Coach Carter (2005)

Super overrated
26 July 2023
This has got to be one of the most overrated movies of all time. Thankfully, the basketball scenes were fairly good and there were some wonderful performances. But I can't understand how people see Coach Carter as some sort of inspiration. His solution to everything is, "You owe me 500 push-ups and 200 suicides." I hope that nobody who watches this movie copies Coach Carter's tactics at all. You can't solve problems with push-ups and suicides.

There are many other issues with this movie. Overall, I would not recommend this movie unless it was to an absolute diehard basketball junkie who is a fan of corporal punishment.

What am I missing here?
24 April 2023
I saw this movie when I was very young (like 10) and did not remember much from it. I know it is a popular movie and see memes of it all over the place. So I figured I would give it an enthusiastic shot and watch it again as an adult (43 m).

What am I missing? Why do people like this movie? Someone please explain it to me. Yes, seeing Andre the Giant is fun. Sure, the "Inconceivable" guy has a few good scenes. But other than that...what is there to be enjoyed here?

Honestly, someone explain it to me. I asked my friends afterwards and they said, "It's funny!" Where?! Again, other than the characters I mentioned earlier, I do not see how any other characters are even attempting to be humorous.

Why do people like this movie so much? Why is it considered a classic?!

I don't get it
30 September 2018
This show has great reviews and incredible ratings, yet I don't know a single person who admits to watching it. Who are the people watching this show? Who actually thinks it's funny. I've seen 17,342 commercials this show and haven't even chuckled at a single one. Yes I'm a cynical grump.

You Will Get Hooked
9 May 2017
Hard to pick a favorite character in this incredibly funny, addictive TV show. Ricky, Julian and Bubbles are the main trio, of course, but the show would be severely lacking without Mr. Lahey, Randy, J-Roc, T, Lucy, Trinity, Cory and Trevor. Side characters such as Ray, Phil Collins, Don/Donna, Treena, Cyrus, Sam and George Green.

Notice I didn't mention Sarah. Somehow she's in 81 episodes without having one memorable scene, one funny line, or mattering in any single way. They could edit her out of the show and lose absolutely nothing.

Something is absolutely endearing about the entire show. You end up rooting for Ricky and Julian even though you can be positive nothing will work in the end. Part of you wants them to succeed, part of you is looking forward to them failing. Nobody watches the show because of the sentimental moments, but there actually are a few, and they work very well.

The problems with the recent seasons are that the writers got too far away from what made the show great. Nobody needs to see celebrity cameos, high production values, more complicated story lines, etc. Get back to the basics and this show will be outstanding again.

Entertaining if you don't think too much
27 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
If you want a funny and entertaining movies with some good characters and good moments, you could certainly do a lot worse. This is a classic rags-to-riches sports movie that follows a fairly common formula of an underdog rising up to take on a big challenge. However, unlike many other sports movies, we are not meant to like the main character from the beginning. Kevin James' character is shown right away as an example of everything that is wrong with being an uncaring educator. He then realizes the err of his ways and tries to find redemption, and that is when the story takes off.

The premise of him fighting to raise money for a noble cause is great. But you really need to suspend reality for the story to make any sense at all. First of all, schools do not accept donations for pay for a single teacher's salary. And if they did, that means Kevin James needs to keep donating his fighting profits for the rest of Henry Winkler's career to really make a difference. And it is not just Winkler's job that is about to be axed, it is the entire music program. So just raising money for one man's job will be a drop in the bucket.

Another ridiculous part of the movie is when Joe Rogan (playing himself) has the whole band flown out to play a one-minute song for the match. Hey Joe, this is a financially strapped school about to lose its music program. If you want to make a difference, don't fly out every member for a tiny performance. Donate that money to the school! Maybe I am a cynic, but that really bothered me.

While those parts of the movie were ridiculous, the overall experience really is quite good. Obviously your expectations coming into this movie would be to just enjoy yourself and have some laughs for 90 minutes. In that respect, this movie delivers.

Why was this movie even made?
4 April 2017
In general, if you are going to do a sequel to a comedy, do it in the first few years after the original. The recent trend of releasing a sequel decades after the original has produced nothing but awful results. While Anchorman 2 and Dumb and Dumber To are obvious examples. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is not only less funny than those two, it has less of a point too. Even people who were big fans of the original are probably wondering why this movie even exists.

The plot is pretty straightforward, which is fine for a comedy. Just make us laugh a lot, feel a little, and get attached to the characters, and plot does not matter all that much. We feel for the characters a little bit, especially Gus and Paris. As a matter of fact, Gus's character is a little too tragic for a comedy. There is nothing funny about the way he is treated or redeemed.

As far as funny moments go, there are very few in this movie. The writers go to the well four times for a joke that only worked once: the fact that there are no secrets in Greek families. The first time that there was a minor problem and the entire family showed up en mass, it was funny. The second, third and fourth times, it became obvious there just were no real other sources of comedy in this movie.

Like most comedy sequels, the movie uses much the same formula as the original. And like most comedy sequels, the same schlock is not nearly as funny the second time around. Jokes are not set up properly, characters are not put in the appropriate situations, and overall the film just falls flat.

See this is you wish, but lower your expectations. This is not a fun, family romp. It is almost embarrassingly bad at times, and only occasionally will make you chuckle.

Great Documentary, Some Negative Stereotypes
12 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
If you like sports documentaries, you are going to love this series. Most people are hesitant to go into a documentary not knowing the subjects, but the filmmakers do a great job introducing you to what you need to know right away. Overall, this a great documentary that is very well put together, but the subjects can certainly aggravate you.

East Mississippi Community College, which you have probably never heard of, is the focus of this documentary. The head coach obviously gets a lot of air time, as well as some of the star players (a few quarterbacks and some other intriguing characters, of course) and their academic adviser. There is no real "star" of the documentary, but the person most people rooting for is that academic adviser, Brittany Wagner. She is the only character who seems to fully understand her role at the college and give her best effort in a meaningful way.

The head coach, Buddy Stephens, is like a combination of every negative stereotype of head football coaches. He is loud, overweight, aggressive, mean, and unable or unwilling to understand that kids make mistakes on the football field. In one instance, he reams out a player for missing a block, reams him out some more, then comes back for a third reaming and pushes the kid. The kid says to the coach that he didn't need to push him, which makes Coach Stephens bench him for the rest of the game. Coach Stephens is your classic bully football coach who sees no problem is publicly humiliating his players for even the most minor of offenses.

Of course there are players on the team who are highlighted as well. All have a different story that lead them to a community college, and seem to really have the same goal in mind: getting out of there to someplace better. Skipping classes and not listening are recurring themes. Some players say they are all about the team, but do not sound genuine about it. Overall they want to win, of course, but seem more interested in where that winning will take them.

The cinematography is beautiful. The setup and layout are beautiful. These filmmakers really know what they are doing. If you love sports and are interested in how athletics have affect human emotions, this series is highly recommended.

Is the director a basketball fan?
29 January 2016
I'm really amazed at some of the choices made in this documentary. Despite it's lack of real flow or focus, I'm surprised how little research went into some of the establishing shots shown with the voice-overs. David Stern is talking about Ron Artest going into the stands, and they show pictures of Artest with the Lakers? That sort of thing happens constantly in this documentary.

Though I'm a big Steve Nash fan, I got so frustrated at the way this documentary was handled. There are some good clips and good moments, of course, but overall I was left feeling like so much more could have been done.
