Boogeyman (2005)
Skip this one.
Something I've noticed lately is that horror movies make for great previews. When I saw the trailer for BOOGEYMAN I was thinking, "This film is gonna rock!" WRONG! This is another terrible Hollywood scare flick that couldn't scare a 12 year old. I jumped more at the preview than the movie. The worst part is the story is so heavy handed that it steals any fun out of this convoluted mess. Let's remember what were making here, guys, it ain't no Oscar contender. Too bad the movie wasn't just a shade worse so it could enter that so-bad-it's good realm. This one is just bad.
There are a lot of great horror movies out there these days so skip this one!
Saw (2004)
Sicko movie, Go!
A sicko movie whose nastiness is almost topped by its weirdness...so obviously any true horror fan worth their salt needs to seek it out! The story is about a surgeon and a photographer who wake up and to find themselves shackled at opposite ends of a nasty-looking toilet. Don't want to say too much but plenty of ugliness ensues. This movie has the perfect mix of scares and a really bizarre plot. The movie's got a decent budget for an indie horror (a little over a million, i think) but it's pretty small for a film that got such a big release. I hear it made a "killing" at the box office, so TAKE NOTICE Hollywood! People want to see this stuff. Go!
Session 9 (2001)
Super Scary!
This movie gave me nightmares for days! Talk about scary. The story takes place mostly in an abandoned Insane asylum. Now that in itself is a messed up. Wouldn't want to go anywhere near that place. The plot is a little confusing, but the atmosphere is amazing. It's not super violent, but I wouldn't recommend letting the kiddies watch this one. It's a little intense for the young ones, believe me I found out...the hard way. At least we all got to stay up together the last few days. I can't believe this movie didn't become more popular. It's at least as good as something like "The Ring" or "Seventh Sense". Caruso is great in it and so is the rest of the cast. Completely recommended.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
TERRIBLE
You who are defending this movie need to see the other movies out there this year. This has been one of the GREATEST YEARS FOR HORROR that you don't need to see worthless nonsense like this. Go see CABIN FEVER or rent 28 DAYS LATER or 1000 CORPSES, or go for great indies like MAY or KILLER ME, but avoid this terrible remake. This movie is the death to horror.
May (2002)
Excellent
This movie is Excellent. Awesome! Run out and rent this movie if you are a horror fan. I find the May character so sympathetic. I can recall so many boyfriends who've just wasted me. Truly a creepy, eerily satifsfying revenge tale. One of the best movies of the year.
Cabin Fever (2002)
This movie Rules!
This movie is great! I loved it! My god, after all the lame crap that's come out in the past few years it's so refreshing to finally see a horror film with some teeth. I was actually nervous during much of this movie. Thank god for Eli Roth, the director. God bless him.
Killer Me (2001)
I loved this movie.
I LOVED this movie. Bravo! Finally a horror movie with some heart! Unlike so many forgettable serial killer movies out there this one is actually going to stick with me. It's another one of those recent indie horror movies that's so much more brave than anything Hollywood would dare to make. The characters feel like real people, admittedly pretty twisted people, which makes the situation all the more tense. At the heart of the movie is a weirdo love story that is almost more uncomfortable to watch than the scenes of murder. Don't think yourself too twisted if by the end you finding yourself rooting for the serial killer!
