They went full nostalgia
27 February 2023
I didn't watch the first two seasons. Only the pilot episode and I was out. I guess I'm one of those "not-my-Trek" types not loving all the new Star Trek stuff. I was content just watching Angry Joe reviews.

Season 3 brought me back! But they know what they're doing. They hit you with the nostalgia from the beginning. The first two episodes have the same feel as the original Star Trek movies where the characters know they're old and joke about it, but there's still the awe of being in space that Star Trek always provided, the camaraderie of the actors, and the fantastic Jerry Goldsmith music from "First Contact"!!

And not to say nostalgia is the only thing it has going for it. The undercover character and her drug abuse issues is compelling enough. I know she had a fall from grace and it's always cathartic to watch a character recover. If she does so with the help of a certain beloved Klignon, even better!

The seedy city stuff may not feel like Trek, but, realistically, places like this would exist. So watching people smoking death sticks in a place that looks like a back alley on Coruscant or a main street off Blade Runner is okay with me.

And Seven of Nine is there to remind us how she stole the show in Star Trek Voyager. I know she was in an other season, but I don't plan to watch those. She's perfect here as the uncomfortable first officer.

I'm just glad this season has the feeling of being made by people who appreciate Star Trek and not by people who hate it, don't get it, or want to deconstruct it. Time will tell, though.

I may change my rating as the series continues, but so far, it's hitting the right notes. Nostalgia-wise, at least.

Good Lord, what a GREAT show this was
20 January 2022
Just binge-watched this decades-old series for the first time and couldn't stop watching. It's like everything I love about "Frasier" and "Seinfeld" is all here in this one delicious show with loveable, incorrigible characters, amusing plotlines, hilarious punchlines. It's like they took the best aspects of romantic screwball comedies, balanced it with warmth and mean-spirited humor, and stretched it out through 11 wonderful seasons.

Nominated for Golden Globes???

And well-deserved!

Although I have mixed feelings about the Marvel / Disney TV shows overall, I was onboard with WandaVision and the performances of Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany (not to mention the creativity of the writers) really made that show special.

Fun show, heartfelt performances.

Hawkeye (2021)

Okay for kids
15 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
As the show went on, I realized I was probably not the audience for it. It's like one of those old CW comic book shows.

The only thing I really liked about it was pretty purple colors of the first couple episodes and all the X-mas decorations in time for X-mas.

But...story is not that interesting. Hawkeye seems neutered (in an ugly X-Mas sweater no less). Kate is mildly amusing. As usual with these Disney Marvel Tv shows, there's no BIG BAD GUY that that can set the tone and pace and put us in suspense. The Jack subplot doesn't seem to be going anywhere. The LARPers? Twice? Really? Echo and now Yelena? Mildly amusing again.

Kingpin should've been in the first episode as the Big Bad. Instead we get comical Tracksuits and a goofy murder mystery.

If the kids love this, then great! As an adult Marvel fan, not impressed.

Fun little movie about building a house
25 July 2021
When I saw this movie ten years ago, I thought it was bland and forgettable.

I watched it again now that I've been house-hunting, and I loved it. Situations we can relate to today. Nice little commentaries about New York and about commercialism. No huge drama, just the difficulties and mishaps of getting a dream house built.

It's like one of those 40s or 50s documentaries with the chipper music and the pleasant but authoritative voice over (provided by Melvyn Douglas playing the lawyer).

It only stands out because you have two powerhouse Golden Age actors like Cary Grant--debonair goofball--and Myrna Loy and those eyes of hers...

Just don't expect a screwball comedy on the same level as "Bringing up Baby".
