Step Up 3D (2010)
Impressive Dance Sequences Make Up For Weak Everything Else
The Step Up brand has quickly become the big name in dance movies. The first two were surprise hits, but with all the new dance movies and TV shows out in recent year, does Step Up offer anything new to crowded genre?
After watching Step Up 3D, I felt divided, at times it looked mediocre, yet other moments looked absolutely stunning. The 3D, unlike in other movies is actually good and enhances the movie. As, shown in the marketing, the movie is full of big spectacular dance sequences that use 3D very well, and creates some moments, where the audience are in awe of what is happening on-screen, even with all the dance TV shows and other movies Step Up offers some genuinely amazing moments.
Leaving the spectacle aside, the film is very weak in the acting and writing departments. The dialogue is terrible and the storyline is a generic copy and paste from other films in the genre. Director Jon Chu, who directed the last film (Step Up 2: The Streets), thankfully knows this and makes sure to keep the character development and exposition scenes to a strict minimum. The movie never really loses its pace and goes from dance sequence to dance sequence. Many moviegoers may think this is lazy(and it is), but fans of the genre will surely love it. This is generally The Fast and The Furious of dance movies, in that it has what fans want, but everyone else could care less. But unlike the last installment in The Fast and The Furious series, where the main attraction(the races) were poorly done, CGI race sequences. Step Up 3D, actually has real dancers, doing all the dance sequences with adds to the already impressive spectacle on-screen.
The film, like I mentioned suffers from some bad writing and generic plot. The film instantly becomes nearly unwatchable whenever the dancers take a break. The dance sequences may be thrilling high quality moments, expertly choreographed moments, but whenever the movie slows down to tell its story, it seems like a straight-to-DVD movie. Moose (Adam G. Sevani, who played the same role in the last movie) is now starting his first semester at NYU with his female BFF Camile (Alyson Stoner). He's supposed to be studying engineering, but his fondness for street dancing might get in the way. That all you really have to know, to understand that it's the typical dance flick.
Closing Comments
If you liked the first two Step Up movies,or Fame or Stomp the Yard. You will like this as well. You get what you pay for, 3D dance sequences that jump out on-screen. Step Up 3D, does bring bigger sequences that almost any modern dance movie, but if you want decent characters and storytelling that is not in the price of admission, Just sit back, watch the amazing dances sequences and don't think too much.
Get Him to the Greek (2010)
Great Hilarious Summer Comedy
In the soft chewy center of every Apatow movie there is a heartwarming message and that somehow has always flowed naturally with the movie no matter how raunchy. In Get Him to the Greek it didn't workout so well, it was kinda forced. Also, this movie never felt like it had a real lead. The movie is a spin-off of a supporting character from the movie "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" which in like every Apatow movie the supporting characters are the funniest parts, so what could go wrong when you make a movie from the funniest parts of an Apatow movie. The message get forced in at the last minute because the story isn't making any progress because jokes are being told every 5 seconds its not a bad thing but it kills the buzz at the last 15 mins and slows down this really fast paced movie. The movie starts funny and it just gets crazier and more raunchy as it goes but the message slows it down and it feels out of place plus this brought memories from Walk Hard the other musician Apatow movie which in the directors cut has 35 minutes in the comeback phase of the artist. It feels like Apatow liked that so much that he picked his other character that sings and made a movie out of it. Walk hard is a more quotable movie but Get him to the Greek is better but unlike Walk Hard its dated thanks too way to many pop culture references and cameos which was the bad thing with Funny People way to many cameos there are all funny but not all of them are necessary. The movie is really funny.Russell Brand is insane,Jonah Hill is funny but he has done better.Diddy steals every scene he is in but what made this movie is the insane amount of not giving a crap that Russell Brand brings he is the Rock Star of comedy and the f'd up moments are really f'd up even for Apatow, the dildo scene was hilarious.
Too sum up.The movie is really enjoyable and hilarious. The heartwarming moment was out of place but well executed to a certain degree.Russell Brand is top-notch.And I know I mentioned Apatow names a bunch of times but this is really Director Nicholas Stollers movie.
8/10 It's a really funny movie but it wont be as memorable as other Apatow produced or directed films Rent it
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010)
Better than the previous but it's still too uneven
In the core of The Twilight Saga, there is the love story of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. And in the first book I found this rather entertaining and cheesy but still entertaining. But as the books kept adding more and more, that was lost and the movies while being poorly made aren't really helping. In Eclipse this core isn't really part of the movie, the movie works with all the added material, mainly Jacob Black.
Robert Pattinson is an actor I do like but not playing Edward. His performance in Eclipse relies solely on the same painful look on his face and nothing else, and he talks kinda like an emo Christopher Walken. He does have a good few lines in the movies, but nothing else really. Edward come off as a jerk and rather creepy, instead of charming as he is supposed to be. Kristen Stewart has the hardest job as she has the weakest character. Kristen doesn't fit this role at all, she is a great actress that ends up coming off as flat and uninteresting as Bella, thanks to a uneven screenplay. And her character just gets weaker and weaker as the movies go on, she can even make the most simple of decision in this movie. Then there is Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black that is fantastic in this, the one character I didn't care for at all in the books, is the only one I give a damn about in the movies. Lautner plays Jacob with a certain mix of charm and a cocky attitude that works on- screen and is fun to watch. The rest of the rest of the cast is decent, unlike the previous movies in which they really didn't have much of role, in Eclipse they all play a much bigger part and they all worked well. There is definitely chemistry in the supporting cast.
The big improvement of Eclipse is that it doesn't take itself as serious as the previous installments. They joke around about how over the top and ridiculous everything is and it makes the movie easier to like and more fun to watch. The other improvement is the action,it's very well choreographed and it's exciting and entertaining to watch. These are much-needed improvements in the franchise and they made the experience so much enjoyable.
There are still many problems needed to make these movies great, Eclipse is the only one of these movies that I would say is good, but still many improvements are needed. The plot of the army of new-born vampire could have been more interesting but the plot is really non-existing because the movie keeps its focus so much on Edward,Bella and Jacob that they rush the story towards the end and just tell you whats gonna happen instead of showing us, and letting us be part of the film. So, it feels more like a friend explaining the novel to you instead of you paying to watch the work of professional writers, actors and director. And, I know that Twilight is more about the characters than the plot, but when the lead character is so weak, and Edward being so obviously one note, that leaves the movie in a tough position. I like the supporting cast but their time is so limited on-screen they don't add much to the movie, so it's up to leads and only Lautner stepped up .One actor can only do so much.
So summing things up, Eclipse is a decent movie, way ahead of the previous installments. It still won't win over non-fans, but with the better made action scenes and occasional humor it's a more enjoyable experience. Many improvements are still needed, but this is a good step forward. It's more of the same but it's better made.
I give it a 6.5/10
