Koyaanisqatsi (1982)
Awesome movie without talks
This strange title hide a movie which critics the world of today, who is evolve constantly but since the human is living on this planet, the pollution is common.
"Koyaanisqatsi" is an awesome movie for cinema lover peoples because it contains fabulous images and a wonderful music. This movie make us think about the actions of the human on the environment. After watched this movie, i realize the earth changed a lot since the human use it. But, i think some shots in this movie are a bit slow.
Directed by an unknown people with the name of Godfrey Reggio, formerly monk, this movie will stays in my mind and i don't will hesitate to watch it again.
A must see movie.
Weekend (2011)
Different homosexual movie, not for everybody.
The good British movies are pretty rare these days, especially about homosexual theme. I have already saw movies about this theme but i inform you this one is pretty different because some dialogs can shock some peoples. There are some scenes where the protagonists talk about what they did in their sexual life and many details are given.
The story is different from what we rare used to see because it's not about someone who is ashamed of being homosexual, but a special relationship between two homosexual boys. There is not a lot of musics except the few you can hear at the night-club at the beginning and the one during the credits. I blame few boring scenes though.
Wrong (2012)
Where is my dog?
I've seen the two other movies of Quentin Dupieux, "Steak" and "Rubber". A crazy thing with him it's i didn't like at all "Steak" but i really enjoyed "Rubber". I wasn't sure to go to cinema for watch "Wrong" because the critics had different opinions. After few days i've seen reviews of french peoples and they pretty liked so i watched it.
Quentin Dupieux is famous for direct movies who are different from what we are used to see, for example the clock radio of the main character goes to 7.59am to 7.60am. I mostly liked the movie the movie it's metaphorical side and it's critical scenes of the society. The director is famous for his career in electronic music with the name of "Mr. Oizo". He is the composer of his own films. The music is correct in "Wrong" but i prefer the soundtrack of "Rubber".
For the negative points, i think the story wasn't really interesting and there are many scenes where i thought it was over. There are also many boring moments and the movie becomes "long" even if it's only one hour and half.
When i watched the trailer of this film, i thought it was going to be as empty as "Steak" but no, Dupieux succeeded to do a correct movie and outside our imagination.
Les amours imaginaires (2010)
Good love story.
A friend made me discover this director few months ago. It's important to know as he is only 23 and he already directed three movies. I always wanted to watch at least one of his films and i decided to start with "Heartbeats".
I didn't expect much about this film but i was surprised about the making of the film. I appreciated the effects, like the slow-motion. The music is a nice choice, i mostly noticed "Bang Bang" sang by Dalida and the musics of Johann Sebastian Bach. The actors play very well and Xavier Dolan, the director, also play in his movie and has a main role.
It's a Quebec's movie and the actors speak with an accent, it's a bit hard to understand few words as a french speaker. I was a bit bored when watching few scenes, but that's not a big problem in the movie.
A good movie by Xavier Dolan, i think i will watch his others movies.
The Major and the Minor (1942)
Good comedy movie by Wilder.
Shot during the second World War, "The Major and the Minor" is one of the first film of Billy Wilder. I have seen four movies of this director and they were excellent, mostly "Some like it hot" with Marilyn Monroe.
This movie relate the story of Susan Applegate, tired of working in New York, decide to go back to hometown in Iowa. Despite the fact as she doesn't have enough money for buy his train ticket at full price, she decides to dress like a twelve years old girl for buy a train ticket at half price. Once in the train, she will meet an officer of army who will attach to her.
We have a good time when watching this because it's a bit hard to imagine a thirty years old woman dress like a twelve years old girl... and who succeed! I think Billy Wilder is good to find good actors to his films, as to how they play as their physical. It's the case in this film because the principal actress is beautiful. Some scenes are a bit boring and break the rhythm of the movie.
Zerkalo (1975)
Very special film
"Mirror" of Andrei Tarkovsky is a very different movie from what we are used to see, because the story is a bit difficult to understand if you don't read the synopsis before watch the movie.
Except the lack of understanding i had when watching this movie, some scenes are pretty beautiful and the poems whose are read by the narrator are admirable. The music is composed by a compositor as i discovered on the soundtrack of Solaris, directed also by Tarkovsky.
However, the movie contain some boring scenes, and be a bit lost when watching it wasn't a good point for me. I think i need to watch it a second time for understand it and appreciate it.
Taken 2 (2012)
The first was better, but decent sequel.
I have been to the premiere in Paris with the presence of Liam Neeson and the director Olivier Megaton. It wasn't the real premiere because the movie has been projected at the french festival of Deauville one day before.
I really loved the first episode so i really wanted to watch the sequel, though i had a doubt as it will be as good as the first. First, i didn't imagine the daughter fight enemies like Jean-Claude Van Damme for find her father, because it was really stupid to imagine that, or maybe be used of "so bad it's good" movies.
The first hour is really good but i didn't enjoy much the last twenty minutes because i thought it was over. It was projected in original language with french subtitles and at the beginning, the Albanians kidnappers talk with their friends in English. I verified on internet and the Albanian is the unique official language in Albania. Maybe it was to show us Albanian peoples are bilingual English, or maybe it's a mistake of the director.
Taken 2 isn't a bad sequel, but the first episode was better.
The Hunger Games (2012)
I Didn't read the book and i enjoyed the movie
I finally watched The Hunger Games. It was pretty good, i didn't read the book so i enjoyed. Some peoples compares it to the movie Battle Royale, came out some years before the Hunger Games books, the stories are different, but the theme is same. Battle Royale wasn't the first to do a movie about surviving, i watched "The Running Man" few months ago with Arnold Schwarzenegger and it came out in 1987, there was the same theme. I also can quote "Rambo" for movies references. I liked Hunger Games for the styles in it and the casting. I was surprised to see Isabelle Fuhrman from the awesome movie "Orphan" (Clove in Hunger Games) and Donald Stutherland as i saw in many movies.
I also liked the action scenes, mostly the explosion of the supplies. By the way it's a bit stupid to place mines near important stuff. An enjoyable movie if you didn't read books, not really for kids because of some violent scenes.
Scener ur ett äktenskap (1973)
Very disappointed
There are some movies where you already know it's not gonna be good, this one have some proofs of it : the movie is 2h40 long and the story is just focused on a couple. I'm not married so i didn't feel to be concerned in this story.
I think you want to know why i watched this movie. Only because i like the director, Ingmar Bergman, i loved his movie "Wild Strawberries" and i also liked "Fanny and Alexander" and "The Virgin Spring". I heard a lot about this one so why not.
About this film we are going to follow the normal life of a couple with children there are often tensions and many questions in couples in general like : "Does she/he really loves me? Can i trust her/him?. The thing i blame about this film is it's duration about an uninteresting subject : 2h40 about a couple squabbling is very long. It's not very supportable when you see your own parents squabbling few minutes, so imagine suffer this during a large part of a movie.
I think this film would be good for a married couple, or not married though, because it really shows the reality in couples.
La Belle et la Bête (1946)
"This beast has a soul."
"Beauty and the Beast" is a classic french movie as i saw few years ago at T.V, i didn't have a lot of memories of this film so i watched it a second time. I rediscover this film and i appreciate it. The director, Jean Cocteau, has a unique style and makes the movie a bit scary, the mansion of the Beast is very fearful with these statues who looks at you. By the way, these statues also can be seen in the movie "Hantise" (1999). The soundtrack is very beautiful and sounds like classical music. My favorite character in this movie was the Beast, i liked how it looks like and i think it was very well played. There is a weird ambiance in this film, with things which cannot be explain, like the necklace which can only be wear by the Beauty, and if wear by another person, looks awful. A must see movie.
Casanegra (2008)
Good Moroccan film
I discovered this film by a Moroccan friend who recommended me it. She lend me it and i watched it. It talks about two friends who lives of little jobs and scams in the poor part of Casablanca as they called "Casanegra". It's not really common to hear languages like Arabic in the movies so it's always nice for the ear to hear different language than American films in English. The film is a mixture of genres, i remember as there are some scenes where you laugh, others where you cries and some others where you feel very happy for the characters. I also liked it for the story, i think some peoples lives like them in Morocco.
Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965)
Good B movie.
I remember i watched a documentary about it and that's why i wanted to watch it. It's not common to see action movies with only girls, the last one i noticed was "Sucker Punch". This movie is one of the favorite movies of Quentin Tarantino, i'm not a big fan of him but it can be also a reason to watch it if you like Tarantino. Honestly i didn't think i will enjoy much. I thought it was going to be boring but many scenes were good. I mostly liked the final fight and the race at the beginning. It's interesting to ask "why they are not many movies like this, with girls as protagonists?". A guy will probably much more appreciate it than a girl. Recommanded for peoples who are bored bad guys.
That Tender Touch (1969)
Underrated love movie
The unique reason i watched it was because of the beautiful Sue Bernard who played in "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!". The story is about homosexuality between two women, by the way Sue Bernard looks very younger than Bee Tompkins who looks like her mother than her friend. The soundtrack is a bit poor because i only remember the main song named "That Tender Touch" as you can hear few times in the movie. It's a shame as this movie didn't become famous, it's not as bad as the IMDb rating. The main theme of the movie is like many others love stories : love at beginning and jealousy a bit later so don't except for a original story. Sue Bernard has a good role in it, we see her much more than her invisible role in "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!".
The Rock (1996)
Fun action movie
Michael Bay is actually one the most underrated director, many peoples don't like him, maybe because of the second degree scenes in a serious story. "The Rock" contains some funny scenes and the movie becomes a bit less good than expected. The movie itself is good but the first hour is a bit ridiculous for example with the complaining of the citizens about Sean Connery when he is chased by Nicolas Cage in the streets of San Francisco. The second hour is better and more serious scenes are present, the second degree is till here from time to time though. Also, some peoples criticize the fact as this movie is available in DVD for The Criterion Collection, which is a DVD collection famous for includes classic movies and foreign ones. It's pretty weird to see this film there, but it probably means as they liked too.
The Last Hurrah (1958)
The best political movie i've seen
I have been to the Etrange Festival in Paris and the director Jean-Pierre Mocky talked about this movie, he told as it's the rarest film of John Ford in France but it's his best for him. I didn't know John Ford and i never heard of this film before this festival. He gave me the envy to watch it so i did.
I read a bit about John Ford and i understood as i mostly made western movies than political ones. I really wanted to watch it. The movie itself is interesting, we follow the life of a old man who wants to be a mayor another time in a town of United States of America. Many peoples don't know about how someone is elected as Mayor and we can see exactly all the stages.
I highly recommend you this film if you like John Ford.
Le trou (1960)
Good prison film
This movie intrigued me because of his rating. 8,4/10 is really awesome so i set to watch this movie. It's two hours long and i thought it was going to be long, as i will check many times how much time is left. But no, surprisingly i wasn't bored when i watched it and the movie gone pretty fast. The story is simple, they're building a hole in their cell to break jail. It's pretty effective because we will see exactly how they will build it, note that the shots where there beat the floor are around three minutes, which is pretty long. The only problem with this film is the ending, but the rest of the movie is very good. I liked it and i recommend if you like movies which take place in jail and prison escape film.
Martyrs (2008)
Not as good as they told
"Martyrs" is probably not what i expected as a horror film, i think the first hour was good but what about the second hour? We only see someone being tortured up to her death. It's about an organization who want to know what do you see before die. I really don't understand why so many peoples liked this film. For bloody movies fans, you doesn't will be sad, there are much. I liked the first hour because of it's concept of vengeance. But the scene where Lucie is attacked by a kind of monster is a bit stupid. I think the director wanted to make us think about the human violence but i didn't understand the film like that. For me it was just a bloody movie without story.
Taken (2008)
Liam Nesson at his best!
It was probably one of the best surprises i've seen in my life. I expected a good movie but not that good. I remember as Liam Neeson played cool characters like Schindler in "Schindler's List", but i didn't expected to a character very fast to fight and ready to all to save his daughter. The movie is only one hour and half which doesn't make the film long or boring, not at all. It seems difficult to be bored when watching this movie. I think actors like Sylvester Stallone and Jean Claude Van Damme have a rival now. If you are looking for an action movie which takes places outside the USA, with the idea of revenge, Taken is the movie you need to watch.
La haine (1995)
Loved mostly by the french kids.
"La Haine" is mostly liked by the french kids and teenagers because of it's reality to show the violence in the outskirts in France, mostly in the suburb of Paris. The film is full of morals and it's also why many peoples love it, it's like a fable.
I enjoyed the movie also for the musics : mostly rap but it's what i listened majority when i saw this film for the first time. Vincent Cassel also make a reference to Taxi Driver by saying "you're talking to me?" front of his mirror, many teenagers thinks this sentence is from "La Haine" by the way.
This movie show the reality in the outskirts in France but you can also think it has been shot in any other country. The violence is everywhere.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Better than The Dark Knight
Even if i didn't like much "The Dark Knight", i was waiting for "The Dark Knight Rises" like many other people. I heard about what happened during the premiere of the film in USA and it makes me sad, it's pretty crazy such things happens.
For me, the movie was better than "The Dark Knight". I also liked Bane and i preferred him to the Joker as villain. Marion Cotillard isn't very present in this film except for the little twist ending. We don't know what happens to Bane, he seems to be dead though. I preferred this one to the "The Dark Knight" for the characters and the scenario. I loved the chant of the prisoners, which at first i thought it was German but in reality it's Moroccan Arabic.
My favorite with Batman Begins. Nolan made a good trilogy about Batman.
The Dark Knight (2008)
Less good than Batman Begins
I loved "Batman Begins" so i was excited to watch "The Dark Knight". Evn his rating was awesome so it gave me another reason to watch it. Also, the actor who plays The Joker died at the age of twenty eight.
My impressions of this film won't be like many others peoples : i didn't enjoy that much and i'm not going rate this 10/10 or 9/10 but 7/10. I will explain why : I think the movie doesn't have rhythm because it chain one action scene and one scene with only dialogs all the time. Also, there are many scenes where you think it's over but in reality it's not (when Batman get the joker at the top of the building for example). So i felt as two hours and half were a bit long.
Except all i told above, i liked the other things of the film. The Joker was nice and Heath Ledger played him very well.
Batman Begins (2005)
A good adaption of the comic
"Batman Begins" is the first episode of a trilogy directed by Christopher Nolan. Tim Burton already made two movies about Batman : "Batman" and "Batman Returns". How will be this new adaptation of Batman?
Like the title say, we will know more how Bruce Wayne became Batman. First he discovered the future "Batcave" and will learn how to fight with the help of Ducard and Ra's Al Ghul. The Scarecrow and Ducard will be the big villains of the movie, there are others villains but they aren't defeated by Batman himself.
The movie is a bit slow to start but the second hour is very great. I liked the scenario and the action scenes, a great adaption of the comic book. If you didn't do, you should watch this film.
Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam (1920)
Great characters
I watched it because the design and the story seemed to be nice, i wasn't disappointed about that. You can be sure when you watch this film, to see a beautiful golem and decorations. The others characters are also great, mostly Lyda Salmonova with her role of the Rabbi's daughter. I was also impressed by the soundtrack which fit nice with the pictures. The ending was pretty sad but it's how the movie finish and there were no alternative ending at this time. The directors aren't famous and "The Golem" is their only famous film, it's a bit sad because it's a nice movie. The theme of the Golem already have been done in cinema twice before this movie, an lost film released in 1915 and a comedy in 197 named "The Golem and the dancer".
Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (1920)
Disappointing silent movie
"The cabinet of Doctor Caligari" is a legendary movie for many peoples because it's the most famous for provides the basis of the horror film. I'm not a huge fan of silent movies, but this one was pretty boring. I do like horror film and dark movies, but this one didn't interested me, probably because it's a silent movie.
The twist ending is not that good, i expected a better one but it's the first one, not the best one.
I liked the decorations and the characters. I enjoyed the style of Cesare played by Conrad Veidt. Probably the origins of the Gothic style.
Le voyage dans la lune (1902)
History of cinema
It's a bit hard to give a rate about this movie, it's only ten minutes and it was the beginning of the cinema, and more particularly the science-fiction cinema. "A Trip to the Moon" is considered like the first science-fiction movie. Georges Méliès has been inspired by the book of Jules Verne "From Earth to the Moon" for realize this movie.
It's maybe the first science fiction movie, but it doesn't means as there are no special effects. There is one at the beginning when the moon take the capsule in the right eye.
I gave the rate of 9/10 because it was a bit boring but otherwise i liked the story and Méliès is a genius director. He made around six hundred movies but only two hundred were found.
