Shôgun (2024)
One of the greatest achievements in tv history!
I can't stress enough how good this show is! It is intense, beautiful, and intriguing in every moment. I can't take my eyes off the screen when Shogun is on; the story the acting (Hiroyuki Sanada is mesmerizing, as always), the wardrobe, and set designs are beyond phenomenal. I never read the book but I'm going to now, and I fear it won't live up to the show (and I'm a reader so i can't even think of an example where the live-action version of a book was better than the book).
I hope the creative team does more after this limited series because they have an amazing team right now. If u only have the time or the bandwidth (mentally) for one serious show, make it this one. You won't be disappointed.
Boku no Daemon (2023)
Don't understand the high rating
I was intrigued by the art and was immediately turned off by the script. Every other word is "daemon", and everyone pronounces it "DAY-mahn"; it's irritatingly repetitive. I'm only 15 minutes in, and it feels like I've heard the word about 50 times. The main character doesn't know why people don't like the "DAY-mahns", despite living in this world, and every person he meets is disgusted and horrified. He hasn't asked why? As another reviewer said, I don't know who the target audience is here. It's annoyingly amateurish writing coupled with interesting (and graphic) art, as well as adult themes, make it really hard to decide which frame of mind i need to be in to enjoy it. But even if i could, I'm not sure i can listen to anymore "DAY-mahn" every 5 seconds.
The Changeling (2023)
What a waste of time and acting talent
The first episode or 2 hooks you but then u just hang on the hook. You are introduced to multiple interesting plot points but nothing comes of them because, as someone else said, the creators were banking on a second season. But they forgot they need to pay the audience to come back; the currency being an engaging and satisfying story where some things are answered. Ever.
I sat through the whole season, begrudgingly for the last half of it. The season finale might be one of the worst, most disappointing, finales I've ever watched. Literally nothing is answered, and not even one mystery is resolved. No questions are answered and only one new question was presented, and in the very last scene. For me, it wasn't enough to convince me to watch a second season, and I'm kinda miffed i stayed for the whole first season.
Pepsi, Where's My Jet? (2022)
Excellent storytelling!
This is a rare gem of a docuseries! I don't usually watch feel-good documentaries but I'm really glad i watched this. It's often hilarious, the soundtrack is fantastic and perfectly timed, the editing and directing are so well done you can actually feel how much they enjoyed making this documentary, and how much fun they were having with it! If you're looking for a lighthearted story-time that asks it's audience for nothing but a few hours, look no further. You will not be disappointed!
(And now I'm filling space because i have no more words about the docuseries. I was stretching that review already 😅)
Welcome to Wrexham (2022)
Never watched a football game, but this show is fantastic!
As someone who doesn't watch any sports except mma, this show is top-notch and I am now a Wrexham fan! The show does such an amazing job of showing us the heart of this team, and the heart of Wrexham. I think anybody that watches this show will have a new-found appreciation for the sport, the players, and even the die-hard fans. You can't help but celebrate the wins and grieve the losses, right along with them. The show is just so good!
Another thing I like about this show is they haven't only focused on the team. There are quite a few Wrexham fans that we see over and over, letting us experience the team through the eyes of people for whom football is more than just a fun game.
Highly recommended!
The Terminal List (2022)
Can't hardly see a thing
This show is ridiculously dark. Even when the scene is in broad daylight, outside, it's visually dark for no reason. Might be a good show but who knows since i can't see anything going on.
The Weekend Away (2022)
Characters making stupid decisions is getting old.
I turned it off after about 4 or 5 stupid decisions. Maybe halfway? Either way I can't take anymore stories that can only keep going if the characters continously make stupid decisions.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Really wanted to like it.
I think the show fails to make u care about anyone. I never read the books so I have no prior awareness of these characters but it feels very rushed. There's too much drama with no character building, so why should we care about their drama? Maybe it's a show just for wheel of time books fans...? Also the dialogue can be pretty boring; I find myself trying to stay awake. And I love fantasy/ sci-fi stuff.
Arcane: League of Legends (2021)
One of the best series. Ever.
I don't generally watch animated shows, and very few animated movies. But the art/animation itself grabbed me; it is unique and stunningly beautiful! The story, script, and voice acting is what holds you. This is not a "children's cartoon", by any definition of either word. I just finished the finale and I think I'm going to restart the whole thing immediately; that's how great it was.
Blush (2021)
Beautiful in every way.
I don't know how so much emotion and heart can be packed into such a tiny speck of time. At just 10 minutes long, it's got all the feels and then some. I will be thinking about it for days.
American Monster (2016)
Way too slow.
This show spends most of the time telling you about people's lives, from as early in their lives as possible. I don't care about the unrelated sweet sixteen party that happened 20 years before the crime.
Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel (2021)
Spends 4 hours tossing red herrings just to confirm what u already thought.
The questions and assumptions I had, just from episode 1, were first "proved" wrong (or not being addressed at all) through the second and third episode. After sitting through 4 whole episodes they confirm what I thought and address the very pertinent questions that were glaringly missing from the dialogue. Waste of time.
Sweet Girl (2021)
Script holes
**very minor spoiler by quoting part of the script in the first few minutes of movie**
In the first 10 minutes Jason momoa calls a talk show to say "my wife is dying in a hospital because you pulled spero off the market." The response to this from another person on the show: "paying competitors to shelve generic brands of drugs? That is immoral, Mr keely."
Either they edited out part of the scene or momoa didn't deliver the line correctly, because those 2 lines together don't make any sense. He hadn't even said anything about paying off competitors yet. Why didn't they do a retake?
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (2018)
Absolutely awful.
I have never had any interest in playing games with others. I enjoy the stories by myself. COD devs have decided they only want money from people that play multi-player (dumbest decision I have ever heard of) because they completely scrapped the solo campaign storyline in favor of a million ways to get multi-players to "pay to win" (microtransactions). Really really stupid decisions = less people giving you money.
Everything's Gonna Be Okay (2020)
Fantastic!
This show is hilarious and touching in equal measure. The characters are great and their relationships with each other are adorable. I love this show!
Remnant: From the Ashes (2019)
I gave it a try. I was disappointed.
Graphics are pretty good, nothing special. Gameplay is not great. Movement in the game is also not great. And there's no way to know if a bad guy is coming up behind you (while fighting other bad guys) until they hit you.
9-1-1 (2018)
Used to like it more than I do now.
Very minor spoiler below.
I'm really starting to dislike the attempts at humor when a character calls 911. A chef gets impaled by high pressure nitrous whipped cream thing, and the 911 caller says "my chef's been creamed!". That is some dumb writing. Is it a realistic show or is it a comedy show? I know they have some serious problems with the unprofessionalism portrayed by the first responders in the show, but there is no reality where a person is panicking and calling 911 and makes a joke to the 911 operator about the death they just witnessed.
Hollow Knight (2017)
Ok.
It's your standard plarformer. It looks great as all games do now. It's annoying to wander around a maze, encountering things u can't do, losing lives from things u can't see quick enough to avoid, every room u walk into respawns all enemies, if u lose all your lives all your money is gone that you've been saving to try to find your way back out of the maze to purchase something that will help you get through the maze. Tip for game makers: the player needs incentive to keep playing. If all u get to do is lose and get lost in a maze, where's the fun?
Britannia (2017)
Surprisingly great!
I don't know a lot about this time and place in history so it doesn't bother me that it's, apparently, not historically accurate.
I didn't expect to like this so much! It's got huge production value, fantastic actors, a great story that is very well paced, it can be quite humorous at times, and quite gory! I love it! Eagerly awaiting the second season!
Makes me wonder if I need to take a look at other shows that are on EPIX, if this is the quality they're offering!
The Vow (2020)
Tooooo looooonnnngggg.....
Other than being gratuitously long, this is a really great documentary. 9 episodes is way too long for a documentary that u can look up how it ends, because it already happened. I keep fast forwarding through the unneeded parts of the story. As someone else said, this could have been feature length, or maybe 3 episodes.
Raised by Wolves (2020)
One of the best shows I've ever seen!
This is a top-notch scifi series! It's insanely original, unpredictable, and I still don't know where they're going with the overall story. I love it! Usually by now there's a familiar story-arc that starts to appear, but i still have no clue what's going to happen. It's weird and amazing! All the characters are well fleshed out, the story isn't rushed yet it manages to be exciting anyway. Highly recommended!
Ghost of Tsushima (2020)
Excellent game if u love action-adventure!
I loved this game! Coming from an avid action- adventure fan it's nothing new in the way its played (side quests, campaign missions, collecting things, leveling up things, etc.) but still somehow feels fresh. It is pretty unique in fighting style as far as I know tho I've not played all the games out there. This is one of the only games I've played that doesn't feel pointless to keep doing things after completing the last campaign mission. Highly recommended!
The Hunt (2020)
Gleefully violent in the best way!
I went into this thinking it wouldn't be that great because the ratings aren't great. It exceeded my expectations by a mile! It's a bloody (literal and British) hilarious dark comedy for people with a sense of humor about the extreme ends of the 2 major political parties (in the US) and violence. I don't know why it got such mediocre reviews; the movie is not trying make an important statement about anything, as far as I can tell. I definitely recommend it if you're just looking for something funny and violent. And Betty Gilpin is fantastic (as always)!
AJ and the Queen (2020)
Was not expecting to love this so much!
I knew i was going to like this show but i LOVE it. It's got so much heart and a whole lotta laughs. The chemistry between Ruby and AJ is just perfect! The acting is on point! This is just a really great series and i highly recommend it.
Dublin Murders (2019)
so disappointed.
Too many mysteries and not enough answers to justify even introducing said mysteries. By the end it felt like a mash-up of random mysterious plot points that could each have been the sole plot of a whole show, but you only get answers to one of the many questions this show presents.
great acting, great script, thats about it. kinda wish i hadn't spent every week waiting to watch it.
