CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Skin in the Game (2013)
Music & Home
Why is this one of my favourite CSI episodes? Black Sabbath and a hometown reference: Conrad Ecklie and D. B. Russell are watching Sabbath in concert. Ecklie comments that he saw Black Sabbath - in Philly, at the Spectrum, in '78 - the very same concert I saw Black Sabbath in concert (first time I saw Van Halen live, too). The entire plot could have been ghastly, but who cares, the nostalgia alone rates the top episodes list for me.
The Fall (2013)
Riveting Psychological Thriller
One of the strongest, darkest psychological thrillers I've watched in a very long time. I was absolutely rapt as I watched the slow but steady character development during the early episodes. Gillian Anderson's character is a strong, intelligent, independent and determined woman, a highly skilled investigator, and unwilling to compromise or change. Her antagonist and suspect is also of strong intellect, highly obsessive, filled with hatred for, and a need to overpower women he sees as intellectual and status equals or of higher intellect and power. He is torn between his family which traps him and his obsession which controls him.
The programme is well worth watching. In fact, it is a must-watch.
Bancroft (2017)
Evil you love to hate, hate to love
The ghastly, depraved depths of narcissism, evil, corruption, and endless ambition of the lead character had me horrified and gobsmacked throughout the series. Throughout the episodes, I continuously reeled as the liturgy of her crimes and criminal acts grew. The writers have made her a character you hate and enjoy watching, waiting for her next evil deed to manifest. Add to that an Oedipal obsession with her son Joe, and you need to fight to toss your lunch, or heave your empty glass at her image at the screen. Add to that a draw that keeps you riveted, and it is a much watch, despite the predictability of certain storylines.
