. No proof or documentation. We're there 2 of the 27 still alive? Five? Ten? Because there was no additional information regarding this claim it seems silly it was even brought up in the first place but it was needed for the narrator to repeatedly claim Holmes a liar...multiple times, like that accusation is worse than the killing of innocent women & children. Anyone who watches serial killer documentaries knows murderers like to embellish their stories sometimes & saying this could've been the end of it & freed up time for showing us the film makers research & due diligence.
Very disappointing & I almost couldn't get through it. Painful. I can't get that time back.
A Haunting (2005)
Intense & Entertaining
I have watched just about every paranormal themed show out there. This one is well put together. The stories are sincere & not over exaggerated and there are no cheesy cheap scares or unnecessary screams for effect. The re-enactments are realistic as well. The people who experienced these hauntings are not the only ones who relay the details of the activity. Neighbors, family, friends, priests & others (such as psychics & paranormal investigators) all shed light and details regarding their encounters and observations also.
Very similar to Celebrity Ghost Stories & Paranormal Witness, but I feel, with an eerie authenticity that is frequently pretty unnerving. Also, there are guest appearances from the Warrens, Amy Allen and others known in paranormal circles.
