Knock Knock (2015)
Soft Candy
The message of the movie is pretty interesting, and one I do agree with.
Everything else seemed pretty cheap. The beginning was interesting, but it seemed to drag on for more than half the movie. Felt like watching a cheap porno. The second half, the torture was not particularly terrifying and the actions of the characters were neither here nor there. Also Keanu Reeves was not very convincing in the film.
Hard Candy did a much better (and terrifying) job of exploring the shallowness of man(kind), so I would suggest that over Knock Knock. Overall though, the movie was an interesting watch and definitely different to most films currently out there. So, if you're bored with the regular thrillers, this might just be for you.
The Riot Club (2014)
More thought provoking than you might expect.
Before watching the movie, I would suggest to read a little bit about the Bullingdon Club, which this movie is based on. It's always better to watch a movie with a little bit of context.
That said, the writer, Laura Wade, explores some very complex issues regarding wealth and peer pressure. While these themes have been depicted in movies over and over again, she does not imply that the entire upper class is a bunch of arrogant pricks, who think they can buy their way out of everything. Clearly, they can, you can't really fault them for that, but the Riot Club is not inherently an evil society. They are rich, they drink, and they sometimes lose control, as we all do. The difference is that there are no consequences for them, so they can keep on doing it. I liked how peer pressure was depicted in this film and how the guilt and responsibility of some of the members was shown. It really made me consider how we act in situations we have very little control over and how responsible should we feel in these kinds of situations.
My only complaint about the movie would be the main character (Miles Richards) being a flawless Mary Sue - rich, handsome, witty, intelligent, kind and well meaning, as well as some of the other positive characters being presented as these morally superior beings. That felt very strange for a movie, the main idea of which is that not everything is as black and white as it seems, and we all just try to justify our own actions while doing what we feel (not think) is best.
The Great Gatsby (2013)
Compliments the book and vice versa.
Now, if you haven't read 'The Great Gatsby' this movie is probably going to make a lot less sense, as you literally cannot fit the whole story with all its depth and complicated relationships into 2 hours. It would still be worth seeing though, as the performances of DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan are quite convincing. I really liked how this movie emphasises the Fitzgerald's idea that nobody is perfect, no matter how rich or poor.
Now, if you have read the book, it's like adding pictures to it, voices, faces, depicting the most meaningful chapters of the book (not all though).
If Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo + Juliet' is making you doubt whether you want to see 'The Great Gatsby', this time he did a much better job recreating the original motive of the book.
Blitz (2011)
Disappointing
I'll start with what I expected from this movie. I expected to see a lot of Jason Statham beating the living hell out of witnesses, criminals and what not to get to this "cop killer", while the killer craftily keeps slaying police officers one by one.
Instead I got a stray of cliché and truly lame one liners from Statham, which often didn't even make sense and at times were slightly humorous, I saw him pointlessly beat up a bunch of kids and pinch a guy. I don't even see the point for him to be in the movie, since the main character in my opinion was the criminal, played by Aidan Gillen.
There were 3 motives in the plot - Statham, though rough, truly being a good guy, Statham working with this 'special' officer and their evolving friendship and this sick psycho schizophrenic cop killing maniac and his story. Every single one of them was left unfinished and kept jumping in between. I did however very much enjoy the performances of Paddy Considine and Aiden Gillen. They played very complex and interesting characters, and I believe Aiden Gillen truly deserves to be recognised after this movie, for, in my opinion, he was a better psycho than The Joker from Dark Knight.
Overall, the movie is worth seeing, but I wouldn't expect much of it (especially if you are a Statham buff, or a fan of witty plots)
Hanna (2011)
Not what I expected
Seeing how very much this movie is advertised, I was really surprised when I saw it. When I went to see this movie, I expected something of a mission impossible type of deal, you know, where the plot is very serious and every detail is taken care of (to appease a wider audience). And yet the movie turned out to be something completely different. It was more of a humorous, awkward, Die Hard kind of, only with a little girl (Saoirse Ronan) instead of Bruce. The plot was very illogical, full of dark humour, really weird settings and lots of loose ends (in my opinion).
Now, I can't say that I was disappointed, because, the music was really good and the acting was interesting, but I think there could be many improvements made to this movie.
Overall, it's a solid 7/7 and I would say it is very similar in style to In Bruges and Leon, so I you enjoyed those movies, you will definitely enjoy Hanna, but I don't think it's the right movie for the Pirates of the Caribbean fans.
Source Code (2011)
If you like loops - this is the movie for you.
The beginning of the movie was extremely promising. By the fifteenth minute, I really felt like I had no idea what the hell was going on, which was a nice way to relate to the main the main character (Jake Gyllenhaal). The information about what was going on was slowly revealed, adding a bit every loop, and created the same atmosphere as Memento.
The second half of the movie, get's a little bit boring, because everything is already revealed and gets more predictable with each minute. The ending is quite thought provoking and more or less original, so at the very least, it will at least make you wonder about the concept of reality for a brief moment.
Overall, I think this is a movie that would appeal to most viewers (especially Memento fans) and I definitely recommend watching it.
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (2008)
Well written, outstanding performance.
I must say I really enjoyed watching this movie. It is one of those rare films, where every single detail feels to have been thought through and there for a good reason. Throughout the whole movie I felt like I was reading a book, a great one, in fact, and so far the only other movie I've had that feeling about was "Everything is Illuminated". The plot itself is brilliant, interesting and original, the humour is very tasteful and not at all out of place. The actors really fit their roles, especially Amy Adams as Delysia, Frances McDormand as Miss Pettigrew and I also enjoyed the performance of Lee Pace, who played Delysias rich boyfriend. Another great aspect of the movie is the music. I'm not a fan of classical music, but it really set a nice and pleasant mood while watching the film, and contributed to the overall atmosphere very well. It actually made me look up the soundtrack afterwards.
Anyway, I wouldn't say it is a fun or hilarious or thought-provoking movie to watch, but it will remind you, what the art of cinema is all about.
It's Kind of a Funny Story (2010)
Something old, yet completely new.
I am a Zach Galifianakis fan, so when my friend told me about this movie I went to see it right away. It's nothing new. A messed up kid deals with all the usual stuff - love, school, friends, loneliness. But the way they combine humour and compassion is really great. The acting there is really good, the jokes aren't tasteless and the clichés don't feel out of place. Towards the end of the movie, though, it felt a little like they're trying people to prevent from suicides.
Overall, the movie was pretty good, and if I had to compare, I'd say it is a modern version of "One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest", with a little bit of "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Youth In Revolt" in it, which coincidentally are all movies I like very much.
If you like movies about eccentric people - this is the movie for you.
Devil (2010)
Very Average
Last Friday I really didn't have anything better to do than to watch movies all day long. The title, description and idea of the movie seemed like something worth watching, so I decided to give the movie a chance. I can not say that I was completely disappointed, but I wasn't pleased either. Nothing original, nothing special, nothing new. The plot was pretty standard for a horror movie, although I would say it's more of a thriller. There weren't any tense moments (except the last 3 minutes of the film, which was the only part of the movie I truly enjoyed). Anyway, this movie is exactly what you'd expect from something called "Devil". It isn't as good as saw, but then again it isn't meant to be.
The narrative made the movie feel very very childish. I would only suggest this movie to people who are very very bored or to 12 year old kids, because the movie wasn't in any way intimidating and there weren't any gruesome scenes.
