The Book of Eli (2010)
Good movie, and personal beliefs didn't make that decision for me.
I'm going to stray away from spoilers but I think its pretty obvious this movie has something to do with god. I knew after seeing the book of eli there would be a lot people who felt pure hatred towards it just for that reason. Why? Who cares if it was about god, it's just a movie. Casting it away on personal beliefs is just pure ignorance. I'm amused at the people who use words like "absurd" and "ridiculous" to explain how unbelievable the storyline turned out to be. I bet half of these people(at least) when on to write positive reviews about spiderman, superman, batman and whatever else. Oh sure, because its completely plausible for peter parker to swing from buildings with spider webs he shoots from his wrists. I guess I cant enjoy movies that are based on comics because I don't believe in superheroes. Come on people, stop being ridiculous. IT'S JUST A MOVIE. So stop being silly, k?
Paranoid Park (2007)
Why such a high rating?
Let me start off by saying I didn't hate this movie. I found it interesting but that's as far as it went. Two major flaws for this movie was the acting and dialogue, which surprised me because so many other reviews suggested otherwise. I don't remember names but two of the worst actors were our main characters girlfriend, and the other girl he hung out with. It was one of those cases where they were self conscious of the camera, they both just seemed awkward and out of place. This didn't go for just those two though, almost everyone in the movie had at least one moment like this (with maybe an exception for the mom and dad). The dialogue in some parts was just terrible. There were definitely times where I laughed during a particular scene that wasn't meant to be funny. I don't know why this movie has received such high praise. My guess would be because its "Artsy". "Artsy", I hate the word. Its gets slapped on movies that would normally be deemed stupid/bad because it has "taste". Well, taste is like opinions, everyone's is different and some better then others. Personally, I think some experimental movies should just be left as experiments. I would not recommend this movie.
Rampage (2009)
Surprised
This movie was way better then what I thought it was gonna be. I was expecting another low budget, cheesy action film with bad acting. (i came upon it on my xbox through netflix and lets face it, almost all the xbox netflix movies suck) It was actually really good. The kid who played the shooter was perfect for the part. He always maintained this calmness through the entire movie (which was quite funny at times) which really fit the psychopath persona. He was also pretty clever in how he executed his plan. I noticed some people saying in other reviews that the movie didn't portray strong enough reasons for his killing spree. That amused me some because I don't really think a psychopath capable and willing of mass murder needs any reason at all. What does his reasons matter? Would some "good" rationalizations justify his killing spree? I digress. I highly recommend this movie so if your interested just give it a go.
Dorian Gray (2009)
Don't compare it to the book
I haven't read the book but have read many reviews on how the movie suffered in comparison. Even if the book was that much better then the film doesn't mean that the film itself wasn't good. It simply means the book was better which is usually the case for any movie inspired by a good novel. Its important to notice that films like these are always based on something else. Whether fictional or true the keyword is "based". This means the movie can be whatever the hell they want it to be as long as the ending result is coherent with the true/fictional story. So, to put it bluntly, the picture looked good, the acting was up to par, and the story was compelling. What more do you need to enjoy a movie.
Fong juk (2006)
wow
This movie soared above my expectations. After reading a review I was expecting a mediocre story with good action scenes. Well, I was definitely wrong about one thing. The story was great and very heartfelt by the end of the movie. The action scenes glorify gun fights making them look really cool. There were certain scenes that tricked me into thinking gun fights were fun and something I should be apart of. I snapped back to reality of course. Let me put it this way, if you can stream netflix then you can watch this movie right now. So if you can stream netflix my question is this. Why are you still reading this review instead of watching this amazing movie?
Daybreakers (2009)
new idea, same old vampire movie
Not much to be said about this movie. I watched it with the belief that it was going to be different then all the other vampire movies. Different, what ever that means. The idea was good but they didn't entertain this idea enough. The movie kind of felt like this, yea yea the whole world is filled with vampires who are desperately looking for a blood substitute, but never mind that, instead watch these humans search for a cure. With that set aside, the movie itself was also rather cheesy. All the vampire clichés are here, the strange eyes, the hissing, the exaggerated facial expressions. Not to mention the so called "scary" parts of the movie. This movie relies on the famous, everything seems to be going good, nothings out of place, then "wham!" out of nowhere something crazy happens that makes you jump out of your seat. The movie pretty much lost me after a vampires head exploded for no explainable reason. Well, I suppose maybe it could be explained but I wont spoil anything from the movie. Lets just say it the left the question "did his head really have to explode?". I wouldn't recommend this movie but if your a die hard fan of the vampire movie genre then you will probably like this.
Moon (2009)
It was OK
This movie had way more potential then it lived up to but it was still entertaining to watch. The biggest problem i had with movie is that you figure out the whole scheme less then halfway through it. This kind of made watching the rest of the movie pointless because you already knew everything that was going on. If they would have made the whole plot/story line a little more mysterious and thrilling, it would have got a better rating from me. i don't have much else to say but there is a ten line minimum for posting reviews so i am going to continually type about this until i hit the ten line mark but i cant think of how else to run on this sentence, oh wait, just hit 10 lines.
The Boondock Saints (1999)
Why such opposition
I just watched this movie for the first time and while it was not anything spectacular i found it to be entertaining. Yes almost all the action scenes were completely outrageous and unrealistic but that is hardly something to be appalled at. How many times did you say "Oh Come on!" when watching John McClain kill bad guy after bad guy non stop with one gun and limited ammo, or Rambo slaying entire armies single handed, and how about Dutch being the only one of many to kill the predator with makeshift weapons while covered in mud. What pure action film isn't ridiculous and unbelievable. What surprises me is the hate offered by people who disliked the movie. Take the people who write the good reviews. They say what they thought of the movie and for the most part leave it at that. But the people who write the bad reviews not only trash the movie but deem anyone who liked it childish or just plain idiots. Personally i find it childish and idiotic that these are things such people are so bothered with. Look, its by no means a great movie. But if you want to see some Irish boys defy all odds and kill endless hoards of gangsters while saying the lords prayer, then this movie is for you.
Frozen (2010)
Decent movie
Frozen will not win any awards but i would not throw it in the trash after watching it, had i actually purchased it (netflix). while some of the options these kids decide to take are questionable, they have to be made to maintain the movie. To the people saying they could of made a makeshift rope out of clothing and climbed down from the lift. Yes this was possible but also unlikely to work. Trying to tie a decent knot with thick winter jackets and sweaters in a crowded and confined space (ski chair) would be difficult for even an experienced sailor. Also, these pieces of clothing would have to be twisted up first (as if wringing water from a wet shirt) to improve the strength of this makeshift rope which would dramatically reduce its length. There would still be a great chance of breaking ones leg/legs. Furthermore, what if they did make the rope and it worked? Well that's just great, twenty minutes in and they devise an escape plan and the credits are rolling. Oh sure, that would have been brilliant. Same thing goes for the sharp cable and wolves. Had they not proved to be a problem, the movie would have been over before you finished your popcorn. If the idea of 3 people being stuck on a chair lift doesn't interest you then don't watch it. If it does then you will probably enjoy it.
