The American Society of Magical Negroes (2024)
A must watch
This movie was brilliant. The writing and the performances. All of it.
Everyone should see it asap.
I thought the movie was going to be fun fluff in the guise of commentary; however i found myself confronted with a story that made me think and feel and reflect.
Justice smith is top tier as a comedic, romantic and dramatic lead. I hadn't expected this amount of range from him, but thats on me.
As a lover of movies and the lessons they can teach us; i loved this take on a historic trope in films. I appreciate this movie among so many others that have challenged me to continue learning and growing.
Barbie (2023)
The most magical pink fever dream
I had no idea what to expect, but the trailers made me smile. Every after the seeing the trailers the movie was so much more weird and wonderful and pink than I'd even imagined. I laughed so hard. There is also a sweet message about the pressures of life and society and gender roles without being preachy. It feels like a message of kindness to ourselves and to others. I now know that I am Kenough.
The writing of this film was brilliant. It could have been a strange and tacky film; but instead it reminded us of the endless possibilities of stories and imaginations. The music, costumes, sets and actors all were the perfect pink sprinkles on top.
Velma (2023)
If you know the premise of this show it's fun
If you know the premise of this show, it's a solid fun time. I enjoy it so far and it appeals to my nostalgia while also being its own thing. I want more shows like this, low stakes but entertaining. This show takes a familiar setting, characters we all grew up with, and provided a new twist. Much like "Harley Quinn", "Wednesday", "smallville", "Sabrina", or "Riverdale", we are taken to a place we thought we knew and reintroduced through a new and creative lens. Characters are recognizable but reimagined. This show feels like it's grown up just like the fans of the original. Velma is a thoroughly good time.
Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
Genetic British accent
Fun to watch dinosaurs chase people. Plot is ridiculous and acting seems like the first take every time. But I still found myself entertained to the very end.
Bad Hair (2020)
Campy Fun that still makes a point
This movie was fun from beginning to end with an amazing cast. Seriously, everyone I love was in this movie! My only complaint was that Nicole Byer was barely in it lol.
On top of the fun story, music, and concept; the Underlying message about pressures put on women's beauty, ESPECIALLY black women, was really impact if you without being preachy.
This was a romp that I'll recommend to everyone!
Mrs. America (2020)
What an amazing show. In every way.
Mrs. America is quite possibly the most moving well written show I've ever seen. I just finished the last episode.
The foundation of why this show is great is the writing. But the cinematography and acting round out the excellence.
If you haven't watched it yet, you're missing out.
