The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (1962)
brings back childhood memories.
I wasn't alive when this movie came out, but I remember being a little girl in the 80s and they would play this movie all the time it seems on the TV. I loved the Dancing Princesses. It was one of my favorite parts of the whole movie. Even though the cinematography isn't the greatest compared to movies today, I don't care, this movie will always hold a special place in my heart. There is just something so magical about fairy tales and growing up. I work with kids now as an adult and I just hope that with all of the technology we have access to, that they haven't lost their imagination and creativity. They need to be reminded that they are kids and fairy tales are still magic.
The Secret Life of the American Teenager (2008)
Definitely not accurate....sexual activity is beginning much sooner than 15
I admit that I haven't watched this show from the beginning, and perhaps I am glad about that, from reading through the reviews posted I definitely agree a lot with others about the character development, or lack thereof, constant sex talk, and the over exaggeration of the "christian" teens.
While the show isn't very accurate, it does help in regards with maybe making parents a little more aware that teenagers are having sex. Unfortunately, this show is on the "family" channel and has to have its overdone cheesiness. I wish they would make it more realistic. I work with junior high school students and I can tell you that they might not talk about sex all the time, in fact they are a lot smarter with talking about sex than the teens on this show. The sad part is how many 7th and 8th graders, that I work with, who are sexually active. This TV series only concentrates on high school, but sad to say sexual activity is beginning in junior high and in some cases even before that.
I have had to help girls get enrolled in a "special" school for pregnant teens, and these girls aren't your regular old 16 years old, these girls are 13 or 14. Even growing up I had a friend who did get pregnant when she was 14 years old. She chose to keep the baby, but it wasn't all sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows like it is portrayed on Secret Life. Yeah Amy Jurgens may have problems dealing with her boys and her other relationships, but my friend, or I should probably say former friend, she didn't have any relationships. All of her friends tried to stick around, but we were in high school and wanted to have fun. While we were having fun, she was stuck working during the day and taking classes at night. She didn't have time to hang out with any of us. On top of working and still going to school, she was so incredibly tired, she would just sleep in between those times. She was lucky that her parents were willing to let her keep the baby. They did help out with the baby, but it wasn't easy, and unfortunately, as far as friends go, it's hard to relate to each other when you are going through different stages in life. She was forced to grow up when she still needed to be growing up.
Her story actually did turn out to be good later on, but this show just makes it look like, oh sure go out and have a baby, it's so easy to finish high school and work and you have all the energy in the world because your baby magically sleeps throughout the whole night. Oh and on top of that the father eventually comes around, but hey even if he didn't you have the perfect boyfriend who sticks by your side all the time, because he loves you ooooh so very much, oh and best of all he is loaded!!! So yeah it's great having a baby when you're 15!
Stardust (2007)
Enchanting
When I first went to the theater to see this, I honestly didn't know what to expect. I only went to see it because I am a Claire Danes fan, ever since My So-Called Life, I have had to watch all of her movies. Anyway I went in there with low expectations and came out pleasantly surprised. I loved this movie so much! When it came out on DVD I bought it right away and I have also purchased the book. Stardust is very clever, it is the right mix of comedy, romance, and fantasy.
Not only was I impressed by Claire Danes' performance, but Michelle Pfeiffer is an excellent witch and Robert De Niro is simply hilarious. I definitely recommend this movie, it is great!
Somewhere, Tomorrow (1983)
Wonderful must see movie!
One of my friends and I happened to rent this movie from a blockbuster in Utah a few years ago and it ended up being one of our favorite movies. This movie is a must see, we have never stopped having fun quoting it, however sadly enough later when we tried to rent the movie, it was no longer there and they never got any new copies. We have tried finding other places that have it, and we have even looked on amazon.com but it isn't there. Please bring back this movie it is the coolest and cheesiest!
Dark Shadows (1966)
Interesting Soap Opera
I just recently started watching this show and I have to agree that it is addictive, my mother used to talk about this show saying that she loved it when she was growing up, so when I saw it on Sci-Fi my reaction was "no way". Since then I have found it is quite interesting in a cheesy way but also an addicting way.
