Dirty Girl (2010)
Innuendo at its finest!!!
What do you get when you take the a girl that looks for love in all the wrong places and an out of place gay friend searching for the girls dad? A movie that doesn't rub your face in the lifestyles choices made by the main characters. I really liked this film. Juno Temple did an outstanding job as did Milla Jojovich as the single mother of two. The story makes a circle and was very heart warming. The film makers use of innuendo was excellent. Most films show every gory detail to validate the characters and in this case the film maker left it up to your imagination. There was well timed humor through out the film and the harshness of reality. It demonstrates that we can only deal with what we have in front of us. I walked away happy I spent the time watching it. I liked the out of the ordinary film and would definitely recommend it!!!!
Killer Joe (2011)
A Very Intense Thriller and Really Dark!!!!
I liked this film, though it was a bit harsh. I was impressed with Matthew McConaughey's performance. I have always liked him as the good guy and this film showed his depth as an actor. I had no trouble adjusting to him as a villainous character. It definitely earned the NC-17 rating and I was impressed with the films flow. The film maker made an incredible film that showed a different perspective and had subtle shocks woven in. Scenes were disturbing because they had realistic "sign of the times" brutality. It was worth seeing, though I am not sure I would want to watch it a second time. Some films though brilliant are too disturbing to watch more than once. I didn't see the R rated version, so I may check that out. Though I applaud the film maker for leaving me shocked.
Here Comes the Boom (2012)
I watched the movie to see Bas Rutten and Kevin James won me over!!!!
It's right before the biggest fight of his life against the toughest opponent he can imagine. Kevin James reaches his hands up and they are grasped by his corner in a show of brother hood as the four men wait in suspense as his opponent makes his way to the cage. I loved this movie!!! I enjoyed this up beat story of a nearly middle aged man having one last run to save a friend and the music program. I am a big Bas Rutten fan and I think he was hysterical!! I think this movie will rid stereotypes associated with the great new sport of MMA. I was surprised at how the stupid humor was still funny and if you watch Inside MMA then you would see that Bas is right at home clowning around. Selma is always a treat for the eyes and while she played the old fashioned girl with principles she was a gentle distraction from the main storyline. I think Kevin James ought to be careful playing the big hearted guy that will go through anything for a friend as he definitely has that role perfect in this film. I look forward to watching this movie again and again.
Ted (2012)
Wow, I laughed so hard I had to watch it twice....
Where to begin.... I loved this movie! I laughed so hard I had to watch it twice. Mark Wahlberg is a great actor and he plays the innocent dumb ass better than anyone else. He is so believable in this film that I felt it made it even funnier. The bear was hysterical also. I love slap stick and raunchy humor. I was wiping tears when Ted and Mark get in a fist fight. I really didn't pay that close of attention to character development in this film because I was laughing so hard. Mila is always hot and can act too so she was awesome as the leading lady. I also liked Ted's girlfriend.... If you want a feel good laugh until you cry movie, then go see this one...
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Well I liked it!
I was excited to watch the third installment of Nolan's Batman films. I honestly felt that Tom Hardy made this film awesome. I was surprised that Tim Drake was a policeman as he was Robin number 2. I thought the use of the original Selina Kyle as Catwoman was genius. I get so tired of watching comic book inspired films stray from the origins of the superhero or villain. I agree that the movie dragged in parts and I wish we would have seen more Batman. Hathoway's catwoman was much better than the Michelle Pfeifer portrayal, although Michelle filled out the suit better. How a film maker can try and fit 70 yrs of Batman in 3 films leaves something to be desired. I still think the original 1966 tongue and cheek Batman was the best of the films. I spent more time wondering what was going on and less time cheering for Batman in Nolan's version.
The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
Am I that old that they remade it already???
I for one thought the movie was OK. I didn't think it was amazing at all. This version had its highs and lows, but am I really watching this film remake? Emma looks awesome as usual and Sally Fields was believable as Aunt May, but then again its Sally Fields. She could play a bush in the front yard and be convincing at it. I'm always disappointed with film makers trying to cash in and compete with other super hero films that are being released. Marvel has so many other characters to make films about and after the "musical" I think the Spidey movies should halt. To be honest I would have rather seen a team up Spidey movie then a rehashing.....
Melancholia (2011)
I felt dumber for having watched this film!!!!!
What a load of crap!!!!!! I absolutely HATED this film. Its a waste of 2 hrs. I usually like Kirsten Dunst but this movie was just plain dumb! If this was a look inside the melancholic mind, then I prefer to keep my eyes closed. The character development was shoddy and the gratuitous sex scene was nonsensical. I didn't feel sorry for any of the characters and I'm glad it ended the way it did! I just wish it had 90 minutes earlier. Aside from seeing Kirsten Dunst nude I would avoid this film all together. The cute kid that played Kirstens nephew was about plastic. He had no emotions and was probably the only "adult" acting character in the whole film.
Defendor (2009)
An unfunny ripoff of the 1978 film Nunzio
Wow I read all the great reviews of this terrible film. I laughed at one scene and it was barely a chuckle. Woody Harrelson is a funny guy, but I couldn't believe how unfunny this movie is. In 1978 there was a movie titled Nunzio and it was about a mentally challenged man that dressed up in a towel with a homemade "S" on his cape and he thought he was a super hero and at least his heroism was realistic. I felt sorry for Defendor because he was so head strong and walked right into every situation in an unbelievable fashion. From the bubble gum and the firecracker to open an unlocked door, to the getting an undercover police man killed and screwing up the investigation, to the psychiatrist begging the judge to let him go. I honestly (to quote Adam Sandler's principal in Billy Madison) felt dumber for having watched it! I guess the writer saw Defendor as the Batman to Nunzio's Superman, lol. I am so glad that people find movies where the actor portrays an individual that is a danger to himself and others as heroes. I never liked Rain Man and it won accolades. Dustin Hoffman's portrayal of an autistic savant was at least realistic. When Defendor has breakfast with pancakes and gets arrested he probably would have been committed not released to the guy that supervised him at work!!! I can not believe how this crap is ingenious. How did he get a drivers license if he was slow?? He wouldn't have been able to pass the written exam let alone drive around in a huge city owned vehicle. This was not heart warming it was a sad excuse for a feel sorry for the main character cause he "didn't know any better." The psychiatrist is to blame for the ending. I think she should have her medical license revoked! I threw corn at the screen when the crack prostitute (I'm being politically correct) promised to change. Yeah right Alice, step through another looking glass and bring plenty of band aids!!! To all of you that wrote how brilliant this film was I have some advice: If you want to see a more realistic mentally challenged superhero watch a great film like Nunzio from 1978 and then re-read your review! You may actually see why I am so animate about the general dumbness of this film. Woody I still love you as an actor and everyone is entitled to make a bad film here and there. This one was definitely yours!!!!
Beatdown (2010)
Unconventially wonderful and definitely not a chick flick!!!!
I don't know where to begin. I really enjoyed this movie for a number of reasons. First, the romance between Erin and Brandon did not involve a gratuitous sex scene and the nudity in the film had nothing to do with the main characters. Their relationship was extremely wholesome and they spent the majority of their time on screen talking about their feelings.
Second, It was full of action packed fights with a lot of blood in a realistic manner. Third, while the ending was somewhat predictable, I felt there was enough of a twist to keep it fresh. This is not a Rocky type movie! I find most movies make the hero a goat first and this one was full of excitement from beginning to end.
I thought Michael Bisbing who is one of my favorite fighters was good as Drake, he was playing a former fighter that took fights from time to time to pay the bills. His line delivery was as a matter of fact instead of with feeling but Michael brought his consummate cool which made him a likable supporting character.
Props to Susie Abromeit (Erin)for playing the drop dead gorgeous girlfriend without the winy you'll get yourself killed crap. Rudy Youngblood (Brandon)and Eric Balfour (Victor) carried the film as actors and I thought they were the two standout performances in the film.
You may remember Brandon's dad from "From Dusk till Dawn" (as the bartender) his character was a paraplegic ex-abusive parent and widower that had found religion to avoid talking about the past and dealing with his emotions regarding his son.
If you are a fan of MMA and enjoy a good fight, then this is a movie you could watch again and again. Unless your girlfriend/wife/significant other is in to extreme realistic violence, you may want to watch this without them.
The Wrestler (1974)
Not nearly as good as All the Marbles but it was entertaining
This film could have been so much more than a Verne Gagne ego boost. The owner of the AWA made the movie to promote himself and the AWA. One of the greatest scientific wrestlers of all time that had more money than he knew what to do with and this film is the result. For its time it was the best wrestling film till All the Marbles came out in 1981. I enjoyed seeing a young Don Muraco before he became Magnificent and the original Rock. It introduces you to the staples of the AWA wrestling circuit and I imagine if you grew up in the Minnesota area and watched it on local TV it was time capsule of early 70's wrestling. I thought the ending was superb for a B movie and that is why I scored it a 4. Campy and boring are two words that come to mind when I think of this film, in fact it reminded me of early rap music where the rappers had to tell you how great they were instead of letting you decide it for yourself. Verne's wife in the movie was my least favorite character and was guilty of over acting her part as the concerned spouse who thinks her husband should retire before he gets himself killed in the ring. It does treat wrestling as a sport instead of a soap opera and Ed Asner is great as usual. I bought a copy and will probably watch it from time to time for the nostalgia.
Body Slam (1986)
Roddy Piper is a better pro wrestler than an actor but his comedic ability shines!!!!
I have seen a majority of Roddy Piper's films and this one I saw long before cable brought tbs and nwa wrestling into my home. I only knew who he was because I had read about him in the wrestling magazines I bought as a kid. Wrestling is like a circus without the animals (at least the real kind lol). I thought the movie was well done for being a low budget film. I was entertained but I have been a Wrestling fan since the days of Bruno Sammartino. I enjoyed the nostalgia of the old school wrestlers and though I am not much of a Dirk Bennedict fan I do remember him from the A Team. The plot made sense and I felt though it was predictable it was still interesting enough to set through more than once. Roddy Piper plays a much more subdued version of his true ring persona and considering he has been wrestling since he was 15 I think he took the bumps well and delivered for his fans. If you hate this film remember a lot of folks grew up watching the pretend sport instead of the drawn out, treat it like a TV show wrestling we see on TV presently. I liked this film much better than the Verne Gagne movie The Wrestler, but it isn't in the same league as the Mickey Rourke film of present day. It examines the wrestlers going after the title much like All The Marbles and leaves you cheering and jeering through out the film.
...All the Marbles (1981)
Another great wrestling movie that still treats it like a sport.
I have always been a Burt Young fan and to see this film was definitely a treat. I always knew wrestling was a show and not a real sport although the athletes themselves are really taking the bumps and it does take a lot of ability to pull off the moves. I was extremely annoyed when wrestling became a "sports entertainment", because it is more bullshitting than wrestling now a days. I for one applaud movies like the original Wrestler with Ed Asner and Body Slam as they kept the secret of wrestling well hidden. The tongue and cheek way I watched it growing up illustrated the fact that no one could really do that 360 days a year and survive. I especially enjoyed this film because of its plot. A tag team wrestles their way to the top and will do almost anything to get a shot at the title. Burt Young plays a great heal in the film and you genuinely despise him as the film goes on. Peter Falk is his usual charming fatherly type and this film didn't feel staged. I am not familiar with either actress that played the California Dolls so for the first film I have seen them in they did an astounding job. I felt it was more realistic then 1974's The Wrestler which was more of a B rated film. I think that any wrestling fan that longs for the old days of pro wrestling will really enjoy this film. For the new agers who like all the sex and story lines that ruined the old school programs there is enough eye candy to keep you entertained....
Layer Cake (2004)
Confusing with more twists than a bread tie and an incredible ending to boot!!!
I have always preferred Irish film because it draws you in and generally slams you in the end and Layer Cake was no disappointment. Daniel Craig's character XXXX was reminiscent of James Woods in Diggstown and was smooth. I felt compassion for him through out the film and realized who he was and what he was about by the end.
Tom Hardy was cool as Clarkie though I really saw him as a supporting character which they really hadn't developed and Colm Meaney is one of the best character actors I have ever seen. I think he may be the George C Scott of the new millennium. If you like watching a fuse light and burn down to the final boom, This movie is definitely worth your time. Remember if you blink an eye you may get lost, but it was such a great movie you probably won't mind watching it again.
Bronson (2008)
Tom Hardy won me over with a brilliant performance!!!!
It is rare I get to watch a film that I don't know any of the actors or actresses and Tom Hardy was fantastic. I think he played Bronson's character in a self absorbed way. He made me laugh, dropped my jaw with his sheer violent nature, and I never felt sorry for him once. I had no idea what was going to happen next. I enjoyed the stage show atmosphere being mixed into the various prison and insane asylum locations. It held my attention through out the film and showed a different prison experience. He had depth and reacted as someone who spent 30 of 34 yrs in solitary confinement. The guards were brutal and met each of his challenges head on without retreat. I think it showed a very realistic side of "Britans most violent criminal". I think this is one of the best films I have ever seen and I will definitely watch it again!!!! Props to you Mr Hardy for showing that you are a master at the art of acting!!!!
The Babysitters (2007)
Girl is the other woman capitalism takes over and life bites you in the bum.
The babysitters is far from a dark comedy, but I must agree it was an excellent film. I thought the majority of the sex scenes were filmed in good taste. I think the actresses showed a very cold nature, but considering they were selling themselves to get into college I felt it worked well. The film left me wondering how gritty this movie ended up being. I really enjoyed the transformation of Shirley into the boss of the girls in her "club". She is heavy handed and shows how money and secrets turn a normal girl with ODD into a capitalistic madame with a strong right arm. I agree that it showed men as shallow and selfish, but the girls were profiting which I think made sense. I didn't find it a 10 because of the picture it painted and the disturbing ending. I think Shirley got her just deserve and the only one I felt sorry for was the innocent "step brother". If you like gritty with titty this is for you. If you want something funny and sweet do not take a seat!!!!
Hairspray (2007)
I won't even watch it till it comes out on TV
I have no desire to pay anything to see this film! I can not believe that John Travolta who I really like as nearly any character he has ever played could even attempt to recreate Divine's most incredible performance. I saw the original and it was awesome to see one of the world's best character actors (because you forget she is a he) play a woman and get away with it. Too Wong Foo was funny because Wesley Snipes (who is the farthest thing from a drag queen) and Patrick Swayze and John Leguizamo were incredible. I think the prosthetic suit that made John Travolta a big woman was a cheap ripoff from Shallow Hal and Mrs Doubtfire.
I think the filmmakers instead of cashing in on John Travolta should have used a real drag queen to pay tribute to one of the most famous drag queens of them all. I will watch it on TV only because they used John Water's 1988 script. If you see this as a tribute to Divine then it is supposed to be a fantastic version of a classic. I however won't give it a single red cent as I feel it is exploitive of overweight people for the sake of copying an amazing performance whether in tribute or not. Shallow Hal and Mrs Doubtfire made a point that incredible things come in big packages.
I finally watched the new film (am I glad I didn't pay at the theater) John Travolta was worse than I thought he was going to be. Why didn't they have him use his regular voice, it would have been less pathetic...Divine blended into the movie, John stood out as the co-main character....Such is life.....
The Dark Knight (2008)
Batman the best version to date! Joker was not what I expected.
I want to start by saying I was very impressed with this film and I could watch it a million times. I thought Gary Oldman who is one of my favorite actors because of his diversity brought Commissioner Gordon into the story as a main character instead of the winy guy that turns to Batman to solve his problems. I think Christian Bale is by far the best Batman yet, however I think George Clooney was a very close second. If Clooney would have had a better script instead of the outlandish campy romp he went on with Mr Freeze and Poison Ivy, I think he may have shined.
I must now be overtly honest. I did not like the Joker in this film at all! He may have been a psychopathic killer but he was not at all funny, in fact he was disturbing. The rivalry between Batman and Joker has been around for nearly 75yrs and I didn't feel the Joker had any respect for Batman at all. Heath Ledger was an awesome actor and I really enjoy his films. He has a depth that is hard to find and he becomes believable as his characters. Had he not died before the movies release I wonder how people would have reacted. The Joker was silly even though he was psychotic and I didn't even chuckle at his laugh like I have in the past. Cesar Romero invented the character in the 1966 series and in the first movie. I felt Jack Nicholson was by far the absolute best joker. Batman from 1989 should have been called "The Joker". Dark Knight succeeded at further developing Batman's character, unlike Tim Burton, who seemed to spend more time developing the criminals than he did Batman's or Robin's character and aside from butchering the story of Batgirl as Alfred's niece made the films a step above campy. Heath Ledger barely laughed in the movie and when he finally did my mouth was so wide open with awe from trying to figure out who he was portraying that it finally hit me it was the Joker after all. I am glad they didn't reiterate the Jokers origins but in all honesty the Joker was a lot more fun to watch in the other films.
Christian Bale continued the dark detectives amazing skills and I especially enjoyed the brawling in both films he starred in. I thought this one was the best by far but if Jack Nicholson or even Christian Slater had played the Joker It would have been a masterpiece instead of a Damn Good Film!!! I highly recommend this to anyone who has ever liked the caped crusader and I look forward to the next movie.
To sum up, in my opinion if you are looking for the Joker to bring a laugh or too, then be prepared for his ominously hellish demon like rendition of my favorite criminal and part time resident of Arkum Asylum. Batman and Commissioner Gordon are in top form and both had stellar performances. The aura of the movie is even darker than any before it and it is certainly a must see film!!!!
No Contest (1995)
Andrew Dice Clay as the bad guy, Shannon Tweed as an action star
I personally thought Andrew Dice Clay made this film an 8 out of 10!!! I read the reviews and if I have to read another "sheep answer" of this film being a Die Hard ripoff I am going to scream!!!! First of all I didn't think it had anything to do with Die Hard. I saw the Die Hard films and enjoyed them very much. Bruce Willis proved he was a good actor. Dice proves that he is a very talented comedian that can act also. I felt Dice showed his diversity being the villain and in Making the Grade he incorporated his stand up and impressions in this role as well. I saw an interview with Dice and he told his fans his goal is to make you laugh till it hurts so you know you saw a comedian. I almost didn't recognize him in his disguise when I saw the movie on cable and tuned in late. I was amazed at how well he convinced me he was the villain. I found myself hoping he would get away. Unlike Brainsmasher or Ford Fairlane he played his part without being the main character. I thought Shannon Tweed should have stayed with romantic comedy or drama as she wasn't convincing as an action star. I loved her in Hot Dog the Movie and she is an extremely beautiful person. Roddy Piper is the type of character you either like or you don't and I for one appreciate the talent it took to be a pro wrestler and I always enjoy seeing him in film. "They Live" had the coolest ending though with bad one liners.
I am astounded with all the "rip-off" statements that reviewers post because there are few originals for all the re manufacturing of a concept that film makers use. If you are a fan of Andrew Dice Clay you will really enjoy this film as much as I did. If he would have gotten away with his crime that would have been a unique ending instead of the bad guy loosing in the end. Gee, there is a concept, a film that depicts life.
A quick note from the reviewer: A rip off is the same plot with a twist and I didn't see where the plots were simular at all. Where was the yipee kay aye (blankity blank) and cowboy heroism????
