The Hangover (2009)
Most drunks are very easy to amuse. Hence this movie.
I actually thought that this movie was going to be really, really funny. I loved Todd Phillip's GG Allin documentary and his other feature comedies were great, but this was one tired cliché after another, just some ill conceived hour and a half long "drunk joke" that teetotalers think is funny because they're to spineless to have any real fun.
Perhaps by now, you may have realized that I'm an alcoholic. As I was watching this, I could not for the life of me believe that Phillips and everyone else involved were this incredibly unimaginative. Vegas? Marrying Hookers with golden hearts? Even the Vegas tourist board is more creative! The plain fact is, the movie was one of the most tired and flat films i've ever seen. Even my ex-wife knew that the "boys night out" stupidness in the movie was dumbly written and unimaginative. A big problem: there are literally thousands of other places to go that are more interesting than this.
But then again, I guess that Alkies are more comfortable at a safe, naive distance. We like our lushes to do the same thing they did in the Bugs Bunny cartoons 50 years ago. On the way out one 40 something woman remarked that the end credits made the characters even more moronic that she previously thought. Then the idiot took out a bottle of pharms and popped it. Must be nice to be able to do that without fear of social reprisal!
This movie was made for all the FBLA cretins that spent roughly a month drinking in college, and talk about it every chance they get for the rest of their lives. Steer clear if you have ever had an original thought, it would be a shame to waste the brain cells.
Knightriders (1981)
Only for Romero fans, and maybe not even then.
I'm going to give this a 5 because it's so freakin' twisted.(spoiler alerts ahead....)
I'm also going to be honest and admit that I've always thought Romero was incredibly overrated. His early zombie flicks are interesting to a point, but that's it. His later films, especially that godawful last one about the video cameras, are flat out terrible.
But this movie is just a big laughathon. I found this videotape in a $3 bin in some hole in the wall video store in Sacramento about 12 years ago.I still have it, and have even won a couple bets with it because no one can believe George made it. The acting is terrible, the subject matter is hilarious, and it looks like it was shot by my little brother.
If you like to watch incredibly ill advised movies, I say seek it out. It's a rockin good time. But in all sincerity, if you take it at face value, you need to to be evaluated. Put it this way: it's like "Fame," but with bikers with Camelot fixations. Too funny.(spoiler alert) It totally made sense to me when Billy committed suicide at the end.
I fully realize I sound like a snob, but frankly I could care less. This is the kind of crap that self important and delusional filmmakers like Romero make after taking their own press too seriously.
