The Village (2004)
Please don't waste 2 hours of your life on this one
I liked sixth sense - and because of this one good movie m. night is an egomaniacal bastard with, unfortunately, precisely zero reason to be. every movie hes made since has followed the same formula in an increasingly unsuccessful way and THE VILLAGE is no exception. M Night can't write. Period. He is a good director with a talent for building suspense but all his films exist solely for his "kicker twist" that just get more and more lame. This movie has little or no story- the fault of poor writing, but features stellar actors that do a great job. Too bad its not enough to save this movie from itself. I saw The Village not expecting a whole lot and guess what - it lived up to that expectation.
The Butterfly Effect (2004)
Haunting, Tragic, but ultimately Brilliant
I have seen this movie just a few hours ago and i have to say that it is brilliantly conceived. Definately not a feel good film, but rather dark and tragic in every sense of the word. Yes the performances were above and beyond etc etc... and it helped, but the film itself is an emotionally provacative piece of work that had me feeling sad, morose and depressed. Nonetheless i think that this makes it a very powerful film to evoke such strong feelings while watching it. It is, for lack of a better term, very human. On a different note there were also many complexities to do with chaos theory inderlying the raw emotional turmoil that the characters endure such as time travel, alternate universes and such, but rather than rely on these interesting ideas and theories to carry the movie, it is instead simply used as a background setting for an incredible story. I loved it for what it is, but not something you see to be entertained. See this movie but don't take your family.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Exactly how i would have done it
I thought it was if nothing else, then a very well done film. With little to go on except for a famous Disneyland ride, the script worked well with no lack of witticisms and worked in features of the ride into the film for a sort of nostalgic effect of my childhood memories. I thought the casting was perfect, especially johnny depp and keira knightley (yumyum). a great adventure movie without shoddy special effects, pirates of the carribean is officially in my good books and as far as im concerned the best pirate movie since (ironically) disney's last attempt well before my time (you know, the one with long john silver). I recommend it to anyone and everyone that loves entertainment and hates dissapointment.
