Underworld (2003)
Vampires: evil or just really constipated?
Pros: - Pretty decent cinematography; there are a few key shots that make this movie almost worth seeing - Excellent makeup jobs; the director for this movie was all about staying away from CG as much as possible, so some very stunning makeup jobs were done- most impressive of all was Viktor's during his regeneration - I really liked the costume design for the vampires- very cool - The story was interesting
Cons: - Number one: 90% of the actors in this movie were god awful; Shane Brolly was the worst- in every scene he look horribly constipated; I guess a diet of blood isn't really high in fiber but that's not an excuse for having a butt-ugly grimace in every single scene; just about everyone in this movie over acted their part; Kate Beckinsale and Michael Sheen are the only 2 that I feel were decent in this movie - The werewolfs looked stupid; if you are going to move away from CG, let's make some costumes that have more than just facial movements; every werewolf walked as if it were wearing a girdle under its fur; oh, and the whole running on the wall thing doesn't work in a world where there is gravity- I guess everyone is also part spider
Overall: As I said before, there are a few key shots in this movie that are excellent. The sad thing is you see most of them in the trailer.
Spy Kids 3: Game Over (2003)
Game Over indeed
I was bored the other night and thought to myself, "I have never seen a 3D movie before and all the hype they are giving to Spy Kids 3D, I should go check it out." I bought my ticket not expecting a good plot but at least expecting decent special effect and a 3 Dimensional experience.
The special effects were crappy- The movie would have been better if they either had just shown the green screen instead of the virtual world or if the grandfather had died. I think the producer's objective was to dig into the Hollywood Actor Welfare Hat and pull out the names of several really poor actors.
Defining moment: when the theater had to call an ambulance for me after I slobbered onto the floor from a seizure induced by probably some of the crappiest, blurriest special effects I have ever seen.
One last thing- these people that make movies for kids can't use their audience as an excuse for stupid crap like this. Anyone who has seen Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke knows that there is talent and creativity our there that can be used to make movies for children.
Tool: Salival (2000)
Perfect
I am a big fan of the style that Tool has employed in their music videos. The stop motion has progressively evolved and grown more creative with each new album. This along with the awesome cinematography and special effects makes for a good medium for their music. Of course, there is also the way that the visual art ties very closely into the lyrical and musical depth.
These are wrapped up in a very presentable package and, with the DVD, a very sweet interface.
