Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)
Wanted to Love it...but only liked it
To start with let me just say that as a kid I thought Transformers were the best thing in the world. I used to watch the original series cartoons all the time on TV, VHS! and I thought the original movie was amazing, still do. The 3D in this movie is amazing. It seems to be getting better and better with each new movie being released. The soundtrack for Transformers DOTM is not as good as the first or second Transformers movies in my opinion. The title track by Linkin Park seems quite tame by comparison. Some things that annoyed me about this movie are as follows :- Optimus Prime, apart from when he gets real mad and easily kills a load of Decepticons is pretty pathetic in this movie. There are parts when he's grovelling at the feet of Sentinel Prime which were just plain stupid. This would never have happened in the original animated series. The film makers in their wisdom decided to rename Wheeljack to Que and he is easily the most annoying thing in the entire movie for me. Personally I was glad when he got offed! Along the same lines with Mirage who is now called Dino. I don't know what they were thinking when they changed these but as a huge fan of the originals I wasn't impressed at all. As for Rosie Huntington-Whiteley she was OK. Definitely no worse an actor than Megan Fox. Overall the movie didn't suck but I thought it could have been much better. I want them to make a fourth one and even a fifth one in the hope that they eventually get it right and do justice to my expectations.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Wookiee Hunt (2011)
Can't wait for season 4!
I wasn't previously a fan of Ahsoka but she really grew on me during this season. I actually started to worry that she was going to get killed during this episode cause those reptile baddies were pretty tough. It was great to see Chewy put in an appearance and his wookie buddies were pretty impressive also. I'm totally hooked on Star Wars: The Clone Wars and it's good that they don't tone down the violence and darker scenes too much. Long may it continue. I'm not too sure what else there is to cover storyline wise so I hope it doesn't get repetitive before the end. It's amazing how quickly Anakin seems to go from how he is in Star Wars: The Clone Wars to how he ends up as Darth Vader. I guess that's the power of the dark side!
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
Always makes me cry
I was 13 when this movie came out and as a 13 year old lad I loved this movie. I hadn't seen it in years and just watched it again. I have to say it just keeps getting better. The visual effects still look impressive all these years later and the soundtrack is amazing. The T-1000 is probably one of the best baddies in a movie ever. It is totally relentless in it's attempts to kill John Connor and it's up to the older model Terminator (Arnie) to protect John at all costs. There's nothing about the movie I don't like and that's all thanks to James Cameron. I think it's amazing that Arnie was able to go from uber-villain in the original Terminator to uber-hero in the sequel whilst playing exactly the same character basically. I realise that he's a robot but I don't think anyone else could've played that part and Arnie excels here. As a now 32 year old man I know I'm supposed to be all tough and hardened but the ending ALWAYS makes me cry and I'm not ashamed about it. Totally amazing.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010)
Still not a Twi-hard but really enjoyed it
Just got back from the cinema after seeing Eclipse. I must be in the minority of 32 year old males who actually liked this movie. I was a late comer to the whole Twilight saga. I only got into it when my girlfriend started reading the saga. I've liked the two previous movies too. As I said in the review of New Moon I'm really interested in the whole werewolf thing and there's plenty more werewolf action in this movie. My girlfriend told me that her favourite character in this book was Seth and he is pretty cool. For me, the best bits of the movie are the action sequences involving the werewolves. God I'd love to be a werewolf and this ticks my escapism box nicely. Oh and contrary to what I've read in some other reviews I think there was chemistry between the three main characters. One other character who comes across very well (in my opinion) was Jasper. Roll on Breaking Dawn part 1!
The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009)
Really enjoyed New Moon
First of all let me just say that I'm not tween girl who fancies Robert Pattinson or the guy who plays Jacob. I've not read any of the books but I have had the books summarised to me by my girlfriend who really likes the Twilight saga. I was looking forward to seeing the werewolves in this movie and they don't disappoint in the slightest. I love the whole pack mentality and for me Jacob is the star character in the movie. As for him getting his top off and showing off his body well it doesn't do anything for me personally but I can understand why it appeals to the ladies. And for all the haters (and there seem to be a lot of you) the werewolves seem to spend most of their time in the books wearing hardly anything at all so it's not just a ploy to get young girls into the cinema. If you've not been pre programmed to hate this movie before seeing it or any of the Twilight movies then don't be put off by it's extremely low rating. After all, who wouldn't want to turn into a huge werewolf at will...I know I would.
Avatar (2009)
An Amazing Experience
Just got back from seeing Avatar and I have to say I was very very impressed. Not only are the visuals unbelievably beautiful to behold but I loved the story too. This was the first movie I've ever seen in 3D. To me it actually felt like as I put on the 3D glasses just before the start of the movie I was physically and mentally transported to Pandora. I felt like I became one of the Na'vi and was completely and utterly submerged in their world. I would say that watching this movie was the best time I've ever had at the cinema. If James Cameron wanted to create a totally unique and unforgettable experience then he succeeded in my opinion. Thank you James Cameron.
Heat (1995)
Probably my all time favourite movie - Amazing!
I remember the first time I saw Heat. I was completely gripped from start to finish. The story, the characters, the performances and the score are absolutely amazing in my opinion.
For me Heat has some of the most emotionally powerful scenes ever. Some of my favourite scenes in the movie are the café scene - De Niro and Pacino, two living legends face to face. The scene with Neil and Eady when they're driving to the airport - you can see Neils thoughts eating him up - genius. And the scene where Neil walks away from Eady echoing what he said earlier in the movie about not having anything in your life that you can't walk away from at a seconds notice.
I'm not ashamed to admit that I've cried on numerous occasions during the finale and that's in no small part down to the incredible music by Moby.
Outstanding.
Back to You (2007)
I really liked this - please bring it back!
I must admit it took a few episodes to get used to Kelsey not being Dr. Crane but once I did I loved Back to You.
By the end of the series I loved the chemistry and family feel of the news crew and was genuinely sad when I found out it had been cancelled. Contrary to other comments I've seen about Back to You I think they could have explored other avenues with the storyline even after it was revealed that Chuck was Gracies father. I even managed to get over the producers changing the actress who played Gracie and also Montana leaving altogether.
I'm not sure if I'm right about this but I think that Back to You probably worked better for audiences outside of the US.
My favourite episode is Hostage Watch where all the actors shine.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
Not as bad as other people would have you believe
I went to the cinema to see this in the summer with high expectations. After growing up in the 80's I absolutely loved transformers. I'm also a huge fan of the animated movie and must admit that I've cried when Optimus dies in the animated movie! What you've got to remember is that this is basically a live action version of the animated original. Therefore is doesn't have to make any sense OR be believable in the real world. It's meant to be a fantasy world.
Also, please leave Michael Bay alone! I love both the Bad Boys movies and his style of direction doesn't bother me at all. In fact it brings much needed energy on screen.
I'd love to see more of the old characters introduced in the next movie like Hotrod, Cup, Ultra Magnus and Blaster.
Go into this movie in the right frame of mind and you'll have a blast. Go into the movie expecting realism and you're an idiot!
Fred Claus (2007)
Very Underrated
I can't understand why this film has such a poor rating. I saw this for the first time a few weeks ago and thought it was brilliant.
Visually stunning with some excellent performances and it most definitely has that certain warm and Christmassy feel to it.
Paul Giamatti as the big guy is an inspired piece of casting and the sibling rivalry between him and his brother Fred Claus (Vince Vaughn) is palpable. Throw in some other stellar performances from Kathy Bates, Trevor Peacock, Elizabeth Banks and the always believable Kevin Spacey and you've got yourself a Christmas classic.
Don't go into this movie expecting to not like it because of some of the negative reviews.
