Larry (2022)
One of the best movie experiences in the last few years
A nice surprise this movie.
Acting is awesome, there is a great character growth. Pictures are SO realistic you get sucked into the story and it becomes your reality. Very rough but very nice.
The main actor Benett playing Adam is doing a very good job at portraying of this stuttering boy. I love the friendship found with his rapper friend.
It is not a happy movie, not a good-feel movie but definitely a movie that tells a story worth telling, showing that specific area of Hungary (deepest poverty). Even as a Hungarian I know nothing of these depths - luckily. This story stays with you. I am very happy to have discovered this actor, will keep on eye on him, just like I will for the director.
Must watch.
Müanyag égbolt (2023)
What an impressive representation of our acopalyptic world
My review will be the first - how odd. As this movie has been out in Hungarian cinemas. I hope many many people will go and watch this story.
First of all, the technique it was drawn with is impressive. I was lucky enough to meet the two creators/directors and they described the tremendous work this movie required. If the genre of animation is not your jam don't be distracted - it is real acting by real actors, then drawn on the pictures by hand, so all the movements of the face, reactions, wrinkles feel real. This work has been under production for 8 years.
The story is pretty engaging. Set in the far future (2123) in Budapest and Hungary, we get to know a world without life except for a very few people who could survive, but for that they must pay a big price...
I was very much busy with the visuals (lovely long scenes of natural images of the storms/streams of water/buildings). For me the center story - the love story - is actually less engaging than the social and ecological part of the movie. It is becoming more and more realistic as the time passes by, our beloved Earth is slowly giving in and will become as hostile to us as we are treating our home.
This movie should be on the must-watch list of everyone, and especially those who love science fiction and dystopian TV show and movies. Also anyone who is concerned about how to adapt to our near future apocalyptic world. It is a bit of Avatar meet Death, love, robots meet Blade runner.
I hope they will recieve the appratiation they deserve...
I took off a star only because of some minor issues I had in the representation and logic in the story.
Marriage Story (2019)
Forget Joker. Good movie making is starting with films like this one
I am not sure this movie got anything wrong. It is about people, very real people, who do fail to be certain people but the process of failing just makes them so relatable and lovable. Nicole and Charlie are getting a divorce, and you think there will be a good guy and a bad one. But they are both vulnerable and by the end of the day want to do the right thing, and not only the thing that brings them satisfaction. It is not a fist fight but a storm of emotions, emerging waves of the past and rocky mountains of the future.
The acting is very very well executed, here and there a bit too many tears - but as it is about a divorce totally realistic. So is the representation of the ongoing divorce. The music is lovely, I especially loved the ending having musical elements.
There are quite a few inserts of funny elements that takes away from the movie's dramatic tone: like when Charlie cuts himself with that tiny knife, I actually laughed, or when Nora is talking about Jesus and his absent father.
We can all relate to these characters, and parenthood is represented so vividly.
On the technical side it was neatly executed, as well, editing etc.
I couldn't help but seeing a lot of Woody Allen in this movie, mostly because of its wittiness and pace, and the music.
Definitely a watch. I wish there would be more movies like this made out there....
Never Let Me Go (2010)
Profound? Maybe. Motionless, depressing, pointless, vague? Definitely.
This is a big disappointment for me. I have been searching for the movie for ages, as it looked so promising. Well, it was in vain.
I was hoping to see a breathtaking storyline (with a little science fiction spice to it), drama, love, scenery. The setting tells it all: the grey clouds of England settles on our minds, too.
The story started out interestingly: I had chills of mystery, I had no idea what their destiny could be. Then boumm. We get to know they are born to die. They keep seeking their origins - did they have a junkie mom? Were they unwanted? We never know. They are certainly not from very bad background as their health is good enough to donate organs. But then the mood of the film settles to a depressive monotony: scenes happen, years pass. To be very honest even this "love triangle" didn't touch my heart, not the least. We never really get to know what they felt deep down, just the surface. They are walking around as robots, accepting their fate without and rebellion. They are not even TALKing about getting away, or what if....I was thinking at least they could have fought at the very end, when they got to know no, there isn't and there was never a possibility to live longer. Why didn't they call the media, stand on a roof, shout out that WE ARE HUMAN BEINGS and not machines and we have the power to choose about our lives and not you: and jump. At the end they - and us! - deserved a demonstration of some freedom and dignity. They didn't get one. And Tom screams. Impotant, angry and helpless - as this whole movie was. There is nothing we can find as a consolation for our urge to be humans, we lost our power.
I guess it is still the kind of movie that makes you think. So I give 3 little stars. But I lacked all the rest that comes with a good movie: at least some good music, real drama, real dialogues and please anything but monotony (if not I flee).
Maybe the book was more to the point....I can only hope
Blue Valentine (2010)
Why people seem to like this I cannot understand
I gave 3 only because of the great acting. Ryan brills wherever.
There is one thing I don't like. Mixing up meaningful, deep maybe indie approaches with long and motionless movies. This was the latter. Two hours? Why? Stories can be told in a different way, different tone. But was here any story - meaningful story - to be told? Yes, I mean it is the story of an everday couple that could be you and me. I got that. I got also how time can change us and our feelings. But there was NO up and down, no rollar coaster for me - no peak, and no real downs. This movies was just slowly floating on a foggy, grey and blue river. I just felt the blues. And no big drama deliviered, I was waiting for something at least. But nothing. And I couldn't think of anything else just LET me please God, finish with this, just let me pick up my book (One day, brilliant btw) and feel better. Don't let me go to sleep with this bitter, acid aftertaste in my mouth.
7 points for this? I think this was the first real disappointment in the IMDb community's taste.
Maybe the music was good in it....and Ryan. All the rest is something you can happily live without. I can honestly say that this movie didn't give anything to my inner well-being (and I'm a huge Melancholia, or Buffalo 66 fan and like movies like Precious so I can appreciate films other than Hangover or Transformers).
I can frankly say - and I'm not ashamed - I hated this. Just as much I hated Revolutionary Road. And will never understand how they can be appreciated in such an extent.
For a Good Time, Call... (2012)
Sex, Phone, Laughs and friendship
I had to give 10 this movie, though it is not the most hilarious comedy I have every seen but I'm shocked it got only 5,6 average. This was certainly the funniest comedy far I have seen this year. After the trailer I had mixed feelings: it could go reeeal wrong. But fortunately I hadn't. It was fun from the beginning to the end, not a moment when I wanted to "hang up". The not so well-known (first time I saw them) girls acted brilliantly, the situations and dialogues were fresh, realistic. I also loved Justin Long's part, he was great, too.
On the whole: have a nice time and watch it, though not alone....I made this mistake and I really missed a girlfriend to giggle with - as this movie is not only about sex, laughing but also some new-found feeling of deep friendship. Love it!
Jack and Jill (2011)
I had fun, real one
Honestly I was afraid....a lot. Being a huge Sandler's fan, I didn't want to witness yet another faliure... I'm so happy I didn't read IMDb reviews before! I was very nicely surprised. C'mon guys, it is soo far from 3,5...Not long ago I watched That's my boy. I didn't like it... I love most of Sandler's stuff, Big Daddy, or even Click (different genre though).
Al Pacino was a little weird but not hideous. Time to time he happened to be even funny. Yes, the taping kid was a little overacted (but sorry, I just couldn't help thinking: THIS IS THE KID OF USA, americanized poor Indian kid, doing whatever he wants to do. So I appreciated some self- irony there by Sandler, which he can do so nicely so often). It may have the charms of Spanglish. But overall the dialogues were GOOD, jokes flied here and there - somewhere lower somewhere higher.
The biggest compliment I can say is that I forgot MY world around....which is lately my biggest issue, films rarely happen to do the trick, to completely engage me and make me forget about my poor life for 1,5-2 hours. This movie jumped the bar.
My biggest criticism though: I can really see that throughout the movie Sandler was struggling when talking "for himself", the parts when he was talking with Jill, it was shot alone....I felt those parts artificial and not believable.
As a single woman - getting older and older - I could relate to the poor Jill, net dating...feeling lonely....I have been there. That part was really nicely done. What I appreciated, too, as usual the minor characters - as his assistant e.g. - were enjoyable, as well, great lines for them.
I gave 9 .... but I admit it was because of my shock - I expected so much worse after seeing the trailer (I have been delaying watching the movie for so long). It is worth probably something like 6-7, but hey, I'm a true fan! Have fun....
God Bless America (2011)
an indie that takes itself far too seriously.....
Normally I'm insipired to write positive reviews, and honestly this is the first negative one. I'm kind of outraged how this movie got an average 7 points - that finally led me to waste my 11 euros in the cinema.....
The trailer looked a lot better than the film itself. Maybe for American viewers this movie is a huuuuge relevation - giving some kind of a moral (what us, "outsiders" already know about their country). For me this movie was posing far too much - with dialogues that were far too irrealistic (when would a 15-year-old give monologues like that?). It felt like an anarchist propaganda film. Yes, the aggressive shooting scenes were impressive - but everything was so predicatlbe. I didn't feel the touch of originality. It made me think of We need to talk about Kevin. That movie set my mind on a zoombie-mode for days.....it stopped my breathing. This movie just felt like a fart compared to that one.
Yes, sure there was some wisdom - that's the only reason I can give 3 stars. The "couple" of the little Lolita and the over-used older loser was quite improbable, although their acting was not too bad. But the filmmakers pout so unreal words, and unpronouncably long sentences in their mouths that the monologues-dialoges felt like some liberal party's campaign show. Or a theatrical piece - at the best. But not like a movie. The genre is missed.
It didn't make anyone think - everything was pre-chewed, pre-digested - only boringly obvious ideas were transmitted....
For some more depth please try to reach out for other movies, even Michael Moore's documentaries give more....We need to talk about Kevin is a great example how to shock with a minimum of violence (and educate), or watch South Park - or surprisingly the Adam Sandler movies do the same - only through a comic way and laughing.....
Groundhog Day (1993)
One the best movies of all times - on a comical level
I must admit this movie was one of my favorites when I was a teenager. I'm just watching it again, and I felt it necessary to review this film, as the effect has not only not faded away, but actually made the jokes more powerful - as I grasp on them differently, more fully.
Bill Murry's jerk character is so hilarious and original, and his lines are so funny that you cannot resist liking him. On the other hand Andy's angelic, curly haired, innocent face opposes this brut.
I think one of the smartest ideas is that the setting is pure and simple: it could be anywhere BUT nowhere important. Of course, it is important for our character to get stuck in the middle of nowhere - as of course it wouldn't come as a curse to spend every day on a nice island or a big city. Here monotomy hits us hard. And here comes the maturity: people in their 30s, 40s can easily get the metaphor: that 'every day looks the same'. We work, sleep, eat, .... and what else? Something is missing, right? It takes an eternity to realize that there are more important things, human relations, remembering who we are, what makes us happy - and the full capacity of love. This deeper message is nicely wrapped in a funny storytelling, and even more hilarious actions. I don't think we have to simplify it for a "bad" man becoming "good", more virtous, but rather waking up from his own 'groundhog' sleep, a sleep in which he has been spending most of his life....
Have fun, and don't be afraid of your own shadow:)
Marry Me (2010)
BEST romantic comedy in a long time
First of all: WHYYY I haven't heard of that before? Secondly: this is the best, funniest, most charmingly witty and true romcom I have seen. I have seen a lot. All.
My flight just got canceled for a second time. I don't give a damn. All I want is to watch this movie.
Lucy Liu looks stunning, the conversations are so witty and have such a great grasp on reality, that it is something like Sex and the City and Ally Mcbeal combined. I will take it as my personal quest to make publicity for this movie.
THANKS! - dear creators.....
One Day (2011)
The original anti-Hollywood romantic friends in love movie...get ready to be surprised
I have to admit I cannot really be too objective about this movie. I'm just too shocked - in a good way - with surprise.
Let's start with that I have never given 10 so far, even for my favorite movies. This of course doesn't mean that this movie is perfect, just means that let's sh*t on all the little insignificant "this could be done differently" details. This movie is like our best friend: love it with its faults - or especially for those.
I loved the fact that throughout the movie we had the time traveling through the greatest hits....it made me smile all the time. I was wondering if this story would have been more attractive with more attractive main actors: but NO: this couple made the story believable, and although Mr. Dexter won't keep me sleepless during the night, he is a real flesh and blood man, with his troubles. Anne Hatheway is perfect as a British actress - love her accent, and humor, suits her. I love that it never got corny: this love story could happen TO US: as it DOES HAPPEN to us. At least it happened to me.....so I saw myself in them. I have to admit I got upset when Emma died. It was a little bit banal, but as it made me cry - and that weeping went till the end... - so I felt that the impact it had on me was a sign for the right choice of this kind of ending. I mean it had to end somehow - and we cannot see them going to IKEA, or going to get a little Chinese girl.....so in a way it was okay.
I could feel their love. Because it was human, and so full of little imperfections, nothing too dramatic but at the same time beautiful. Also it was a great match to put Paris and London as the two settings - my two favorite cities.
On the whole this movie was a huge surprise for me (have to admit I didn't want to go to the movies back then...thought this would be just another love story, how wrong I was!). It not only made my heart go fonder, but also made me laugh many times, and now I will go to sleep with those images and feelings in my mind.
I WANT ROMANTIC MOVIES LIKE THIS!!! PLEASE!!!
The Fourth Kind (2009)
May be the Fourth kind, but one of the worst kind
I have to start with that until now I have added my opinion to movies that I was enthusiastic about....this is the first time, but I MUST free my frustration - before going to bed....as we never go to bad angry.
I give 2 point only in respect of the PERFECT actors. I have no idea how Milla decided to accept this. She must have been taken by aliens that made her do so!!
That films all kinds of originality, which would be a slight problem. We know many movies that are built on the same idea, but which can float on the strong story-telling features, good pictures, acting, maybe music. This lacked almost all - except for the acting. There was nothing that kept me wanting more - only out of respect I finished the movie. There was no real breathtaking pressure, let alone mystery. Do you know the Richard Gere movie? With the moth....I don't remember the title....well THAT is a good example of how this is done properly.
I think the worst part was this playing the "real". I wish they chose only the "fiction"-al version, as the "real" (which was obviously so unreal) version was just sweaty, tiring, frustrating etc. The nice Halloween-pumpkin-ghost looking lady was creepy, that's alright, but the toneless storytelling just made me upset. Also the divided pictures were tiring to watch - again, even on the left side it was visibly not real. Bad acting, when trying to show something that is real by acting bad?
There were some sound effects, alright....but I didn't scare me, didn't make me wonder if I would be kidnapped tonight, just wanted to turn it off. On the other hand saw Shutter Island yesterday....I had not only nightmares, but quality, well-edited nightmares:))
But I'm surprised that many of other spectators liked it....we are really different!
Year One (2009)
Take it easy kinda laugh
I'm totally on board with the review on main page.....it is far better than an average 5. But as a great Jack Black fan, I'm not too objective. Usually I don't appreciate Monthy Python kind of humour, but in this movie it works for me....I'm just after my wise tooth operation, and it hurts even to smile....and it is hurting a LOT during this movie:D. It is true, not the kind of comedy I would put among the top 10 of all times, for me it should be more complex (good concept, great acting, good laugh). But true, there is the Austin Powers effect: just go with it....and enjoy. I remember watching that movie (Austin) with my ex- boyfriend, I thought he would enjoy it (as he IS a guy, guy kinda simple humour:) sometimes grotesque....and nooo, he hated it:) whenever I see little-me, and the evil, I wanna laugh....and I love the whole parody concept there. Same case here: it is sooo fake that it works - costumes, historical background....I really do enjoy the two main protagonists... So on the whole: not a smart comedy, but a good one...that may just be enough for a movie...
Leap Year (2010)
Go Dublin gooo - 4 thumbs up (feet included)!
I just loved it. The only thing I'm sorry for is that I saw this movie online, and not in the cinema (which is a shame, as I go to the movies almost every week).
The idea is brilliant - though not unique. Although it has already happened - girl fall in love with total stranger, just on the way to her love (sg like French Kiss?? The characters remind me of that...), this movie is so much more. The pictures are amaaaazingly beautiful, and realistic - if you see this film and haven't been to Ireland yet, you will want to go there. I have been to Ireland several times, and it was really great to see it again on screen. And I loved the tiny details: me too, I also have a Claddagh Ring (don't write at which part you will see it), but it is sooo traditionally Irish. And the old Irish people talking about superstition, they were funny.
I didn't like the actress in Julie and Julia, but here, she is really the best!! (If I had to choose between P.S. I love you Irish-American adaptation, and the romantic story overall, and this one: Leap Year would win with long miles). It is not exactly the story itself that makes this project a winning one: details, lively and vividly human situations and FEELINGS. It just goes straight to your heart and head.
As a girl I have to mention, this guy is amazingly cute...making a nice accent as well.
I can only recommend for all of you to watch this....love the idea of "what would you take with you in 60 seconds if there would be a fire"...
WATCH IT! And have fun......
Sex and the City 2 (2010)
Serials: YES, Movies: NOOOOOO!!!
I almost don't have anything more to add up to this looong list of complaints and negative reviews. This is a shame on everyone who ever created this amazingly unique show, and not to talk about the actresses (haven't they earned enough to walk away with pride?? and just say NOO?).
I just don't understand it. Usually they do trial screenings, nobody ever told them, that PLEASE, for God's sake, stopp this disaster??
YES: It is a shameful image of "Europeans-Americans-Civilized" people leaving their comfy cultural boundaries. And the whole Abadilibadu setting is disturbingly childishly nightmareishly idiotic - not like the blood and flesh NYC streets... YES: characters are stupid, and shallow and YES: I will definitely buy a ticket to L.A. and demonstrate naked if they ever start thinking about a 3rd part...and finally NO: you cannot laugh at any of the jokes - simply because they are not funny (don't even dream about the witty and sharp dialogues we got so used to). And come onnnn, I'm a nanny, but when finally Charlotte has 2 kids, and has a full-time nanny, and she doesn't even work, and gets a nervous breakdown, crying in the closet???!! Huh.
Think it over. 2,5 hours. And I thought that the first was bad...
p.s.: Will always love the serials....no matter what...but please, no moreee
The Back-up Plan (2010)
Good comedy with slight weak points
I don't wanna be pessimistic, and I guess the only way to look at this film is to consider that nowadays the selection of comedies is soooo disastrously narrow...usually they use a predictable setting, plot, and no-no surprises. SOO, YES, there are elements which are hard do believe, but this is a movie! And a genre of such, we wanna see fairy tales...and I have to add, as a girl, I would never ever drag my boyfriend to such a movie - only if he insists;) - as this is specifically made for a female audience. So please guys, if you report movies as "dumb" and "unwatchable", don't forget, we think the very same about Star Wars never ending serials, and Fast and Furious, XXX and company... I'm a huge movie fan, and love all kinds of movies, and if I wanna "go dumb", and loose seriousness after a hard week, yes, I may wanna see something out of reality, even if hardly believable.
So to be fair, i start with the biggest week point. 2 biggest week points. The main characters just don't fit, that's true. There is absolutely NO chemistry between J-Lo and her partner, though I find both of them (separated) outstandingly gifted for such a genre. I love J-Lo's comic talent for mimics and she really looks like a cartoon mouse (in a good way), which makes her a good comic actress. Alex as well, is a refreshingly new face, the kind of guy in whom an ordinary girl can fall in love. BUT. She does look like a Latin diva, an oldish one, (those outfits were verrrry wrongly chosen, aieeee) and he does look like a phd student...I never knew what "not working chemistry" meant until now. They didn't sell me that they ever in this world would feel a buzz to touch each other, or would like each other more than friends, which is a pity. It was a mistake to create this couple "made in hell".
Good points. I really did laugh. OK, I really was starving for something comic that evening, but it was really enjoyable, not like "My Ex-girlfriends Ghots", which was indeed something hurtful to sit through. I had kind of panic attacks after having seen that (with Michael Douglas!!!) I liked the tiny details such as the playground seen, the talk with a complete stranger on the bench after the crisis...and the best part was when Lopez was eating the stew with some 8 slices of bread, I did enjoy that as it reminded of my Hungarian origins...stew...and dipping in with some fresh bread...
I also liked the fact that this movie was so out-spoken about fears of the future-dads. THAT part is realistic, and well-described. And how a relationship may change under pressure. And YES, although they moved in together kind of fast, but don't forget we are talking about months on, some 9 months do pass during the storyline...
Absolutely recommend to watch it, with a girlfriend, and not your boyfriend (if not gay)...or a verrry untraditional boyfriend
