Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Only popcorn good
After seeing the amazing reviews for Guardians of the Galaxy I was expecting a movie that would completely blow my mind. I went in with high expectations and left feeling less than impressed. Visuals and music were great, but everything else was only so so at best. Each character lacked development, especially the main villain, the jokes weren't clever (amusing but not clever), action was nothing new, the plot was predictable, and the ending was all so cheesy. I can see why the general audience would like it because it seems designed to cater to a wide variety of audiences, the Marvel method as it were. I'm not picking at it because it's Marvel, in fact I think Days of Future Past deserved much more critical acclaim than Guardians did. All I can say is, if you go see it or buy it, you will have a good time; does it deserve to be on IMDb 250? Probably not.
Arrow (2012)
Best live action comic book show ever!
During the first season I'll admit I found it rather unimpressive and strangely off putting to have a superhero kill off bad people. I made the right decision to stick with the show because it truly is one of the most brilliant comic book inspired shows ever. Despite not having superpowers like Clark Kent in Smallville, the action in Arrow is much more entertaining and riveting. The show has a pretty serious and dark feel to it, and keeps you guessing with every scene. The villains are surprisingly well developed as well. This show touches upon some romantic elements but doesn't make it a central theme. If you want true unadulterated superhero action and story this is the show for you. If you want to get into a new show, you can't go wrong with this one.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)
An Unexpected Journey indeed
I have read the book and was expecting a very similar experience and storyline as the book was however they seemed to have taken it another direction. Although the Hobbit is supposed to center around Bilbo Baggins, this movie really attempts to connect itself with the LOTR series, making this a real prequel. There were a lot of parts that were added and changed but I can understand why it had to be done, the Hobbit did not have as many defining moments as did LOTR. Overall I enjoyed the film, it was like a treat for the fans, as a fan myself I felt giddy when I saw the reappearance of Frodo, and Gollum. LOTR will still be much more epic, but the Hobbit holds its own.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
Greatest movie of all time
Some people are a bit hesitant to watch this movie due to the length of it and the tendency for the first movie to drag on a bit, but even if you found the first 2 movies to be a bit boring for your taste you should by no means hesitate to watch this movie. The Return of the King is the most beautifully made movie, every piece of the movie from the story, to the action, to the visual effects, to the acting is just absolutely stunning. I have personally been looking for movies that can provide the same experience that this movie provides, and there is clearly no match. The movie concludes the Lord of the Rings series showing everyone's final push to end the reign of Sauron. The movie starts off with the story of how Gollum came to be which if you ask me has been long overdue but a great addition. The movie then continues to show the struggle Frodo is having bearing the influence of the ring, and Sam continues to show his support for Frodo despite Gollum's attempts to undermine Sam and trick Frodo. The rest of the cast find out that Sauron has plans to destroy Gondor and each contribute a role to stop Sauron's army. The movie continues to drag you to the edge of your seat, when i first saw it I wished that the movie wouldn't end but when it did it left a satisfying bittersweet feeling for those who followed Frodo from the Shire in the beginning. If you haven't watched it put it on your list you won't regret it.
Unleashed (2005)
A refreshing hybrid of excellent story, excellent acting, and great action
When i chose to watch this movie i had only the action in mind, i am never really impressed with Jet Li's acting, but i love his fighting, so when i chose this movie i did not expect much for a variety of reasons, for one i thought that having a human being used as a dog was a bizarre idea and the fact that this movie isn't so popular seemed to confirm that idea for me but once i watched this movie from start to finish i couldn't help but stare at the screen. The story in itself is so compelling and brings a sort of controversy in the area of child development and the debate of nature vs. nurture. The fact that Jet Li's character has been raised in such a hostile environment and somehow was able to reach a more sensitive and innocent side when he spent time with morgan freeman is such a touching element to such a movie. Morgan Freeman is brilliant as always and Jet Li's acting and emotion in this movie was spot on. The action was brutal and yet still had the finesse that Jet Li brings to all of his fighting scenes. This movie allows guys to reach an emotional side without feeling emasculated. Take out the action then it would be a great drama movie, take away the drama then it would make a great action movie, lucky for us movie lovers this was a combination of the two. I was entertained throughout the entire movie, i loved it, if you haven't watched it then you should.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 (2010)
Might have been better if i didn't read the book
As far as cinematic performance goes it wasn't so bad, however i can't say too much about it because i feel the bias of me being such a huge fan of the book might influence my review. However this review is meant for those hardcore harry potter fans. I was very disappointed throughout the whole movie, not that the movie was poorly done or anything, but the one thing i felt was the biggest flaw in the movie was they kind of rushed everything and they kind of left some important parts to the movie, not just in terms of story line but emotional depth that you feel when you read the book but of course this could be my bias talking. I have heard some people who haven't read the book say this movie was fantastic so i would say that the movie does somewhat compensate for the rushed story line with a fantastic movie yet i was still not completely satisfied. I understand the previous movies were made before the 7th book was even published so its difficult for the writers and producers to get in the mind of J.K rowling and put in every detail that will be important later yet i felt that those details that got left out and that were squeezed into the 7th movie kind of made it seem like in order for it to be included they had to take out some stuff. For instance they barely introduced Bill, which should have been done in the 4th movie, and they barely introduce mundungus which should have been done during the 5th movie, so we kind of lose essence what kind of character bill and mundungus are, and i feel this detail is what made the wedding in the movie seem so unimportant which was actually an important detail in the book because the wedding did a lot of stuff for the story, by having krum it introduces Ron's jealousy in the story, and also provides detail about gregorovitch the wandmaker, and shows the controversy of the mark on luna's dad's necklace and also contributes to harry's curiosity to dumbledore's life. also in the beginning scene when they're transporting harry they made hedwig dying as a giveaway to the real harry instead of the explleriamus charm in the book which is more symbolic. anyways thats just some of the things that i felt shouldn't have been changed, there are a lot more. So my advice is if you read the book don't expect this movie to match your expectations because its understandable that they have to consider the audience that doesn't read the book, but overall i guess this movie was pretty good.
